Overview

The goal of this thread is share the profile data extracted from www.gran-turismo.com to show how the users playing the game are divided across the globe.

Notes

  • All the data were extracted from the API URL https://www.gran-turismo.com/us/api/gt7sp/profile/ (yeap GTS is called GT7SP internally) where I made a basic POST call calling Job 1 that returns 4 data: psn_id, status, profile number and country.
  • I use the most basic call to get the data called Job 1. There are others Jobs that returns more data like hours player, cars owned, races won, etc... all activity data can be extracted.
  • There are others sites with similar data but they just extracted 10% of the base and extrapolated to get the full picture. My data will divert from them a lot because mine is exactly what you have on GTS site without any extrapolation or estimations.
  • Status are divided in two numbers: 1 - Profile that played GTS final game and 2 - Profile that played only the Beta. If a profile with status 2 (Beta only) play the game today then it changed to status 1. I will try to track these Beta only profiles to see if they changed to 1 regularly.
  • Some profiles numbers can't be extracted because the API returns error while the GTS site works fine, it is about 700 profiles that I will try to cover manually in the future.
  • The country is determined by the PSN location (I'm from Brasil but my PSN is US so I'm counted in US numbers).
  • Profiles are PSN users that played the game and not game sales. Used games and family sharing can increase that number even when you had only one copy sold.
  • All the data extracted can be checked in this csv file (comma separated values): https://1drv.ms/u/s!AsRlMSDzwvw8g3OPhbR6SzdjVjqq
  • I will try to update the file and thread at least once per week. That way you will know how many profiles where created in GTS since the last time.
The data
  • Latest profile number: 7294381
  • Total profiles: 6,293,525
  • Total GTS profiles: 5,656,841
  • Total Beta only profiles: 636,684 * Beta profiles turn in GTS profiles after play the final game

Final words

The extraction took a bit more days than I expected but I'm happy that I could finish it.
Any question or suggestion?

You can compare the data with know sales in some countries... I think the numbers are pretty close if you estimate digital and/or accounts the fact some users buys a game in a country but play it with a PSN ID from another country.

Pretty interesting data. I wonder what the actual sales are for the game? Curious to know if its doing better or worse than GT6 at this point in its life.

50K in Portugal is insane, thought the game wasn't so hot here since most people on my FL didn't played it.

Your comment made me realize that Brasil has a lot of players using US accounts (like me) so the 50k is only for PT PSN accounts or BR PSN account... I added a note to explain that but that.

Well the know sales shows it doing way better than GT6... GT6 was around 1.5 million units sold in 2013... GTS already had over 3 million profiles at end of 2017.

If I'm reading that right, we're looking at about three and a half million Accounts at status one. I figured that would be pretty close to the actual sales of the game given its basically online only.

So the factors to consider would be firstly how the legs of the game will be as it continues to sell or if they plan to remarket and updated version of the game in a year or two. And secondly, if the level of engagement with the game is going to be higher among these users compared to GT 5 and 6. So far, they aren't actually charging for any of the post-launch stuff. So that extra engagement is just that and nothing more.

So it might end up selling more than GT6? It might not? Is it filling a slightly different role in the overall lineup than GT6? Questions questions questions.

That's pretty interesting. So the sales are somewhere between GT6 and GT5? I'm pretty surprised by that given the online focus end initial lack of a traditional campaign (now included in an update).

I think engagement will probably be much higher for those who actually give the multiplayer some proper time. I got bored with GT6 relatively quickly, but I've been playing GTS non stop since launch. Online races are just addictive, highly polished and surprisingly civil due to the etiquette and ranking systems.

Good job Etho. Some interesting data in the OP.

Regardless if sales, I love the game even though I suck at online racing =P

Wait, how is the latest profile number a million more than the total profiles number? Did I miss something?

GTS will sell more than GT6... i'd put money on it.

GTS will likely be the only GT on PS4, and will likely get frequent updates, meaning long legs.

Great work, man. More data is always welcome.

Also, nice job distinguishing the "beta only" accounts. So, it looks like we've got about 3.4M GTS players that have gone online with the full version. I wonder what the correlation to sales is?

Wait, how is the latest profile number a million more than the total profiles number? Did I miss something?

The account numbers start at 1m.

Its hard to say exactly how this relates to sales. For instance, I'm pretty sure weeks ago the UK sales estimate was above what we see now as total number of beta and GTS players (assuming the code numbers are that).

Thanks for the effort, ethomaz. Will look forward to seeing the changes over time, including my own copy once it comes down from the leaning tower of backlog and out of the wrapper.

It is possible to play the game offline, right? So there are probably some people who have the game but haven't gone online with it.

The numbers seem pretty encouraging and shows the series still has a lot of life. If the next game is more feature-complete at launch hopefully it can get close to the 10 million level it used to be at.

Interesting.

Do you think GB is so high due to black friday sales or that US is lower than usual?

How much do other games sell in Portugal usually? How well did GT before?

GT was always big here GT 3 was the best selling game ever in Portugal back in 2008 (LT) , read that on Maxi Consolas or PSM back in the day, I thought it sold around 300K.

Since then many things have happened though, Call of Duty, GTA, Fifa etc so I doubt it still holds the record.

GT SPORT might go on to sell 100K in Portugal which in this day and age is insane for a racer.

Keep in mind that Portugal is very Playstation focused, Ps2 sold almost or over a million here on a ~10M population, 1 out of 10 people owned a Ps2, most houses had a Ps2.

First update...

New GTS Profiles created: 23,181
Beta converted to GTS Profiles: 4,821

Not bad I guess... 28,002 new profiles played the game in the last two days.

PS. The file is still being updated on One Drive.

New update.

New GTS Profiles created: 43,946
Beta converted to GTS Profiles: 0 (to be fair I did not checked the old Beta profiles today)

Great job. Really good numbers for GTS.

Does "ca" stands for Canada? ... because if so there's something weird about Brazil numbers. In this table ca has more users than br, but when I'm playing online the number of Brazil flags are always way bigger than Canada, like more than twice.

The machmaking is regional... you will always play with more Brazilians if you are in Brasil (even if your account is outside like mine).

And yes... it is Canada.

I'm a bit surprised with that avg. of 10k new profiles per day.

That is about 300k new profiles per month in January.
This is impressive in one way that i dont think there was any promotion on GTS during Jan but not so impressive that GTS should be moving more unit in the 3rd month of its release.

What's your SR? I noticed the higher my SR, the fewer Brazilians there are

It looks like at the current price GTS can have good steady sales. I'm pretty sure it's going to sell very well in the next holiday season as well.

Driving games in UK are very popular in particular.

Take GT5, it sold over 500k within a few weeks in the UK. Took Germany 7 months to reach that figure.
Even Germans buy games in the UK right now, but I don't know how big that really is.

Look at current prices:
GT:S on amazon.co.uk is £24.99 or 28.41€.
GT:S on amazon.de is 39.88€ or £35.07
