Norman Reedus said that he believes the game will be out early next year... Details on Sam as well. Possible spoilers: https://www.reddit.com/r/DeathStran...foglers_podcast_with_norman_reedus_interview/

Dan: ...Tell me about this video game.

Norman: Death Stranding?

D: Yeah.

N: Oh, it's nuts.

D: You showed me a trailer for it and it just blew my mind, man. So it's all motion capture, obviously.

N: It is, yeah.

D: Do you like doing that?

N: I've never done the kind that I'm doing on this, this is a whole 'nother level, and I've been in a lot of video games, but nothing like this. And Guillermo Del Toro, he just wrote me - he and Hideo and I were supposed to do a different game, and that game kinda fell apart, because Hideo and that company kinda fell apart. It was Kojima and Konami, they kinda broke up in Japan and Sony picked up Hideo and he started his own thing at Sony. So we started this other one, Guillermo is like, "You should do this," I was like "What is it?", he was like "You should do this." Then I met Hideo, he took me to the Video Game Music Awards, right. And he comes walking down the steps, and the steps are lighting up underneath him, y'know, he's like "I'm back!", and then 10,000 grown men, with tears in their eyes, are screaming like Elvis just walked in, and I'm like "Who the fuck is this guy?" He's like a genius, and then you talk to him and you're like "Oh, you are a genius." He would actually be great to direct with movies because you'll say "Y'know, maybe I should do it over here, like this?" and he'll go, "Hmm, why don't you add this on top of it?" So he doesn't go "No, no, no, I see it that way," whatever you bring to him, he just adds a couple more ingredients. He goes "Well, try that then," and you're like, it's even greater.

D: Wow, that's like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory, man.

N: Yeah, his explanations of stuff, the way his mind works, he's the real deal genius for sure.

D: So can you talk about the theme of the video game? Like what's the storyline, can you talk about any of that or what kinda character you play?

N: It's not the kinda game where you kill everybody in the room. It's a game of bringing people together. How you play it, is you're building bridges from here to there, and other people are doing the same, and you connect, and the character that I play is, he's got this phobia of being touched, and as you play the game the phobia leaves you. It's complicated but once you're in it, it doesn't seem as complicated. It's constantly surprising you with decisions left and right, and what comes at you, and it's a real brave game. It's visually stunning, and the story behind it, it's a whole 'nother level, y'know. It's not Pac-Man, it's not simple, but the philosophy behind it is one that everybody can get.

D: When is it available, it's still in development?

N: I think it's gonna be early this coming year, I have three more [mocap] sessions here in New York starting next week.

Sometimes I have the feeling that this will be a shadow drop releasing on the same day after a Sony presser.

(Probably not. My guess is 2020, but who knows)

Man, if Death Stranding gets an early 2019 release date at the VGA's tonight then it will automatically be the best VGA ever.

An AAA game where it isn't about shooting and killing is refreshing, can Kojima pull this? Though I remember him saying you can play it like an action game if you want.

Maybe his perception of time is all fucked up after spending too much time hanging out with Kojima, but no way DS is out in 2019.

Maybe he's relating it to television shows / movies he's worked on, as in release 6 months after the last of filming is done. But mo-cap still seems like filming core stuff to me, as opposed to filling in dialogue.

Whenever new info comes, the game gets more and more mysterious and ambitious.

I love it. :)

No way. So Death Stranding is coming before Days Gone and Dreams, which are also early 2019? Days Gone is April for the record so this would mean DS is a Q1 game and that can't be true. I'm still sticking with Winter 2019 and I think TloU will be Summer 2019. Ghost will be 2020.

He thinks the game releases shortly after mocap is done. He doesn't know how game development works.

That description he gave about discovering the whole situation is exactly what I would expect Norman to give, lmao. Wonder if he was freaked out or rubbing his hands thinking he just landed the jackpot.

So Sam is afraid of being touched/touching peoples?

Makes sense why 'hands' seem to be a huge motif.

I hardly can see this being a mid-to-late 2019 title, let alone early.

In any case, beyond having a proper engine from the get-go (even though it'd still take some time for the team to get used to and create their own things) and a really fast, it seems, development, I think this game is going to be "smaller" in scale than what some people might be expecting. Works for me.

You'd think if he says such a thing there should be some truth to it. It would be one insane announcement tonight but also one that would warrant Kojima's presence to be honest.

This is odd....Why would Norman spoil so much so close to release? Has to be a ruse!

If it is real and true then Sony and Hideo will surely be pissed.

Hahahaha totally. To be fair, he probably has a much more lucrative deal with KojiPro than most actors in games.

Nice info on the phobia thing. A lot to play with there.

I also like that action isn't the forefront of the game.

Guerilla has been assisting Kojima with the Decima engine so that's probably why everything is going at such a fast pace. MGSV's issue was creating the Fox Engine alongside which was exactly the same issue as FFXV and Luminous Engine. This time, Kojima already has a finished and powerful engine at his disposal to play with, alongside Guerilla helping with further optimizations.

I'm guessing by "early," he might mean first half of the year...

which would still be pretty insane lol.

I cannot think of a better description of Kojima.

I think Summer 2019, or perhaps that Sept Spider-Man spot, are in play. I think at least one of the remaining big 3 for Sony will come out in mid-late 2019.

If this was releasing in 4 months we would have much more info and a release date by now

Yep, I know about that! But still, this is a AAA new IP with insane production values by a very recent company. As in, damn, things went by fast.

So, it's a bit surprising to me that they'd get it done in about only three years, considering how long new IPs seem to take and this being open world (although tbf the open world is probably something more in the vein of SotC than, say, TW3 or RDR). Especially since Kojima has had to hire people to create a full new team (I know many of his former employees are there now, but it still would take some time) and was in a search for an engine for a good part of 2016, only to settle in, I think, Summer.

All in all, even by Kojipro's fast levels of development, this is impressive. It's clear that he's been thinking about this game (or many of its concepts and elements) for quite some time.

Norman doesn't seem very informed about how development works if he thinks it's coming early 2019 with 3 mocap sessions left. That'd be some crazy ass crunch time. And we're talking about a studio that makes longer than average cinematics.

"I'm still doing mo-cap, but it's totally coming out early next year!" Unless KojiPro does things different from other people, there's no way the game will be out anytime soon if mo-cap is still happening.
