well he is the main character so he better be. I hope one day Tabata will reveal that the story was always about Yami surpassing his shounen limits.

Yeah the length of the series doesn't help for many from an outside perspective.
(Which is a shame cause even if it means I don't quite remember as much of what's here as with other series, the scope is still a big part of the appeal for me. It doesn't feel big just for the sake of it.)

A 10 episode Netflix adaptation should end at the Arlong arc if they want to world build properly and not just rush through everything.

Odens flashback is one of my favorite flashbacks in the series. A flashback that both is relevant to the current arc while having reveals about the entire world.
Not necessarily turning a flashback into a whole arc, but they are notorious for long filler arcs in the middle of another arc
I remember Naruto Shippuden making arcs out of flashbacks, though those were anime-original. Itachi and Kakashi had that.

Looking it up, Kakashi's novel seems to be about him as Hokage. So I guess at least his arc was anime-original.

I feel like One Piece dialog has a danger of sounding extremely corny coming out of actual human beings standing around each other. Like the comedy would be extremely hard to pull off.
