One of my YouTube videos gradually hit a 1,000 views over the course of 8 months.

No kidding. I tried. But I had to remove the song because of copyright.
I've gotten a TON of views on random videos of my very young kids and their friends goofing around that I just upload for family and friends. Playing in the pool, splashing around in the lake, running under the sprinkler, playing on the slip & slide, having water gun fights, etc.
I have no idea why they're so popular but apparently people just love them so whatever.

Don't upload videos of your kids onto the internet for thousands of creepers online to see.
Nice Goku, a fraction in and I dig it so far. Pretty much on par with the standard production quality of a lot of the successful deep dive video essayists/speculators circling 'round with a mostly relevant B-roll and a cleean mic. It really helps your enunciation is crisp to the ear!! Will keep a tab or two. ^^' Maybe. ;p
That said, as you mention, I can't help but notice from some snips out of your channel you've actually put out a lot of these kinds of video breakdowns, at least over the past year... considering how decently competent your work is I'd say it's 'bout time you've gotten some traction..!!
Your thumbnailer is likely correct in their presumptions; many people are probably more attracted to a longform video that goes in-depth on a single subject -- I know I do..! It might take a bit of extra editing and recording work, but...who knows, this might be the tide to ride on..!! I wish you luck..! *passes some luck* And as aforementioned, will be keeping open eyes for your stuff. ^^'

Yeah, it's just making hour long videos is....
MUCH more time consuming and not one I can easily do with my work and social life.

You should really look into the issues YT has had with that kind of content and adults accessing and sharing it with the worst of intentions. It's been quite a big issue for them and honestly theres a good chance you should be highly suspect of why those videos are getting so many views.
If you're only putting them up for friends or even archiving purposes I'd consider putting them up private or unlisted in the future.
I had a gaming website I started, just writing articles and updating stuff in my spare time. I ended up getting lots of industry contacts and games to review and swag and people offering to write content for me from the small fanbase that developed.
Some of the articles pushed 100,000+ views, which I am still astounded by, considering the life of the site was around two years total. That increasing traffic also caused my site to crash more and more, and I didn't run ads or make any money from it, so I eventually (and regrettably) just dropped everything.
I wish I would have at least kept the URL, which last I checked was redirecting to asian pornography.

What's wrong with letting someone else be happy about the views they're getting? No reason to be an asshole about it.
I put up a video and I checked in every day to see how many people viewed it. After a year it had more than 300 views!
12 years ago I made a shitty little 5 second youtube video that ended up getting 600K views. I did nothing with the channel otherwise.
i posted a clip from Gremlins of gizmo playing the keyboard and it has 361,000 view somehow. i did it at the time to share the clip with my girlfriend (now wife). people comment on it constantly.
It's easier to get tons of hits on something that violates copyright, for sure. I have well over 100k for an old documentary that I uploaded that's not available on DVD or in any streaming format.
That's probably not the way to get a healthy channel though, especially if you hope to monetize eventually.

Shit, I just checked my Channel. A Just Cause 2 video from 9 years ago has 127,000 views lol I had forgotten I even had any videos on my Channel. The other highest is 6,400 views. That one definitely got linked in an online Just Cause 2 guide and the first one must just have a clickbaity title. Damn, I loved Just Cause 2 back in the day.

I made a shitty review of the MadCatz Street Fighter IV FightPad like a decade ago that's currently sitting at 43K views. It's weird. When I checked the analytics back in the day a shit ton of traffic was coming from a handful of Latin American retailers selling the controller, though my review was entirely in English.

I don't know.... I'd like to do something that involves making videos for a living to be honest.
I've uploaded like 600 videos this year maybe? And guess what? The ones I put more effort in get almost no views and my most viewed videos from this year are just loops of Mai Shiranui GIFs.
Word of advice: it's not going to happen. The thing is, the market is just so saturated that it's almost impossible to stand out from others.

I've been making videos for over 11 years and have thousands of videos, I still only have like 1450 subscribers.

I've had my channel since 2006, have 383 videos, only have 335 subscribers. Highest view count is 249k.
