He needs to be extradited back to the US and face justice immediately. Can you imagine if a BIPOC had done even a tenth of what this literal piece of shit did? People of Colour get locked up and killed for selling loose cigarettes, meanwhile this colonizer builds a nazi training camp all in the name of freeze peach and then just skates off to gentrify other cultures? Fuck white supremacy.

Mr. Glass was the best twist. I forgot I was watching a MNS film and I forgot there was going to be a twist. So when it hit at the end, it got me.

This dude is interviewed on NYT's The Daily podcast today. Can't say I find him too sympathetic. Seems fine if he wants to fuck off to the Philippines and live in obscurity.

Imagine if someone setup ISISChan and you had several domestic terrorist attacks directly linked to it.

We would have droned this guy into the dust. Or just have Duterte disappear him.

But no, we have these bizaro articles humanising this nazi shit stain.

This dude fucking sucks for his role in Gamergate. Shitheads in that propped him up like a human shield pretending like having a guy with disabilities involved with it proved they weren't utterly morally bankrupt.

He made a choice back in the day to side with something completely terrible, full stop.

That was an interesting read. I've been on the internet forever (like acoustic coupler/bbs forever), but never really experienced chan sites. Based on who I was as a very angry and abrasive late teen/20's small town disabled kid in the late 90s that's probably for the best.

Interesting read. But the guy is a massive prick and the way the article frames him as some innocent bystander in creating a safe space for the worst humanity has to offer? Fuck off.

I hate feeling bad for someone that founded a website that has contributed to so much hate, death, and pain, but reading the first ~40% of it I feel bad for him as a child. The article doesn't even describe why but his parents divorce, his father gets custody of him as a child, and loses custody of him, he goes into foster care, as a very disabled person that's... sad. My sadness for him doesn't make up for his complicity in extreme viewpoints and the horrendous results, but that's a really hard childhood.

*Edit*

Added 'as a child' because I don't feel bad for the choices he's made as an adult

Same. I've been an avid BBS since the early 90s and grew up with rudimentary forums like this one, but I never got into the Chan thing. I used to stop by 4chan in the mid-2000s at some point, getting memes (before they were called memes) or whatever, but I never actively used it. The design of most chans, the anonymity (and no pseudonymity), and the chaos of them were all turn-offs for me, while seeming to be a selling point for certain people. I was never into anime either and I always associated the chan sites with anime jokes that I didn't understand.

I knew about 4chan and 2chan mostly because ... being a videogame forum regular for 25 years you kinda had to know about it eventually, but I never got the sites when I would visit them or get linked to a thread. Never knew about 8chan until the aftermath of GamerGate with retrospectives on it.

I'm glad he has seemingly changed.

Nobody has the obligation to forgive him or anything though.

An extraordinary amount of people deal with debilitating medical conditions and difficult family circumstances.

All without becoming a Nazi and creating a terrorist training ground.

Yeah, I'm not defending him or explaining away any of this, but I still feel weirdly bad for any child that grows up in that sort of situation.

He really... really does not seem to take much responsibility in that article. Also the article's position that he created the site "by accident" seems to not really be consistent with the stated account of the events. Like... he invited the gamergate crowd there, what was the accident

I personally don't agree with this. Just because they could go to another site, it doesn't mean that we should do nothing or justify our creation. Yeah they can go to another site but a rapid migration is so difficult to pull off well.

Agreed. ResetERA is a prime example of this. If the shit that went down on GAF hadn't happened the way it did, this site wouldn't exist. And even if someone had created an alternative GAF, without the driving event there just wouldn't have been a mass migration.

Just finished the article.

What an absolute crock of shit. I work with foster youth, many of whom have mental health, developmental and physical disabilities - and while they're filled with anger and certainly have their issues - they're a far cry from this piece of shit.

