What....

How is already near PS4 LTD in Japan? That's insane. They must really love their portable devices. My goodness.

PS4 never really hit it off big in the homeland, which considering how well it's done overall kind of speaks to how dominant the western games industry has become.

These are rookie numbers. They're going to pump them up when the cheaper revision drops later this year.

Not a surprise. Sony for all intents and purposes is an American company when it comes to PlayStation. There are barely any first party Sony games that cater to the JP market anymore and those that could've done so either were underwhelming (the last guardian) or were forgotten by Sony and left to die entirely (Gravity Rush 2).

I look forward to all the future Japanese Switch games. Hopefully they get released outside of Japan.

Yes. Being portable is definitely a plus but it's reductionist to say it's simply because of its form factor that its such a fast success. It's also short-changing Nintendo to simply say, "Oh well the PS4 performed poorly in Japan."
Nintendo deserves the credit for making Switch an appealing product, that's true. Having said that, PS4 doing comparatively poorly in Japan after 5 years on the market is also true.

Fantastic. Looking forward to all the Japanese games that will no doubt come on the back of this. I'd love to see more indie/A/AA games on the eShop coming from Japanese developers, seems to be dominated by the West right now.

Like I always say, just wait a few more weeks for that PS4 part of the headline. You messing up the ascii is funny though.

The Switch is awesome, I just bought a mobile device holder to hold the Switch so I can lie down on my back in the bed with the joy cons in my hand to play.

I can now play until I fall asleep...

Damn

I remember people saying this was impossible last year lmao
Most were predicting it to do better than it did this year in Japan after shortages for most of 2017. It did solid numbers, but nothing spectacular until the holiday season.

It did just pass the Wii in launch-aligned numbers and it should stay ahead. Japan was the Wii's weakest market, but still a cool fact.

The more impressive thing for me, was the number of Switch games in the top 50 this week:

Top 50

NSW - 31
PS4 - 10
3DS - 9
