Tweet got deleted, but I'm listening to Zuckerberg.

Reversal of policies - looking to detach Facebook completely from Oculus and allowing side-stores, sideloading, and other stuff.

OP is from a Stephen Totilo tweet

Zuck wasn't clear but it appears you'll be able to use other logins on Oculus products other than FB starting next year

Nice, I don't use FB at all. I only use WhatsApp in the FB ecosystem, and not often. So it's cool they are removing the restriction.

Sounded to me that they were only droping it for business stuff. E.g. you can use your company email to log in.

the language used in the tweet ("reducing" the requirement instead of removing it) seems weird but hopefully its true and its completely severed.

Hopefully this changes peoples' minds on refusing to get into Quest. Though, I totally understand if people still have reservations about data collection.

Facebook I'm still not giving you my money. This company is going to get broken up or investigated into oblivion hopefully in the next decade, imo I would be worried about investing in the platform if I was a fan of Oculus. I do not want to line the pockets, even indirectly, of people who are helping right wing extremists in the the US.

Quest is not going away. Microsoft was investigated into oblivion as well.... guess what happened to them?

This was basically the only reason holding me back. I might bite on a Quest 2 eventually.

This is utterly shocking, if true. The amount of ad money Facebook has been dumping into Oculus, and now to decouple the login from it?

Probably still not getting one. It is one of the better affordable ones, but the company is so problematic (as is the founder of Oculus).. there's no way I can feel happy about buying one (I wish steam would build a similar priced/competitive product).

They're rumored to have one, code name is Deckard.

I mean to my knowledge they didn't help Trump promote his hate speech and help foster the stop the steal movement (tho I am sure Microsoft has done a lot of awful things, after all all of our beloved consoles might be made using slave labor)

you're probably right and the government will do nothing like they've always done with companies like Facebook. I do not mean to derail and I can delete comments but I just cannot separate oculus from Facebook and the harm it is doing to the world.

Until they clarify, a massive warning: FB For Workplaces is a FB-controlled login system. Requires personally identifying confirmation before FB greenlights each account. If that's what this is, it's nowhere near the same as a wholly decoupled and anonymized login system.

literally any other kind of account and I'd have bought a Quest by now.

I've never used my real name on Facebook, and the risk of one day being banned for that with my game purchases tied to it... NOPE

You know how when you go to a site that you don't have an account on, and you can click "Create Account With Google" and it sets you up real quick-like? Probably something like that. If it's work-related, expect M365 integration and stuff.

Yeah the language is still a little cagey for me to get too excited. Really been wanting to check out a Quest but the FB integration really puts me off. If this is actually true, and hits before PSVR2, I might bite, but I'm not giving FB any sort of benefit of the doubt. They exist for your personal information.

You're already able to use FB For Workplaces via Oculus for business though, so that's an odd "new" announcement if that's what it means.

Still, don't get excited about sideloading etc especially - you can already do that, and he just said it would continue. So Sidequest will still exist, but I don't expect them to do anything more dramatic than the status quo there.

I'm guessing not much value in tying what VR porn you watch to a facebook account

The tweet does not say you don't need a Facebook account, just not a "personal" Facebook account. The thread title is pretty misleading.

So I'm very interested but it's still supporting Facebook as a company so I still cant see getting one.

This is music to my ears. I just hope I'm able to transfer my purchases from my Facebook account to the new non-Facebook account.

If not, I don't have many and I'll switch anyways. I rather not have my Facebook account tied to it.
