Cross-posting from the Media Create thread:

As expected, Octopath Traveler has a position in the chart that is completely disproportionate to its retail sales. Looks like it should have a really big digital percentage. Did Japan also get the eShop digital sale on the game, or was that only available overseas?

For reference, here are the total retail sales for 2018 for the top 10 (numbers by Famitsu):

  1. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 2.360.655
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 926.553
  3. Overcooked 2 - UNKNOWN (released digitally way before retail)
  4. Splatoon 2 - 1.122.324
  5. Super Mario Party - 764.853
  6. Octopath Traveler - 193.780
  7. Kirby Star Allies - 664.815
  8. Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu - > 625k (more than half of 1.253.677 )
  9. Minecraft - 525.045 (released digitally way before retail)
  10. Mario Tennis Aces - 376.766

There aren't nearly as many Japan only games on that list as I would have expected.

Gotta love how big Overcooked has become in Japan in just 2 years.
Also Human Fall Flat constant 50% off and fun multiplayer gameplay helped it immensely.

I added in the publishers. There may be typos due to Google translate

That would also help in explaining the disproportionate digital share, then, along with the major stock issues it had at launch.

Credit to Eolz for finding:

They're tweeting their thanks for getting #6 on the top 30 on Japan eShop for 2018.
They say that regardless of domestic or overseas, the digital sales has increased considerably than before.

Too bad we don't have any numbers. I'd like to see if Bayonetta did well or not.

And congrats to Octopath Traveler!!

Wow, I wouldn't have expected to see Overcooked 2 that high. I guess that game was more popular than I realized! I also expected Pokemon to be much higher.

Good seeing Bayo and DK in these lists. Hopefully they sold a lot more than the Wii U counterparts.

I only bought Human Fall Flat because it was constantly at the top of the JPN charts. It is actually quite a fun game. There are a million of these wacky physic puzzlers, but I feel the slow pace and the multiplayer component makes it a chill game to relax and have a laugh with.

Ouch Mega Man 11. Maybe they should have made Mega Man X9 and not 11 by the looks of sales in general.

For fuck's sake Japan.

Thank god the rest of the world picked up the slack on it. I did my part.
The SKU treatment in Japan is to blame. Unlike the rest of the world, Bayo2 was just bayo 2 and bayo 1 was sold separately, not a bundle deal, and it was expensive. A two pack was only for the special edition SKUs. It was dumb.

Glad to see Valkyria Chronicles anywhere on these lists, but the lack of VC 4 is disappointing. Solid strategy game.

Surprised to see Wizard of Legend above Dead Cells, considering all the exposure for the latter, but perhaps it's been different in Japan. Or was WoL part of a Nintendo Humble Bundle?
