On my only playthrough of Dark Souls I accidentally killed the black cat sitting in the windows of those forest ruins and was so sad when I realized it was an NPC :( I wanted to be friends with the cat :(

Red Dead 2 numerous times when the prompt said "R2 to draw gun" when it really meant "to shoot gun"

It was in the first quarter of the game. Nothing truly terrible had happened yet. I was fighting off soldiers and the battle had migrated to a marketplace. The lights are off and the dust has kicked up and it's getting hard to see. There are enemies everywhere, popping out of the shadows and dropping in behind me. My trigger finger is getting itchy as every dark corner feels like it has someone waiting for me to walk by for them to get the drop on me. As I move through the level, nerves tense, a figure jumps out from behind a corner and my reflexes kick in, hitting them with an expertly placed headshot with instinctive precision.

A scared civilian woman falls dead at my feet.

It's not a cutscene. It's not scripted. It's not mandatory. In the chaos and confusion, I murdered an innocent refugee who was only trying to flee from the shootout. The game doesn't pause for me to soak it in. Bullets are still flying by my ears. Enemy soldiers are still trying to kill me. I get in cover... next to her body on the ground, fighting back. My teammates didn't see me do it. Nobody will ever know I did it. But... I know. And there is no one else to blame. I didn't mean to... but there she is, eyes open and body still, as I fight my way out of the market. I move out of that area and press on, leaving her behind as I advance through the market. But for the entire rest of the game, she was in my mind. I couldn't actually ever leave her fully behind. I had no penalties for killing her, no repercussions, no loss of support or skill. But... that's not what I meant to do. What have I DONE?!

Spec Ops The Line truly was something unique, the sort that does elevate videogames into an actual art form.

The impact of these sort of small moments on the player kind of goes out of the window when people spoil the game for you, though (much like Undertale which I'm not surprised to see a bunch of people doing so in this thread already). It really works best when you go in blind just thinking "hey, another shooter".

But either way, brilliant game. My own Spec Ops story comes
after they hang one of Walker's buds. You can just shoot the air to scare the locals away, but I didn't even think of that and immediately shot those people who were merely scared, living in such dreadful conditions and acted that way as a result. It didn't even dawn on me for a while that I could have perhaps avoided it. When it did however I finally understood just how much soul destroying actual military service in a hostile country must be. Us vs them, they deserved it, etc. Until you wake up one day and figure that many of those people you killed "on duty" didn't deserve to die and it was all on you -- and there's tons of people living with that all over the world. As someone who resides in a quiet, peaceful country in a forgotten zone of Europe, it really was the first time I got an idea what war PTSD meant.

I ruined my ME3 playthrough by shooting around out of boredom with the pistol and then deciding I wanna shot that kiddo. Apparently that was also a choice next to the blue, red and green ending.
The ending scenes were so long that Ive yet to do it again properly...
Picked the correct ending: "Fuck off with this limited-choice bullshit".

Just about the only good thing in ME3 ending is that shooting the kid is actually an option, if hidden one (otherwise waiting long-enough triggers the same ending IIRC).

Haha, I think that's an option they added later to the ending.

Honestly even though that's the "worst" ending (if I remember right you lose the war and the Reapers kill all advanced society again) it's still kinda neat in that it shows the next advanced species find Liara's time capsule which means they have a chance.

DaS: I killed Eingyi by accident, thought he was an enemy. Since I traded my flame away early (friend told me I can get another one… yeah…) I locked myself out of pyromancy for that save.

Pretty sure you could get another pyro glove by trading with the crow. Probably a red slab

Many years back while playing Fallout 3 I was admittedly not a good person in that game. There was a settlement where this boy talked some serious shit. Knowing that I couldn't shoot him I opted to launch a rocket to see if that would end his mouthy, snarky reign. He survived but I unintentionally blew his mother into giblets.

The first time I beat Demon's Souls the whole play through was such a dang nightmare and when I finally got to the end I was so relieved. But then I set down the controller on the final bit and the cool PS3 controller design pushed the trigger and my character killed the maiden in black. I stared at the screen for like 3 minutes with my mouth agape. Thankfully it was a valid ending choice. I didn't know that however. I thought I fucked up hugely.

There was an amazing story from the old country where a guy put his controller down during a NG+ Demon's Souls run to get a sandwich.

He came back to find his cat sitting on the controller. Pressing in R2.

Making him stab the Maiden in Black (the only character to let you level up in the game) repeatedly.

She was dead.

It had autosaved.

His character with hundreds of hours poured in was now stalled for good.

Yup, p much, lol

The most tragic part is that he didn't have to start over. The MiB is the only character who cannot die permanently.

