But didn't Shūeisha say One Piece was number 1 this year?
I'm gonna answer this first, since I know people are gonna ask.

ManganiMY wrote a detailed explanation here.

But TL;DR :
The statement wasn't from Shueisha themselves, it was taken from an interview with the One Piece editor, who likely did not know the up-to-date numbers. The interview was also likely made about a month before the end of the tracking period, month during which Demon Slayer sold millions of copies. Also, it's likely he was talking about the number of copies in circulation, not the actual sell-through data

So basically, just some miscommunication

Jeez...is Demon Slayer really that good? So much hype about it. But then again Assassination Classroom also sold really well few years ago I thought it was boring.

It's been amazing seeing all these one piece "fans" come out of the woodwork to deny this claim. Like both mangas didn't sell a shit ton and do really well and one piece is so holy that it needs to be #1 on every list lol.

Good on Kimitsu no Yaiba. The author out in hard work and it's paying off for her. Op is still gonna be number one but it's nice that something is challenging it head-on.

Its not miscommunication sheuisha retweeted the news about OP being number 1, and its been reported by different outlets. People are basically saying sheuisha the publisher of both series is lying, and to basically just believe a company that tracks sales, but doesnt have the full picture

I need the full breakdown of this conspiracy, I feel this is like Vgchartz vs financial reports from game companies but somehow people trust the tracker more than the actual source.

I'm gonna answer this first, since I know people are gonna ask.

Didn't Shueisha themselves state One Piece sold 12.7 million and Oricon doesn't actually track all retail stores so Shueisha should know between the two.

I'd personally trust Shueisha on this, but that's just me.

Yeaaaah, it's weird people take a 3rd party's tracking over the company that owns both series. Does Oricon take into account digital sales or is missing something valuable?

I don't quite understand the ravenous demand for Demon Slayer. I read the first volume and thought it was pretty good. When I went to my local comic shop to pick up the second volume I was told that it's almost impossible to get (English) copies of the manga because they sell out almost instantly. Is it because of the anime?

Yeah. A boost this large (not being on the list last year to almost/beating One Piece) usually only comes from an already popular series ending or a very succesful anime and this has both

Take a look at Attack on Titan's sales in 2014 when the anime first came out

I've heard nothing but good things about the anime so I suppose it makes sense. What's the popular series that ended recently, by the way?

It had a really good anime adaption that blew up.

I'd take more credence from the official publisher who has every internal data about the manga they publish than with Oricon.

Promised Neverland is ending (supposedly) and so is Demon Slayer (also supposedly I dont read it)

If you look back at when Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist or Death Note were ending they all got boosts. In Demon Slayer's case, the new volumes aren't selling even close to One Piece's new volumes. Whats happening is people buying the back catalog, which can multiply sales by a multitude.

One Piece obviously isn't over, but when what would become the first half of the manga was ending in a massive arc the sales turned out like this -

Thats mostly back catalog.

There's no conspiracy. Sheushia has been trying to find something to overtake One Piece for ages now. This is why they invest so heavily into series that get any sort of inkling of popularity like Toriko or My Hero Academia. It's in their best interest for Yaiba to beat One Piece's sales.

Even Shueisha themself uses Oricon (how else would they have known that One Piece had beaten Attack on Titan by barely 150k units in 2014? They don't publish AoT, they don't have its data). Moreover, they don't necessarily have their own data for physical sell-through (that's why there exists entire companies that track those sales, such as Oricon, NPD or Media Create), they do know about digital sales and how many units of a manga are in circulation.
The source is not quite Shueisha: It's from an interview with the One Piece editor. The rest, I already explained here

Even if we want to believe Shueisha, and say that One Piece stays #1, the comparison still stands with other years tracked by Oricon. And the facts are there: Demon Slayer was the first manga to beat One Piece according to Oricon since Death Note and Nodame Cantabile in 2006.

Fascinating stuff. It's remarkable that One Piece experienced a similar sales boost despite not actually ending (yet.)

Isn't JUMP itself saying One Piece had the higher sales?

You claimed that Shueisha was lying to protect One Piece so...
Never said Shueisha was lying.

My point was this: Shueisha/OP editor/whoever it was releases end of year numbers (circulation/sold/???), which they hardly ever do, right before Oricon releases theirs, knowing Oricon will have Kimetsu above OP.

It's complicated

I'm gonna try and do another TL;DR:
-Jump didn't say this, the One Piece editor did, in an interview
-There is also a translation issue: he was referring to the number of volumes in circulation when Oricon tracks sell-through data.
-He likely did said interview a month before the end of the tracking period, back when One Piece did have more copies in print that Demon Slayer, this quickly changed. Even Shueisha says so with their announcements, here are the Demon Slayer circulation numbers, from Shueisha themselves:
2018/11/26 3 Million
...
2019/09/29 12 Million
2019/10/17 14 Million
2019/10/23 16 Million
2019/11/21 20 Million
2019/11/26 25 Million

But if you really want to know more, I suggest reading what ManganiMY wrote, it's in the threadmark

But didn't Shūeisha say One Piece was number 1 this year?
Oda commented on his Twitter about this.

They're saying One Piece had the highest individual volume sales this year, not the most volume sales this year.

Kimetsu no Yaiba is #1 with overall sales, One Piece is #1 with individual volume sales.

They're using a different metric to determine victory.

Individual volume sales, not overall highest.

Each One Piece volume sold over two million. KnY's individual volume sales are just now hitting one million each.

However, KnY sold more volumes overall, even though the individual volume sales are lower.
Sadly, this explanation doesn't hold up when they announced numbers: 12.7 million for One Piece and 10.8m for Demon Slayer. Those aren't individual volume sales

Which is likely due to human error. I'm a mod on MH, so I'm fully aware of this situation and have been talking with analysts about it for over a day now.

Someone was using old sales data in regards to KnY, not up-to-date.

Bleach must have taken quite the tumble to let Fairy Tail get in front of it.
