I'm just finishing up Darkness in the Capital and this game just keeps delivering. Lightning God Yomi was no joke, and then the Hayabusa fight . . . yes! The amount of weapons, combos, and customization gives the game near endless replayability. It was my go-to game when the pandemic started, and here I am, nearly two years later, still enjoying it. Now that I have the Izuna drop to go along with Hayabusa, I can roleplay NG3 while I'm at it.

I'm starting to think it's my favorite PS4 game. I'm also starting to think Nioh 2 would have a spot on my Mount Rushmore of action games.

No idea what Team Ninja and Fumihiko Yasuda are up to right now, but I'm 100% there for whatever they put out next.

Yeah facts. One of the best action combats I have ever played.

Yeah, it's really good. I'm super impressed with well structured and designed the combat and RPG gameplay is. Team Ninja really outdid themselves on it.

I hope Stranger of Paradise can come close to matching it, but I have my doubts about it.

Yes I love Nioh 2 (PC) so much. Over 130hrs logged. Played through NG+ etc. Still feel like it has more fun to give but trying to get games knocked off my backlog (like Dark Souls 3).

You know- I avoided Nioh 1 because I thought RNG loot went against the formula. Granted, plus we see RNG loot so much in other games... But Nioh 2 actually has a mix of both. I think bosses tend to always drop the samething. You just happen to get RNG loot from other sources. Feels like perfect mix of both worlds

Coop was amazing. Bosses are well done. Combat was great.. One of my favorite systems. It's different from Sekiro but still feels awesome and unique.

So sad no Nioh 3 is on the horizon. Life is full of tragedy. Their new title looks way worse then Nioh 2

There's no really arguing against this, the combat system is superb. Both in terms of mechanics and also customization/build variety.

It still boggles my mind how good the characters look in this game.

Like, you could go out on a mission and move the camera up close to your characters face, and it'll look just like how it does in the character creator.

Game is mad fun too, I'm going through the Underworld right now.

It's still gonna probably Ninja Gaiden 2 for me, but Nioh is no slouch either. Definitely the best combat in an action RPG to date for me.

I think they are making that crappy looking edgy action game for Square. Which surprised me because that combat looked awful.
This is done by the Dissidia team, not the Nioh team. That's why it sucks, and why the combat itself wasn't even really good.

The Nioh team was working on the Nioh 2 DLCs + the remasters, they had barely wrapped up those things when the first FF Chaos demo was released which means the bulk of the game is done by the Dissidia people. Perhaps the Nioh devs have since jumped on the project to help out, but I'm not expecting this game to be anything but a dumpster fire and I don't just mean the stupid dialogue; the gameplay was shockingly poor.

What makes Nioh 2 better than Nioh 1? I wanted to love the original but just couldn't get into it.
It depends on what you didn't like about 1, but it's likely that Nioh 2 is not for you either. The improvements are largely QoL.

FACTS on FACTS. Best game Team Ninja has put out since Ninja Gaiden Black.

Lot of things. If you just don't like the base concept of Nioh then Nioh 2 won't sway you but Nioh 2 greatly polishes up the gameplay of Nioh. It adds several new systems and defensive moves that really expand how you can take the fight to enemies. It also has the best character creator I've personally seen. Also generally the boss encounters are all just better designed and more fun.

its a very good game. Much better than Nioh 1 imo.

The improvements are largely QoL.

+It has more lively characters and more focus on Yokai rather than name dropping every feudal lord that ever existed.
+Leven design and enemy variety, some of the weaker parts of 1, have been improved pretty drastically.
+The yokai transformations and abilities are cool

For me, as a huge Souls fan it felt like there was a shitload of extra management in the first; loot, skill trees, etc as opposed to the exploring fighting. Basically when Diablo/Destiny aspects start to sneak in, which I get why people love but wasn't to my taste.

This game seems to have a constant undercurrent of positivity that's running under the radar.

I got it on my wishlist.

where was this LttP when I was mulling over the Remaster Collection on sale for PS5 last week

Joking aside, I'm seeing this sentiment pop up more and more frequently as the game's been out a while. I bought Nioh 1 at release on PS4 Pro and only thought it was okay, but I was always drawn to Nioh 2's create-a-character and seemingly slightly more open-ended progression? I might have a poor read on that 2nd part.

That said, I never quite got fully into the groove of Nioh 1's combat. I didn't dislike it but it also never felt like I could fully wrap my brain around it.

So the Remastered Collection remains on my PS5 wishlist. Guess I will wait until the next sale and then finally go for it and play Nioh 2 finally.

