I think all we have ever gotten was feedback from the publishers, no hard numbers. I could have sworn Civ also came out with very positive things regarding sales.

EDIT: I do think it was confirmed at one point that Skyrim did get close to 1mil though?
Fair enough. I'm very cynical when it comes to 'we are happy with sales' type statements. No one is going to admit to weak sales because it's not good for attracting future prospective buyers.

Have we had numbers for any of those games you mention. Civ in particular seemed to come and go with little fanfare.
All we know is that 2K went on record on that they were very pleased with CiV sales on the platform.

It was on an investors calls, not a PR even, though.

Yes and no, there were more than enough "bad sales" statements during the Wii/Wii U era as justification for not bringing games to those systems.

seven years is way, way too long before a major generation refresh. new platforms should have been out in 2019.

it's not just for the hardware manufacturers, but for the publishers on them. it takes time to build up a new userbase and it's tough to stay on a dying system.

I mean, Beth is supporting the Switch with near day 1 ports, Blizzard put Overwatch on the Switch after Diablo 3 and Switch is getting Overwatch 2, Civ just got a major update patch and it hasn't been ported on another console at this point, Square is giving Nintendo original games along with ports (granted, still no Kingdom Hearts collection) with one being the definitive edition of their biggest franchise in Japan, and Witcher 3's sells increased by 33% after the Switch version came out.

I mean, it isn't like we need hard numbers to see that those developers that supported Switch are overall happy since they keep giving the Switch games. I mean, even Capcom with its crappy Switch support has MHGU sell over a million on the Switch alone along with Mega Man 11 doing extremely well.

The fact that they immediately ported the game to PS4/XB1 after the success of the Switch version adds concrete acts to their words

Sony refusing to drop the PS4 to a standard $199.99 I think is the biggest culprit. It shouldn't be more expensive than that this late in the console cycle.

Switch being down YoY raises an eye brow.

Third party content is seeing an uptick on the Switch I think, but lets be realistic too, Nintendo has been a non-entity for 3rd party content for so long now that even Nintendo fans know to buy a PS or XBox to get their 3rd party fix.

Nintendo now occupies kind of its own bubble in the game industry where they basically can sustain themselves on their own core IP and family friendly appeal. Which is pretty amazing that they can basically sustain a 80-100+ million selling platform on their own because Sony/MS would sink faster than a rock without 3rd parties.

I guess Sony just wants the profit margin rather than the install base. I don't know, I feel like the latter would be better; hook them into the ecosystem so they're more likely to stick with you when they eventually jump into next gen.

I miss the days of $99 consoles late in the generation. Wait it out, get a cheap console and the games were dirt cheap as well.

Yeah those days are long gone unfortunately, if not alone just because of inflation.

Remember when the Switch was clearly not going to be able to compete with the much cheaper PS4 and XBO?🤔

Also something something mobile killed portables something something...

Also can someone run the numbers and see if Switch is outdoing 3DS+Wii U+PSV combined? That would be an interesting comp.

Thanks. Vita is probably similar to Wii U, or even weaker, so Switch probably is keeping pace with the three combined.

Is there a reason Battlefront II charted? It would of kinda made sense in December but January seems random

NFS being on the top 10 despite Monday is looking mighty awkward.

Also what a shock, DBZ is 1

As stated already, new consoles incoming. And no price cut.

I would say absence of big software titles plays important part too. 2019 was much weaker than 2018 in terms of big third party releases (and also first party). Ubisoft basically had nothing for holiday season and there was also nothing to counter the impact of RDR2 when compared to 2018. Also at least for PS4 Spiderman was huge title for 2018 holidays that Death Stranding didn't match in any way. Then add the lack of Fornite boost (compared to 2018), natural decline and lack of price cuts and you get big drops for hw sales.

Here's how we know Take 2 was actually happy with Civ 6 sales on Switch:

- They told investors they were happy with its sales on Switch.
- They ported both expansions one year later (these weren't previously announced to be coming pre-launch, so there wasn't a commitment to bring them over). That's not something you do if you aren't happy with sales of a title.

I think this here is a good indication of whether or not a publisher was truly happy with their sales on the thing:

Have they released more since?

At which point in time was the PS4 much cheaper than the Switch?