In Oblivion, when I finally decided to complete the main quest, I was escorting Martin and (Joffrey?) to Cloud Ruler temple and we got into a random fight along the way. During the fight I accidentally smacked one of their horses which pissed them off. I could still complete the quest and each subsequent one but they wouldn't let me join the Blades and whenever I talked to them they put on their angry scowl faces.

In Sleeping Dogs, I swung a tire iron at some bad dude and accidently brained a civilian that was running for her life.

Whoops.

Feels like a Souls thread. I had to kill Solaire once early on because I had accidentally hit him. Did not know about pardons and stuff at the time. That was a lonely play through for sure.

I accidentally hit Solaire of Astora in Annor Londo, right next to the bonfire. That triggered him and made him permanently aggressive. It made my playthrough considerably more difficult since I didn't want to kill him, but I also couldn't stand still and do some leveling/inventory management to prepare for the nearby boss (which was the hardest boss in the game for me, up until that point).

This happened in Skyrim recently. One of the first NPCs you meet, someone who'd just helped me and given me shelter.

I arrive back in the first town and suddenly everyone was attacking me and I didn't know why. I attacked the person shooting at me.

And it was this NPC. It was really immersion breaking and I still feel bad about it.

In the beginning of Gravity Rush, I was trying out the controls to see how the flying works. When I touch back on the ground, I notice a few things moving through the air and falling off the edge of the platform. I then realised that Kat doesn't affect just her own personal gravity, but that her powers work in an AoE. She had lifted up some NPCs and flung them over the edge of the town into the abyss below. Oops.

Goldeneye on 64. I remember it being an escort mission and after killing an innocent by mistake the person I was escorting refused to follow me. I had to reset.

Skyrim was pretty much the game of "What stupid/glitchy way can I get my NPC partner killed?"

My favorite was when I was doing the Dragonborn questline and had two of them traveling with me at once. At the end of a long dungeon they both suddenly decided the other was an enemy and proudly killed each other.

In Shadow of War when I summon in a dire caragor or graug or a drake, I don't execute them, I just dismount.

While this isn't an "Accidentally killing an NPC" story, it feels related.

While back I decided to try out Witcher 3, see what all the buzz was about. I'm not really much of a WRPG person but I like to give them a chance every now and then. Was fighting a monster by the side of the road when a patrolling NPC guard walked right in the middle of my fight, was hit by my sword, aggroed on me and killed me.

Was instantly reminded of why I hate WRPGs and haven't picked it up since.

The first time I played Resident Evil 4, when I got to the island area I ended up accidentally killing the merchant due to him being in the vicinity of a grenade that I threw at some enemies. I decided to reset.

Some of my most satisfying trolls in Dark Souls are the times I invaded and managed to get someone to aggro an NPC. Hiding in the barrel room in the depths and just rolling like crazy till they accidentally hit the pyromancer or invading in Anor Londo and getting them to swing at Solaire. Dickwraithing at its finest!

It's not quite killing but in Witcher 3, when you have the option to 'shove an important NPC aside forcefully', it actually means you take them down and break their leg like a twig, which makes that person not like you and locks out a potential alternate path.

Lydia in Skyrim. She died in a boss fight and I didn't find out until later that she can't be killed except by the player... it must have been a wild swing or something.

The first time I killed Anna Navarre was genuinely an accidental killing and I thought I broken the game at that point.

Then came Alex on the comm system and suddenly everything I thought I knew about the game changed.

Was my second playthrough and it shown the depth of the game and how you could change so many things via your actions.

I'm sure a lot of my play through of Fallout 3 is exactly this. I have no idea how many side quests I missed out on.

Yep. Its espcially scary when your out in the open workd and you see someone running towards you, wondering if there an enemy or a random quest giver.

Most of my Far Cry 5 hostage rescues end up in at least one huge flaming explosion, I feel bad for the poor animals that get caught in it. :(

The NPCS and companions are hillarious because of how dumb they are. They will see you throw a grenade and seemingly try to dive onto a grenade, and when driving or trying to kill someone they dont care if they kill you or other npc's in the process

While playing the Godfather, I accidently performed an execution on an NPC during a gunfight. I was horrified that my character knocked down the woman and then suddenly shot her point blank in the face with a shotgun. The Godfather game was pretty brutal, but man was it a fun alt. to GTA.

ACOd: Oh, I'm being hunted by a mercenary because I killed a cultist! Dang, they found me while I'm in a city! Oh now guards are showing up and attacking me, but only me! Fine. I defend myself. Now civilians are picking up swords and attacking me? Why?

Also I did the flashbang ability, whoops that killed a chicken nearby, somehow, now the villagers are angry at me...
