As a non-American looking at this from the outside, it seems like a lot of white liberals are very threatened by her and other brown women winning elections? That's the impression I'm getting from social media at least.
There is always an undercurrent in the US in general of the progress & success of people of color in being looked on with disdain. We're "allowed" our equality but for too many people, once we start rising to power, making more money or making policy, it starts to feel more like we're gaining supremacy which is a big no no. That kind of attitude is nonsense of course but it is the underlying background noise of white moderates througout history: progress...but not too much

Hasn't she been on the colbert show like 4 times in the last month.
And? Is that suddenly a sin?

01) She fucked up, but because she's a political newbie, owned up to it, or at least said that this won't happen again, I'm giving her pass.

02) The amount of attention she's receiving is really fucking weird. I can't help but feel like she or what she represents has got some people in power shook.

GAF wasn't polarized. It was #ImWithHer mixed with a few daring Bernie posters here and there. This polarization is.... kinda nice? Lol

I don't know, there seems to be less willingness to meet each other halfway. I think AOC is a fine politician who cares about real change for her constituents but she made a mistake here. Even mentioning that seems to rile some people.

The amount of attention is disproportionate, especially given everything else out there that needs attention. AOC has become a target of "What did the millenial commie do today?" style reporting. The reasons for this are pretty obvious.

People should wise up.

When someone as young as her became an overnight success, I thought "Wow. She is amazing." She is my age, smart, sexy. There was no reason me and her couldn't hit it off and be friends! I read about her daily, watched footage of her nightly—I could tell she really was speaking to me. Then this happens. All of a sudden she is making time for "at-risk" people, people who fear for their well-being and livelihoods every day who just want their voice to be heard by someone who they feel is actually listening. I don't fucking think so. I listened to HER every day! And every night before falling asleep—when I would moan and scream her name into my pillow, calling out for her touch—I prayed she was listening to me. But now I know it was a lie. She betrayed me. Betrayed me by not allowing the press to take pictures and interview these "at-risk" people who she wants to reach out to—people that aren't me. I deserved better! She has broke this country in two, along with my heart. We are all doomed if she is our future. And I better not find out she has a boyfriend, or we're done.

She has to learn to do what Republicans do regarding town halls. Hold them in strongholds during hours when working people cannot attend or hold telephone town halls or don't hold them at all. That's how you answer your constituency.

Because in reality theres like 3 political parties within the republican and democratic party
Wha? No, there's a Republican-lite part of the Democrats, those left of them, versus a perfectly unified Republican Party with "morals" and "values
I don't know what that means. I'm not American. I like everything I've read and heard from AOC. Her politics are the same as the groups I'm involved in in my own country. I just think she made a naive political mistake here. I fully agree with what her intentions were.
Basically the centrist wing of the Democrats. Pro capitalism, big money shills who know damn good and well that democratic social policy is the answer, but stand against it because they realize it'll come out of their pokcket books

Sorry I thought this was a thread where people present some of the worst takes imaginable.
LMAO You'd be right

So she made a rookie politician mistake, but the reasoning for her mistake was incredibly sound: she wanted to provide the same type of safe space that wealthy donors typically get to the underprivileged. These are people that actually NEED that privacy and access to politicians, instead of the wealthy assholes who usually get those during fundraisers.

The media treatment of her continue to be wild. Seeing some reporter smear her by attributing Trump's anti-media rhetoric and other media entities constantly attributing every political misstep of other politicians on her shoulders is just WTF inducing.

The critical assumption here being that the reasoning given for the mistake is honest and not a form of damage control after the fact.

I like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and while having an event closed to press may appear suspect I completely understand why she would do it considering this particular audience

Don't see what people are upset about. Virtually every politician does this, just not usually with vulnerable people.

The microscope is the press and the press reports to us, the people. All we have to do is say "this isn't a big deal, stop with this" instead of feeding into a narrative that is counterproductive. We have the power to bump it out of the news cycle entirely if we don't buy into it.

The people extends well beyond this board, however. And reporting when things like this happens would meet the standard of serving the public interest, particularly when it comes to a metro weekly like the Queens Chronicle which serves her potential constituents. Arguably too, people wouldn't have known that this was what her "Listening Tour" was really about unless the press called her out for not being forthcoming about what these events were and what was transpiring. Only thing known about it was that it was just a Town Hall, which typically, isn't considered a private event nor has press barred from it.

The narrative may be counterproductive to her agenda, but then again this was also a narrative spun through her own actions. Luckily the narrative also exists that she's generally been open with the press and that she's previously handled "scandal" with her campaign well, so it's not likely to have her take on water, let alone sink her. But it's something to watch for, in my mind. Even when I see a young baseball player make a "rookie mistake" I like to keep on eye on them to see if they improve that particular facet of their game.

its not even that, its if you dont support these far left candidates you are the enemy. I mean I'm team GAVIN NEWSOM and the mayor of LA
You don't have to support her. I for sure don't support her cause she hasn't done anything yet, there's nothing to support. However, it seems that her sole public presence is intolerable for the self proclaimed progressives in here, which is illuminating. Almost like their actions and what they espoused to be a in contradiction.

I guess they aren't #withher

Yes but, you see, this Puerto Rican woman made a mistake and we can't have that! She has to pay for her sin dearly! Her apologies and vows o never repeat it mean nothing!

Now if you'll excuse me we have to go back to making sure that an old white rich man who lies multiple times a day gets reelected President.

The people the event was for makes that a natural assumption.
The event wasn't specifically for any group or groups. That is an invention of the moderator who changed the thread title.

What happened: AOC's outsized national profile means her events are probably mobbed by press. This is intimidating to normal people, particularly those dealing with sensitive issues. She wants to hold an event where the residents (all residents, not targeted groups) can feel comfortable voicing their concerns, so the press is barred from a couple town halls.

What this thread thinks happened: AOC held a special outreach event for vulnerable groups and CNN is bitching because they couldn't interview undocumented immigrants?

edit: here's a wapo article with some quotes:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...crutiny/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.204d9f9b53f1

Ocasio-Cortez's communications director, Corbin Trent, told me on Friday that the campaign had decided to try a handful of private events in order to make constituents feel more comfortable about speaking out. Since winning the Democratic nomination in New York's 14th Congressional District, Ocasio-Cortez has received a crush of media coverage.

"We decided to do community events that would attempt to create a sort of different environment — an environment that was a little more intimate by excluding cameras and press," Trent told me, adding that the idea was to "create an open space for community members and community leaders to speak openly." Trent noted that "when people know that they're being recorded and scrutinized, they change the way they interact."
But Trent confirmed that it would not be happening again. "It's not been a policy of the campaign," Trent said. "It won't be the policy of the campaign." Asked whether there would be any such media exclusions going forward, Trent said: "No."

Trent defended the decision, pointing out that, even in those two cases, "we were still committed to transparency by live-streaming the events."

I mean neither scenario sounds like a big deal to me, especially considering her recently acquired exposure and the expected learning curve that comes with it.

It's not a big deal! That's why it's so aggravating that half this thread is defending her based on a made-up version of events. You don't have to invent a false narrative to be OK with what she did.

This is not an accurate characterization at all. The animosity between Bernie and Hillary supporters even spilled onto this site. It was the exact opposite of what your saying.

It IS an accurate statement and the fact that you stated that it spilled over to here makes me correct. But you're obfuscating my point. The difference between sites is that the discourse here is much more allowed and open. It wasn't on GAF. Even some of the moderation jumped in, even banning folks who weren't in line with it
