Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) dropped the N-word during a discussion around discrimination against Italian Americans while quoting a recent New York Times op-ed on a New York radio show Tuesday.

“The Times also said in an article the other day, apropos of nothing, they were talking about it,” Cuomo told WAMC host Alan Chartock in reference to the opinion piece by a Times editorial board member, “How Italians Became White.”

“Going back to the Italian Americans because now you have me. They used an expression that southern Italians were called quote-unquote, and pardon my language, but I’m just quoting The Times, n----r w--s. N-word wops as a derogatory comment," the governor added.

“I’m just quoting the times”
“Excuse my language”

Doesn’t that mean you probably shouldn’t say it?

Jesus Christ he approached his utterance of that word like he was sitting down to a 5-course meal.

You just....don’t have to say it man. Even when you’re quoting shit. Why does anyone think they need to say it.

Just say 'The N Word' for christ's sake.

Even if quoting someone else, don't dip to their level.

Hm. I'm a little torn here, since without using the word I'd have no idea what he was trying to refer to when speaking about the word that was used against Sicilians (N-word Wops is kinda confusing imo). On the other, you don't necessarily have to go into the article in the first place, Cuomo.

That was ill advised, even if he was just drawing a direct quote from an existing source. It's not like you're reading Huckleberry Finn out loud pal, you probably don't need to invoke the word to make your point.

Not the smartest thing to say, but it is a slur that was used against his ethnicity. Safest thing to do would have said "n-word wops" I suppose.

I would not get upset at a Muslim/arab person using "sand-n*****," for example, when describing slurs used against their people.

Are you serious

What else could “n-word” be in this scenario, even if one had zero knowledge of the historical treatment of Italians and Irish, as you seem to...

If you censor the first word but not the second when you repeat it, it kinda tells you which one’s worse dude

He was using a derogatory term about Italians that included the n-word. Which is in and of itself clearly an issue as being black itself was/is an insult. Irish and Italian immigrants we're once depicted as dark skinned as an attack which is several layers of fucked.

I'm not saying this is great, but he was clearly discussing discrimination and not being discriminatory.

That said: don't say the word ever.

Cuomo being garbage isnt new, but in this case i'd just tell him to stop being stupid and just say "the n word". You dont need to quote anything

I too would be confused if he had only said "N-word Wops" because the "n-word" could be any word that starts with the letter N.

Yeeaaahh...I don’t doubt that Italians may have been called that, but you don’t really have to say the whole word, man.

I’m of the mind that adults having a discussion on discrimination and slang can say the n-word, but that it should be used only in grave circumstances to highlight hate and ignorance. Quoting the Times or not, to compare the treatment of Italians to black slaves is moronic. The Cuomos are showing a real victimization streak.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Go off telling a mixed guy that he should be aware of what all slurs look like, especially when discussing a different ethnic group.

Let me make it clear, just to cater to the lowest common denominator here: I'm not excusing it. Just saying my initial reaction is torn because he's discussing discrimination. Just saying "N-word" is fine, and the best bet, but I wouldn't have known wtf he meant without looking it up.

It's basically this, but he still should've said n-word because the slur he is referencing is no longer common usage and Italians have been considered white in this country for decades. Arab people are not considered white (some may be white-passing) and the racism against them is current and prevalent, so even though I think the comparison you are drawing is valid it is also slightly flawed.

Not a fan of Cuomo, it's not a good look for him but it's also not the worst thing he's ever done.

John Mulaney said:
"Hey, you can't put the word midget on TV"

and I said "I sure would like to."

And he said "No, midget is as bad the N-word.

First off, no.

No it's not.

Do you know how I know its not, I said to him. Is because we're saying the word midget, and we are not even saying what the n-word is. If you're comparing the badness of two words and you won't even say one of them, that's the worse word.

i didn't realize that andrew and chris cuomo were brothers. still it was only a few months ago when his brother got into hot water for comparing fredo to the n word so i would have thought he would approach the subject a bit differently

He should have just used "N-word" but I understand he is relaying his experiences of being called that by other bigots. It isn't meant to be inflammatory but more of like "I had to experience being called this shit."

So let me get this straight: an Italian American isn't able to quote slurs that were hurled towards Italian Americans?

Just don't say the word. It's really not hard. Well apparently for some it is, for some reason. Everybody knows what "N Word" is. So just don't fucking say it if you're White regardless of citing shit.

This is a weird situation, because if he's actually mentioning a racial slur that was used against his people and calling it out AS the racial slur it is, that doesn't seem like the worst thing in the world. These words and slurs existed. It's not like he's trying to use it for fun.

Third-generation Italian American here, and I've certainly heard that one mentioned in passing by my grandparents and great-grandmother (old-school NY Italians) as a term that was directed at them in the Depression era. It's weird to think that Italians spent a good chunk of the 20th century not being considered ethnically white until civil rights happened and then suddenly racist white people were like "ITALIANS AND IRISH, C'MON IN!"

really should have just said n-word or bleep. Nothing good was going to come out of this.