Same here, that and the level design felt way more unpolished than Souls

I prefer Nioh 1 by just a smidge, but Nioh 2 is also amazing. Both are in my top 20 games of all time.

The only thing it lacks is world design, way too samey. I don't like the separate levels either.

Biggest improvement is that you auto collect your "souls" in the boss room. Let's you focus more on the actual design of the boss fight rather than worry about making sure you die in the right spots.

I'msorrywhat?

This is important. Why hasn't anyone told me this? It should be on the box. "Has Izuna drops." Like I would have bought the game years ago.

Ren Hayabusa is a boss in DLC 2 (Darkness at the Capital) and you get the Dragon Sword, Falcon Claws, and the Izuna drop as rewards for beating him. Can get his armor, too, though the OG Ninja Gaiden skin is already in the base game.

Agreed. So much so that going from both Niohs straight into Sekiro was one of the worst decisions I ever made. Of course I shouldn't have expected as much gameplay variety but the lack of any difficulty and the super basic gameplay after the sheer depth of Nioh felt so bad.

For the people mentioning FFO I don't think that's the same team.

Last thing we heard was that they were working on that Chinese setting game.

Also kind of surprised people are so down on FFO gameplay. I spent hours in both betas having a blast, excluding the shitty performance of course. I don't think it'll be as deep as Nioh but job switching and the amount of combo potential had me pretty interested.

This is also (as far as I can remember) one of the first action games I've seen where you can actually provide meaningful support to your party. Hell, you can even tank bosses and have some degree of aggro management.

Edit:

Ren also drops spells that you can use to restand some enemies (fireball and something else) , along with the claw secret technique for a triple dash (you'll know the claw dash slices if you played NG2) . Might be something else I'm missing.

You can straight up get the Hayabusa gear and the Ninja Gaiden Ninpo. If you're a Ninja Gaiden fan you need to get on this.

I... don't really agree with this honestly? Looking at the story missions only, I feel like the levels were more memorable in 1, or at the very least they're on par. I really liked the Fishing village, the rainy ruins + underground temple with the statues, the flooded city, the spider castle, the ninja mansion, etc. And the bathhouse level (which is re-used in 2) from side-missions is pretty good too.

Nioh 2 had some good levels too, with the most notable one being the Mausoleum of Evil. But I thought it had more bland levels too, like the mountain level with the lightning dude (forgot the name), Ruin Draws Near, Bird in a Cage, Frenzied Blaze.

So yeah I don't see how 2 improved level design overall. It's about the same at the most.

For me, as a huge Souls fan it felt like there was a shitload of extra management in the first; loot, skill trees, etc as opposed to the exploring fighting. Basically when Diablo/Destiny aspects start to sneak in, which I get why people love but wasn't to my taste.
Then avoid Nioh 2. It just adds even more systems lol

Izuna Drop is a skill... ahem, drop for when you fight the Hayabusa ninja master. He's a DLC character/boss, and you can get his loot and sometimes his skills from defeating him. But it's not a guaranteed drop. And it's in the DLC which means late-game content. If this is your sole reason for getting the game, I would say that's a mistake, lol.

But, if you like Ninja Gaiden combat in general and don't mind RPG mechanics you should enjoy the games, at least?

Yep, I love NIoh 2. I love the first game as well, but this one is the perfect sequel, an improvement in every single aspect.

I'm also starting to think Nioh 2 would have a spot on my Mount Rushmore of action games.
Hell, even the first game deserves to be there. The game itself has its warts but the combat system doesn't get much sharper than that.

I really wanted to love it (did for a bit), but ended up dropping it sometime after the cat lady boss...
Just too many fucking archers, and the levels themselves were kinda boring.

I really should get back to this great game when I find time. I played around 20 hours of the PC version before getting sidetracked by other games I wanted to play. I really liked what I played so far.

I finished the original Nioh, so it would be a mark of shame if I never get around to finishing this.

Couldn't agree more. It saved 2020 for me.
The level of complexity and just various methods of combat make it at least a top 10 action game for me

Edit: scratch that definitely top 5

Edit #2: also one the best character creators

Nioh 1's levels were really boring for me. In part because they didn't feel natural at all, and they lacked visual flare.
The bosses were also much more interesting.
The OST is many times more memorable imo.

Played both the first and second game again and dived into NG+ runs where gear sets and builds really start to matter
I regret anything bad I said about this game, I'll take it all back
it was the most fun I had last year

I only wish that they hadn't made certain skills random drops from bosses with incredibly low drop rates. Such as a frustrating design decision to make some of the best moves in the game a thing most players will never ever see.
