Not surprised, the credits are over 15 minutes. Definitely shows, it's the game of the genetation and revolutionary in aaa stories, visuals, etc.

There are diffrent tiers among AAA game - plenty of games that are labeled as AAA by a publisher and their PR department won't have anywhere close to the budget and workforce of TLOU2.

At this point AAA means mostly having pretty endless ressources to outsource the creation of tons of high end assets. One of the main pillars of Capcoms comeback this generation.

Absolutely incredible that they were able to manage so many outside studios and still create a cohesive vision.

Is outsourcing common or uncommon in games?
I have no idea how it usually works in this industry.

Very common these days. For instance for Kena the main team is only 15 people and the rest of the game is outsourced, of course it doesn't even come close to AAA games in numbers.

Same with FF7R. Multiple teams and different companies around the world. I counted at least a dozen companies, each for different areas in the game and most for specific cutscenes

And the game made its money back already or close to it I'm sure so idk why it's a bad thing. We need more games like the TLOU2 and RDR2 if you ask me. Like imagine instead of an assassin creed every year or two years it's every three years?

I bet the games would be way better and would sell better individually although it wouldn't be as profitable as yearly releases it will still be profitable if the games Dev costs paid off like in instances like this and RDR2.

Surprised at people being surprised by outsourcing.

No AAA game is being developed exclusively in one studio.

I remember hearing how Guerrilla Games outsourced art for Horizon: Zero Dawn, and people were shocked about that.

Wonder what the break down for that game is.

I don't think the OP or anyone here was trying to frame this as a bad thing, almost all, if not all, AAA games outsource to a degree. Even bad ones.

What's the budget of the game?

It's an absolute technical and visual masterpiece. Its no wonder it would demanded so many resources.

Weird that they outsourced it
Big triple A studios usually need to have tons of assets done in a very minimum amount of time. They cannot always ask their own employees to do all the stuff, and will very often outsource this task, call other studios that are specialised in this specific field (artwork, character design, etc) to work on it for them.

It's very common, many big studios do that.

Fucking hell, is that the 2nd most after RDR2 (had over 3K)? 1K seems to usually be the top end we hear, though I don't know if they include all outsourcing.
As others have said it shows, game has a ridiculous amount of detail in pretty much every area, regardless of how long you'd realistically spend there.

Edit: v holy fuck at Odyssey, I know Ubi usually have a lot from there studios alone.

Somewhere
When VR overtakes 2D-screen experiences, games will become the largest produced products of entertainment ever. Most of us will live in our VR lives, while the rest of humanity just uploads code.

Odyssey had over 4400.

Very interesting stuff OP. Looked at other AAA games on that website to compare...

Red Dead 2 - 7321 people (4135 developers, 3186 thanks)
COD: MW - 3328 people (3262 developers, 66 thanks)
Gears 5 - 1674 people (1416 developers, 258 thanks)
Zelda: BOTW - 916 people (888 developers, 28 thanks)
We already knew it but that industry is really huge

Yeah I was about to reply saying that BOTW is a better example of a AAA Nintendo production than Animal Crossing lol

Yep, this very common and companies use a huge amount of people to make AAA games.
