From Nvidia's blog:
To help get GeForce GPUs in the hands of gamers, we announced in February that all GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards shipped with a reduced Ethereum hash rate.

Today, we're taking additional measures by applying a reduced ETH hash rate to newly manufactured GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards. These cards will start shipping in late May.

Clear Communication to Gamers
Because these GPUs originally launched with a full hash rate, we want to ensure that customers know exactly what they're getting when they buy GeForce products. To help with this, our GeForce partners are labeling the GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti cards with a "Lite Hash Rate," or "LHR," identifier. The identifier will be in retail product listings and on the box.

This reduced hash rate only applies to newly manufactured cards with the LHR identifier and not to cards already purchased.
This would explain why supply for RTX cards dried up over the last couple of weeks.

With that said, a reminder on that this is purely a driver restriction that Nvidia may reverse (intentionally, or otherwise):
https://www.resetera.com/threads/th...tx-3060s-ethereum-mining-capabilities.394288/

(also, I'd anticipate AIBs will be slow to drop their RRPs back down to Nvidia's stated pricing)

This 3080 I lucked into in November is going to be worth 4x it's price what the fuck.

They need to deal with this AT LEAST before the next set of mainline cards drop because holy shit.

Work
If this is just a driver restriction, people are going to find a way around it and the problem isn't going to be solved one bit.

If it does turn out to be unhackable, that would be great news for gamers and even better news for people with current 3000 series cards that can now sell their cards for an even more ridiculous price.

So this is definitely not going to effect earlier cards? Casual mining has been great as in about 2 months, I have made enough for about half of what I paid for my 3070 at MSRP.

Won't this make existing cards more valuable and sought after?

If that's possible.
That's probably a side effect, yeah (assuming that Eth mining continues to hold up and Nvidia doesn't realise a driver that unlocks the hash rate). Of course, there's a work around (mine something else, exchange that something else for Eth/Bitcoin) but that might be a lot of work for a large operation that's already dedicated to Eth.

didnt this turn out to be passable by the driver as NVidia unlocked it in a driver update? Not sure how much that would change.

At some point I'm probably gonna bite and sell my 3080 if these prices keep going up.
Strongly debating after this news leads to another inevitable price hike, I can't say no to 3k+ when I can just drop some change on a 3060 or something and get in with the 4080.
I'm actually terrified I won't be able to get a 4080 though, that's my hesitation with this, I just see no end.

This isn't true. The products use a revised chip with a different part number. This system is likely a combination of driver, firmware and probably a modified micro controller in the GPU package itself.
That's what they claimed about the RTX 3060, but then proceeded to demonstrate that was a lie with the linked beta driver release.

This is awesome news, but I really hope it's not something that is just going to be hacked. I've been in dire need to upgrade my PC since last year but just haven't had the chance, and I won't pay the outrageous GPU prices right now.

eh, when the 4xxx series launches, id imagine Ethereum's way of working will have changed.

Again, inaccurate. A driver was accidentally left online that didn't enable the feature. This driver was usable on some 3060 models. The feature itself requires drivers, firmware and the hardware in concert.

Honestly? I'd guess we're are at or near the zenith of GPU prices, since right now both regular users and miners are competing for the same cards. If Nvidia's hash rate limiter holds and they sort out their supply issues then the regular users will chase the new cards, which will leave miners to compete for the old cards. Apparently, Eth transaction prices are going to be cut next month, which will hurt mining profitability directly, plus there's a non-zero chance that Elon Musk will carry on badmouthing Bitcoin, which caused a 20% drop in its value of the past week (and a 15% drop in Eth's value). So, yeah, this is probably the zenith for GPU prices.

I understand the frustration that everyone is having at the moment due to the shortages of gpus but this feels like the wrong way to approach things to me.

Something about the artificially limiting the capability of the hardware you own worries me, whats next, limiting certain scientific cuda functions until you pay an additional feature fee?

Not going to get my hopes up for a 3070ti at msrp. Even if they manage to stop miners, the card manufacturers are going to inflate prices to gouge customers.

Reading the post the way they mention it is like it's the same as the 3060 so if it is, it wont help.

nah, fuck crypto. if and when your scenario happens, then it will be absurd and a problem, in a way that affects the common user.

Nvidia already does that, unlocking extra features for their workstation GPUs.

I'd sell my 3080 FE if I could guarantee a replacement with LHR, but that seems unlikely

If it doesn't limit all crypto, it doesn't matter; they'll mine something else just like they're mining shit with hard drives and SSDs now.
