NYT describes a cofounder of a pro-Conf. Monument PAC as having "not a stitch of MAGA gear"

Taking from twitter feed of @southpaw , this is another example of the NYT's systemic issues w/ political reporting that have led to things like the Nazi profiles and using the same Trump-supporting small business owner for quotes in articles about small business owners supporting Trump 3 months apart. The responses in the final two tweets unfortunately explain how a piece like this gets this angle. All reporting is editorial to some degree out of necessity. But this is a deliberately disingenuous framing to disguise the nature of the person he's profiling. Unfortunately, they'll likely do nothing to address their internal problems with their political reporting, because they fired the person who was supposed to internally check them on this stuff.

Threaded tweets if you want an easier layout: https://twitter.com/user/status/1010584649343688704

And the final tweet in the thread from @southpaw, which I couldn't link directly.
Peters responds. Anders’ pro-confederate monuments PAC was very active last year, including in the wake of Trump’s Charlottesville comments, and afaik remains a going concern. Thx to @brianbeutler

Lol pretending to miss the point. You proffered her as just some regular voter. Which particular political group she was active with is irrelevant.

Also holy shit, I got this confused with another story because THIS ISN'T EVEN THE FIRST TIME NYT GOT CAUGHT PULLING THIS CRAP THIS WEEK:

To add onto this, there's a big issue with one of the stats the article in the OP quotes-

I think this article does a good job explaining for those who are confused by the subject.

Seems like everything he posts on Twitter has a tinge of supporting fascism. Hmmm.

Dedicating your life to glorifying a state that was created for and dedicated to white supremacy is a bigger moral failing than wearing MAGA gear.

I might write one of my fire-laden posts about this topic later, but for now I'll keep the explanation succinct:

Brother Kirblar has in the past correctly noted the overwhelming whiteness of the journalism industry. These white journalists likely have friends and relatives who voted for Trump - you know, law of averages and the fact he won a majority of white people. Loath to admit that their friends and family might just be bad people, they concoct other explanations: "Democrats just didn't speak to these people; Trump offered them an alternative"; "Democrats aren't doing enough to win them back"; "yes he puts kids in camps, but they like that he keeps his promises." In their work we see not objective reporting but their vain attempts to rationalize racist white Trump voters' moral failings - their friends' and families' moral failings. These people about whom they write - the neo-Nazi and now Ms. Confederate Monument, e.g. - function as proxies for people they know. In other words, "If I can show that the Nazi's not totally evil, maybe my dad's not totally evil" or "If I can prove that it's Democrats' fault, then I can't blame my mom for voting for a man who sexually assaults women." You see the same song and dance in this very forum.

Their lack of self-reflection astounds me.

Of course, I should also note that some of them might be white supremacists or sympathizers themselves.

There was a post about twitter and RTs and such w/ political journalists that noted that specific subset is overwhelmingly (3/4ish) male as well.

Not a good look for Peters or the Times, especially that Twitter response. Yikes.

Their lack of self-reflection astounds me.

Peters' tweets are either evidence for the above or for a complete lack of reading comprehension. Either of which should be enough to make any newspaper think twice.

Edit: I mean, come on. From further down:

"The fact that she is a committed right-wing activist seems relevant to assessing her claims of conflictedness or persuadability. Would you quote a local GOP county chair for a story like this without disclosing?"

You obviously don’t understand Republicans very well. “Right-wing” is lazy shorthand and totally misses how different Ron Paul and Donald Trump are.

To cover politics, you don't actually have to understand it or actually approach it in good faith!
