Wtf, is this true or even possible? I thought DQIX did pretty good because it had Nintendo marketing behind it and that we would wouldn't be able to surpass that in any way.

Is this a legit source?

Do we need a thread for every detail out of the NPD report ? There's a ton of them and it'd be better to not split the discussion.

Still, very good but expected performance on the revenue side since it's a 60$ game and LE are counted.

Just a question, what was the $ price of DQ IX when it launched compared to XI? Half?

Mat's our guy and he's been pretty reliable so if he says so, he says so. Which is good.

It's a $60 game, IX was a DS game

This also came out concurrently on Steam

...also, people are kind of starved for high-budget traditional JRPGs.

2018, on top of being historical for Sony first parties with God of War and Spider-Man being on the moon, is also the year where two japanese juggernauts (Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest) finally came back on PlayStation and broke records. What more can you ask for ? The best VR game maybe ? Oh hey, we got that too !

Now they have no excuse to not release DQXII in the west at the same time as Japan.

But that is for the next 2-3 years from now.

A lot of the units also come from the PC release, you know.

Why 35? Shouldn't it be 40?
Because it launched at 35. A lot of DS games did that in the US back then.

I'm not sure how reliable SteamSpy is, but it has DQXI as 100-200k owners, so at least 100k copies on there. That's where I bought it.

It's not reliable at all but an additional 100k is probably the closest to real estimate we could make.
EDIT: oh wait no, because NPD is including Steam sales already. So more like 50k.

Amazing game, pacing is perfect. The only minor issue I had was the MCs hair design lol.

While it's not said in Matt's tweet, Dragon Quest XI is not only the best launch in revenue, it also sold more units that Dragon Quest 9 (see Jawbreaker tweet in the NPD thread).

Nice, it's a very lovely and charming game. I'm currently playing on my PS4 Pro and I've loved every second of the 35 hours I've played so far. There's always someting new and areas don't outstay their welcome as the adventure always moves along at a brisk pace. This game is everything I used to love about classic gaming - that is now ruined by massive bloat in most western games. DQ XI is also the first time I play a DQ game.

He said in revenue. He's referencing Matt's tweet.

So, Dragon Quest XI set the record for Dragon Quest releases and sold more than twice the amount of the previous series record holder (revenue). Not too shabby.

Do we have sponsored posts or something now? Or do you work at Sony?

Good XI result - great to see see.

IX was.much cheaper though so the dollar comparison doesn't work in it's favor. Also XI is pretty much the game designed with the western DQVIII fans in mind on two plattforms, I think from SE point it was expected to be the best selling.

after DQVIII and IX i never doubted mainline DQ's sales potential in the west (though it will never be anything phenomenal). but that's the thing, so few far and between (non remake) mainline games, drives the other narrative

DS / 3DS software retail price being low was one of the reasons SE wanted to go console / PC. Thank god Switch software price followed suit so they can release anything anywhere from now on.
I know low-res/poly games cost less to produce, but with the caliber of DQXI asset / engine cost becomes less and less significant compared to the overall budget, and this makes publishers even less incentive to make 3DS version. DQXI JP version would be the last AAA 3DS game from SE for sure.

I'm excited it's doing relatively well on Steam, I'm all for more PC JRPGs. The genre has really started to pick up in the last year or so on there.

Those enemy animations at 120+ FPS tho

Good result but I do think SQEX was expecting a little bit more by moving development to PS4 too.
That's why they added 3DS in Japan and PC for the west....while also have a Switch version incoming.

They realized early that PS4 alone wouldn't cut it for their XI sales expectations.

But in the west I agree...outselling previous games on DS and 3DS is probably what they expected at least.

Can't expect more if you don't market your game in the west and you release it in the same month of Spider-Man and other 2 SE games.
But what matters is what SE thinks. They don't consider VIII and IX doing 1M in the west as good. And the numbers we have will put XI in a similar range. It made more money because it costs 60$ (IX was 35$), but unit sales are close to the two previous entries (150K~ for XI in the US on 2 platforms vs 130K for IX on 1 platform).

Assuming DQXI had 30% of share on steam on NA out of the 100k estimate by steamspy, it means that out of the around 150k units sold there's around 50k on Steam and thus ~100k on PS4 at full price.

Meaning :

PS4 + Steam DQXI > DQIX > PS4 DQXI > Steam DQXI.

Relatively speaking it didn't do that good but still respectable sales.

It honestly doesn't paint that good a picture, at least for me, as this tells me it's only performed marginally better than DQ9.

GOW and Spider-Man have been great yeah. Good for Sony first-party. MHW has been successful too, but also has a huge ton of sales on PC and Xbox. Don't underestimate those 5M+ sales on Steam (according to Steamspy).

Dragon Quest XI revenue record is for the US, which is a small market for the brand. Come back when a new DQ game is breaking records in Japan - or in case of a western country, France.

VR is irrelevant. Entertainment VR is unsustainable. Good luck with that.

Do you have any source to back up that first statement ?

In general higher pricing tiers are good for developers but I really doubt that Hori made the plattform decision based potential retail prices.
