Some quotes

Batman Returns have truly balanced dark with light. This one didn't have a point of view on politics or class, and its depiction of mental illness was irresponsible. Joaquin was so over the top it became irritating.

But I'm torn, as an Oscar voter, about what to do. The business it's doing is mind-blowing — 'Taxi Driver 2' just opened to almost $300 million worldwide! But I don't know what's responsible to do as a voter. If art is not used to start a conversation, and it's just used to exacerbate something, I'm not sure how beneficial it is. It's too fresh to know yet what I'll do with it. I don't know if it should be banned or it should be given every award!"

"I'm reluctant to see the film at all."

"I have not seen it, but you can say I'm with Marty [Scorsese, who recently said he is not a fan of comic book movies]!"

"I haven't seen Joker, nor do I plan to. I know it's out of fashion to say, but comic book movies hold zero interest for me."

"I haven't yet seen Joker, and the LA Times story today doesn't impel me to put at the top of my screener viewing."

"I haven't seen it yet, but when I do see it I will be sitting right next to the exit! So crazy to have to think like this, but we have to."

This is so unbelievably stupid but then again, they're Oscar voters. I wouldn't expect anything less.

Their reasoning is stupid sure.

But eh, it's not that great of a movie either way. I enjoyed it but hardly Oscar material in my opinion.

I think the ban comment was clearly a joke, not a serious proposition. This title is a little misleading about that.

Even Joker isn't safe from Martin Scorsese. Seems like more of these comments are leaning towards that than the movie being dangerous

Oscars continue to be irrelevant and oh, so so white.
I would be willing to guess which race this voter is:
I don't think this film is going to exacerbate those problems. Nor will the elimination of guns solve our problems. We have to work on our society, in general. My mantra these days is that it's not about diversity, it's about celebrating the commonalities of our humanity, those qualities all human beings share. That's right out of Martin Luther King's book

I'm sure they're all equally disgusted by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's reprehensible violence porn ending.

Sure they are.

To be fair, the consensus is pretty much "haven't seen it yet". Oscar voters aren't usually out rushing opening weekend for new films. Either they're seeing them in festivals months in advance, or seeing them on the FYC runs done by studios on special invitation.

Fucking idiots
Are these the same imbeciles who gave best pic to green book over blackkklansman?

I don't even think Joker was some super amazing movie. I just think their comments that are broadly a refusal to watch capeshit while handing Oscars to complete shit just because they gladhanded with the director are way out of touch

I think the thread title is misleading.
As for the actual comments:
What a joke.
How old are these people?
Also, isn't it their job to actually watch these movies so they can vote on everything? How can they say they might not even watch them or bail early?
If they can't be arsed to put in the time then get the fuck out of there.

This happens all the time. It's absolutely stupid but we've had enough snippets to know that some Oscar voters really don't deserve that honor.

Movie should've been directed/written/starred a combination of scorsese, polanski, allen, and scarjo

OP, be honest. Did you cherrypick those quotes? I read that article in the morning and there were plenty of members who did like it.

Never meet your heroes, I remember a time when I thought the Oscars were meaningful awards handed out to the best films decided by an expert panel of judges.

There should be a rule where threads can only be titled after the article's title. Literally the first quote is positive.
"I saw it Saturday at the official Academy screening (there were about 500 in attendance). And while a film that dark and disturbing isn't going to get the kind of rapturous reception of a more upbeat movie, it was very well received. I think it's brilliant. Phoenix has never been better. The way he and the filmmakers handle the transformation from Arthur into Joker is nuanced and masterful. I loved the way they dealt with the 'unreliable narrator' aspect of the story, as we learn, bit by bit, what really happened versus Arthur's 'reality.' I thought that the DP, production designer and others created the look and feel of the period really well, and the fact that it has very contemporary themes of economic/class inequities felt just right. Overall, a home run."

With as much free publicity as this film is getting, if it doesn't make half a billion, it should be considered a flop

Oscar has been horrible for so many years now, it's rarely about the quality of the movie but moreso about the political/social message behind it. I don't expect Joker to fall in line with the kind of messages the Oscars want to push, so I doubt it'll do well, but who knows.

So dumb, just watch it and judge. The more they do this, the more it will be seen as a masterpiece, which really isn't.

Oscar voters are a pathetic joke.
Never forget this quote from one voter regarding best animated film:
I only watch the ones that my kid wants to see, so I didn't see [The] Boxtrolls but I saw Big Hero 6 and I saw [How to Train Your] Dragon [2]. We both connected to Big Hero 6 — I just found it to be more satisfying. The biggest snub for me was Chris Miller and Phil Lord not getting in for [The] Lego [Movie]. When a movie is that successful and culturally hits all the right chords and does that kind of box-office — for that movie not to be in over these two obscure freakin' Chinese fuckin' things that nobody ever freakin' saw [an apparent reference to the Japanese film The Tale of the Princess Kaguya,as well as the Irish film Song of the Sea]? That is my biggest bitch. Most people didn't even know what they were! How does that happen? That, to me, is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

So, do these people only ever watch movies that seem Oscar-worthy? So, in theory, they probably would never watch something like Billy Madison or Fast Times (at least not on purpose)? Damn.

This is ridiculous lmao. The movie is barely a comic book movie. You could cut a few scenes, call it "The Laughing Man" and it would be praised as a compelling and insightful look into society's failure to protect the mentally ill.

I thought it would be about violence or some crap, but it's only because it's a comic book movie lol

A lot of Oscar voters are dumb assholes but I don't think that ban comment is meant to be taken seriously either.

The same people that still regularly nominate Woody Allen movies.

I don't think Woody has been nominated for anything but Match Point and Midnight in Paris in like the last 20 years?

embarrassing, but honestly anyone who still gives a shit about the Oscars are delusional anyway.