This article is absolutely disgusting. Why in the fuck are we trying to drum up sympathy for this dude? The article literally doesn't mention the word Pedophile once, which this site was an open safe haven for since it's inception. The article tries to push the narrative that it was a hunger for free speech gone wrong, but this dude was actively rubbing elbows with pedophiles without issue - before the site morphed into something increasingly more racist, misogynistic and bigoted.

I'm absolutely shook at the level of irresponsible journalism at display here. I swear to God, no matter the infraction, society goes out of its way to perform the most mind bending mental gymnastics to prevent white dudes from having to take full ownership of their misgivings.

In the meantime, Brennan's online identity was developing. "I was known as the guy who was always talking about eugenics, that was my thing," he says. He posted about it every day. In 2014, he wrote a disturbing essay, published on the white supremacist website The Daily Stormer, calling for the sterilisation of people with diseases like his. It simmers with anger, especially at his father, whom he calls "a complete deadbeat". It ends: "I am simply asking for compassion from an ignorant society that falsely believes it is unethical to give genetically defective people incentives not to reproduce. I am simply arguing for a world full of healthy, happy children who can play outside with their friends without breaking their legs."

Brennan's views on eugenics were unarguably appalling, but they should also be seen in the context of his experience. He hated his parents for bringing him into a life of pain, and it led him to this monstrous viewpoint. "I don't want to speak for everybody with a disability, but I hate being disabled and I always have," he tells me.

Damn. What can you even say.

No simpy. Pedo nazi enabler. And no one here knows what exactly is his way of thinking nowadays, the only palpable thing is all the harm he caused with his shithole of a site. Seems to me he's just saving face now that shit has hit the fan.

did you read the article?
You didn't read the article.
So, you didn't read the article.
I read the article. Dude was a child pornography enabling nazi platform providing eugenicist.

He was raised by a edgy hate site that trained him that being the most audaciously vile is commendable. So no, I don't think he should be compared to Mr. Glass because he would probably take it as a compliment.

It's crazy that such a young person can hold so much hate at that age. It's even crazier that adults followed and agreed with a kid's crazy ideas.

Seems like full on remorse came later.
Sorry, where is the remorse? This?

When he sees news like the Christchurch shooting, Brennan says it makes him "worried for the future".

Were I one of the family members of the 51 people murdered there by a person radicalized on the site this guy willingly, non-accidentally created, I wouldn't take much comfort in that.

Bullshit redemption narrative. Wow, I'm sooo impressed that this guy fucked off to Asia, got married and has "converted to Christianity" after all the harm he's caused and doesn't even seem sorry for. A real class act.

Mr. Glass was a deplorable human being who got dealt a shitty hand. Smart guy, but shitty. That's the only parallels I can find. I can't say I'd ever give someone some pretentious title like that, I was simply pointing out that I could tell the guy didn't read the article.

So he was just a poor kid with a tough childhood that naively invited a couple of bad people to his personal little blog. but all is good because now he converted to christianity.

lol. what a bad article

I'm still dumbfounded this was made so recently. I thought this site had been around for as long as 4chan. The creator is only a year older than me.

At least I'm glad that some people here are not willing to fall for BS articles that try to whitewash a shitheel for no goddamn reason.
No wonder the media is so willing to pardon Trump for anything when you can find so easily articles to explain how really the nazi enabler pedo eugenicist just had a rough childhood so everything is ok.

Having remorse is fine and all, but the dude needs to be held accountable for what he's done.

And yeah, I'm definitely on the team that doesn't think his remorse is very legit. He should've shut down the website when he had the chance, not go all "woe is me" when the website he created, cultivated and then handed over to clearly dangerous people turns out to be complicit in, among others, murder.

Way to dramatize what is ultimately a dude making a site so he could have an easier time whacking it to illegal pornography.

This is an awful article, it's like the author was more interested in making a sad story about a poor disabled guy than reporting the facts.
He completely glossed over the fact that 8chan was a haven for pedos, how can you ignore that. Awful journalism.

The guy doesn't sound remorseful at all and the religious conversion doesn't make him a good man and I insist, this guy created a site that tolerated pedophiles, not a single mention on the article.
