I am insanely hyped for this game. FF6 and CT are two of my favorite games.

The real news here is that it was apparently not obvious to some people what Bravely Default's inspiration was.
Isn't this along the same lines that were touting I am setsuna as a spiritual successor to chrono trigger?
Ie PR speak. Don't fall for it
There's a difference between I am Setsuna devs and Octopath Traveler devs.
Oookay. I forgot we were dealing with an expert on Japanese PR hereIn regards to how the PR branch of Square Enix coaches those going into interviews? I doubt it

I'm not gonna break embargo, but just from the demo you can tell that this is more of a SaGa game than a FFVI or a CT. It's about eight different stories, not one.Jason, can you give us a subtle hint as to whether it is up there with FFVI or CT?
I doubt he's even allowed to do thatJason, can you give us a subtle hint as to whether it is up there with FFVI or CT?
Oooooh snap! But true. I used to love Kefka, but each replay has had him cool for me.
Heh, finding out about a game in a magazine. You old peeps did wild things alright ;)The visual style is great, I get the same feeling I had back then when I'd see screenshots of a new JRPG that was in development in some magazine.
Are you allowed to say if the stories join as a big one?I'm not gonna break embargo, but just from the demo you can tell that this is more of a SaGa game than a FFVI or a CT. It's about eight different stories, not one.

This is such a cynical way to see these kinds of statements. If you decide that everything developers say is decided and handed down by a committee and there's 0 genuine authorial intent or expression in the video game industry... then that's a pretty bleak outlook. I see this as a developer happily sharing his inspiration and the effort he went through to get a game he wanted to see exist made, which is not all that uncommon really. Calling renowned games from the SNES era as inspiration for new ones isn't something exclusive to SE at all. Developers share their inspirations all the time. This is PR when all is said and done. The devs will say anything to sell their game.
Don't forget it.
If there is a single story he may not have reached it yet since he's just 20 hrs in
I love this response, haha. Reminds me of how my friend and I are always needlessly butting heads over FFVI vs FFVII, even though I haven't ever played FFVII and he hasn't ever played FFVI.

That's a really long time to spend on getting the characters alone, didn't some people speedrun the 3 hour demo and got all of them?If there is a single story he may not have reached it yet since he's just 20 hrs in
If each characeters story is 3 hrs for example then single story wouldn't start until 24 hrs possibly
Yea but maybe you have to finish the story of each character before the single story starts, not just get the charactersThat's a really long time to spend on getting the characters alone, didn't some people speedrun the 3 hour demo and got all of them?
This probably wouldn't be that difficult, as the only intro you actually have to play through is your first character. There's an option to skip the intros of everyone else you add to your party. That's a really long time to spend on getting the characters alone, didn't some people speedrun the 3 hour demo and got all of them?
I haven't played the demo but from what I hear, I sure hope they changed it for the full game. It was disappointing to hear that it didn't matter who's story you chose, you would just run into the other characters and they would agree to join with no reason or context.
They said they had to do the starting chapters that way because of how open ended the beginning wasI haven't played the demo but from what I hear, I sure hope they changed it for the full game. Up until this post I was hoping it was just 15 hours for the 8 individual character intros, then 25-30 hours of grand linear story after. Yeah, they shouldn't be calling it a spiritual successor to VI.I'm not gonna break embargo, but just from the demo you can tell that this is more of a SaGa game than a FFVI or a CT. I am setsuna was maid as the spiritual successor to Chrono Trigger....so I won't hold my breath until impressions are out.
Mods, please make sure this happens
More like a successor to Final Fantasy: The 4 heroes of Light.
Edit: Mechanically, yes, FF5.
This is great to know! I did play the 3DS demo quite a bit, but for whatever reason, I skipped the full version (there was a LOT of complaining about a certain chapter IIRC?). I'm pretty excited for Octopath, so maybe it's time to go back and play the 3DS Bravely games. I'm assuming Bravely Second is good too?I believe he's talking about the job system. FFV is my favorite FF and I loved BD.

We already knew every character has their own set of chapters. How many and what happens after that, we dont knowUp until this post I was hoping it was just 15 hours for the 8 individual character intros, then 25-30 hours of grand linear story after. omfg!!!
Lol.
The job system is pretty close to FFV.Not to kick this off with a slightly OT comment, but Bravely Default was developed as the spiritual successor to FF5? I had no idea. I love FF5.
Are we so cynical as to reduce this developer talking about how his childhood influences informed his professional desire to create spiritual successors to PR speak?
.
The complaints about Bravely Default are due to a timeloop you get stuck in at the end of the game. Literally the end, as it's about the last ~5 hours or so of a 60 hour game. Many people felt significant pacing issues during this sequence. But you can actually just power through most of it in like an hour or two. It has story reasons for existing, but outside of that, it's more or less just an optional boss-rush mode that fleshes out the antagonists of the game, gives you insight to their backstories and motivations, etc. You don't even need to do any of that to get the true ending. Personally, I liked it. Some of those boss fights were quite challenging and encouraged you to play around with and break the job system. It's how I learned that the Spiritmaster job was OP as fuck. This is great to know! this would be funny but I feel like it'd gather lots of salt and drive by shit posts
