CSK&D is investigating a potential class action based upon reports that the Nintendo Joy-Con controller for their Nintendo Switch gaming console can experience joystick drift issues. Specifically, it is reported that the joystick on the Joy-Con will automatically register movement when the joystick is not being controlled and interfere with gameplay.

It looks like there's a class action investigation happening.

Surprised it took this long to be honest. I feel like we've been hearing vocal complaints about it for a while now and Nintendo has been dead silent.

Definitely keeps me from using my Switch as much as I wanted to when I bought it, I'll say that much.

Just wondering, how long does a class action investigation last, and how long should we expect to wait before the results are in?

Glad to see something happening. It's too widespread of an issue to see Nintendo continue to say and do nothing about it at all.

Nintendo's lack of response over this has been hugely disappointing. I really don't have faith in the Joycon controllers to buy an extra set due to this defect.

Hope something good eventually comes of a lawsuit.

This will either prove Nintendo is right for ignoring the xlmajntd or show there is an actionable design defect.

Either way it's good for consumers and maybe the discussion can be more.focused rather than weekly threads on Reddit about it and the same back and forth.

My personal feeling is this won't go to court

This is how I feel the Switch Lite might win out in the long run if it doesn't have this issue.

Good luck though. I had an issue with my left joycon back in late 2017, but it wasn't drift - the Switch just wasn't recognizing the attached joycon D:

I'm surprised it took this long to get something going. Nintendo has been selling these garbage controllers to consumers for far too long, full well knowing that they're absolute shit. I hope it's going to cost Nintendo a huge pile of money. My first joy-con drifted after only six months of light use.

This completely needed to fucking happen. The joy cons, as they are now, are simply faulty products. Nintendo obviously knows about this issue too.

Anything that will force nintendo's hand to fix the issue (if it isn't fixed by the time the Switch revision or new joycon colors come out), is good. I filled out the form with the info about my faulty joycon. I figure it can't hurt.

This is what happens when you go from a game developer/gamers first president to an accountant/spreadsheets and numbers first president.

Never had joycon drift issues and I think this class action investigation is kinda lame.

How come Sony was never taken to the woodshed for malfunctioning DS3's?

If Nintendo know what is good for them, they should do like Microsoft did with the RROD and offer free JoyCon fixing/replacement for everyone.

But more importantly: They should redesign the JoyCons so they don't suffer from that problem to begin with, so that issued replacements will be safe from it.

Wait, what? Iwata was in charge when they designed the Switch.

Nintendo's total silence on the issue also speaks volumes about exactly what kind of company they are. They could just have owned up to it and at least fixed the fucking hardware instead of continuing to sell tons of faulty units, full well knowing the units are expensive garbage that will break. I wonder how many extra joy-cons they've sold on account of the units breaking.

The drifting is apparently caused by a flaw in the way the joy-con registers movement, it has nothing to do with noisy communication with the console so Lite models will have this issue as well if Nintendo hasn't done anything about it for the Lite.

You're saying that the current Nintendo president is a numbers first president? rofl

On topic: Yes, the joycons are indeed hot trash, something has to be done about it.

The 3DS' screen scratching and the Wii U's atrocious d-pad and huge stick deadzone all happened under the "gamers first" president.

It's worth noting that a class-action lawsuit was what forced Apple to finally admit there was an issue with the butterfly keyboards and start a replacement program.

I think you've got it backwards. They most likely haven't spoken about the issue publicly because they don't have a supplier for a replacement part that doesn't have this issue. I'm sure they're aware of it and trying to solve it.

Same should happen for Xbox one controllers. I bought a limited edition one on release and it developed stick drift within 2 weeks of use (would always look up). I did lose or binned the receipt so couldn't return it (my bad ofc), but the build quality is so bad.

I don't care what you were expecting. but I think the issue is overblown.

And yes, I saw zero outrage or calls for an investigation over malfunctioning DS3's.
As someone who has had both his joycons start drifting after less than half a year: No, it fucking isn't.

The reason you're seeing more outrage here is because this is a widespread issue caused by a clear design flaw in the controllers. Nintendo is selling 80 dollar controllers practically designed to break.

Interesting that this is what finally seems to be sticking with the Switch. From day one I feel like there's been a litany of issues with the system that nobody has ever really followed up on.
