That sounds extremely illegal.
It's not. Senators can basically do whatever they want in an impeachment trial.

All that said, since it's obvious that the GOP is not going to remove Trump, it's for the best if McConnell are co. are as blatant as possible in making their acquittal lacking in legitimacy. If they had gone all-in making it seem like they were genuinely weighing the evidence, that would be worse as far as using the impeachment to harm the GOP's electoral prospects.

Kentucky is voting for Moscow Mitch again unless the country is in an economic depression that makes the Great Depression look good.

Senate rules during impeachment trial specifically require an oath to be impartial. In what world is "I'm going to coordinate with the defense, as a juror" not partiality?

prosecution is handled by the house and the defense is up to the accused

Looks like the GOP has adopted the Trump strategy of just announcing your crime outright before you do it. Sadly, there's less blowback this way without the scandal of Mitch inevitably being caught coordinating with Trump on his own impeachment.

For something to be illegal it has to be forbidden by a law.

This is all that defines the Senate trial.

"The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two-thirds of the Members present.Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States; but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law."

This is a political process and playing politics isn't illegal.

At this stage, I think it's safe to say that the American democratic system does not work as intended. Revolution, riots would need to happen to make things change.

In theory it means they can be charged for perjury if they knowingly lie during the trial, in practice it means someone will say they are deeply concerned that such and such senator lied and never address it again.

Collusion and lobby is what decide this.

Yesterday in chile there was an impeachment attempt on the President due to human rights violations, his defense accepted that he has omissions but that omissions aren't ilegal. Government was surprised lobbying in the bathroom with some congress members, and 8 opposition members vote against impeachment, saving the President. Every oficialist member voted accordingly.

And I guess the same could happen in your congress. Who knows what dirt could they have, or campaing money being promised/threaten. Ethics and Politics aren't friends
