As a long time fan of stand-up comedy do us a favour...if you think you're the reincarnated version of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Carlin...go up on stage so that healthy dose of reality brings you back down to earth. You are not a comedian, so stop trying to be one on Twitter of all places.
No fun allowed?

Isn’t this what James Gunn basically did yet Era defended him to the death? I guess it’s different when you’re part of the Marvel crown jewel here.

James gunn's thing was an old tweet, this was made in the past week and clearly violated MS's mixer policies

Are you talking about the stuff that James Gunn did nearly a decade ago, had previously apologised for, committed to growing and improving, delivered on the commitment to grow and improve, and then years later experienced a second backlash for?

I think this guy is right to get banned from Mixer etc right now, but if he in the future sees the error of his judgement and makes a commitment to improve, then spends years delivering on that improvement, and someone digs up this old tweet a decade later, I would say that any backlash in 2029 would be unwarranted.

Streamers.. were a mistake. Streaming is cool and all.. but mankind keeps looking for people to worship, power goes to their heads and then saying fucking dumb vile things becomes a norm. How else do assholes keep gaining followers but by saying and doing cringy, edgy, vile, despicable things?

This kind posts remind me how much disconnected ERA is from everyday life and reality of places like Mixer or Twitch.

Over generalizing every streamer into same tiny basket because all people seem to be exposed here for most part when it comes to streaming is these news.

People here should watch e.g. CohhCarnage, Dansgaming, Annemunition, Sacriel, Shroud... to see how by an large successful streamers behave and stream.

User Banned (Permanent): Dismissing concerns around pedophilia; prior severe ban for dismissing concerns on transphobia
OP I think you are way too sensitive about jokes in particular. I’m not surprised or upset that Microsoft/Mixer took action. But I’m aware that there’s nuance and I believe there is an appropriate place for those kinds of jokes. I wonder how you feel about hockey fans joking that Auston Matthews is a pedophile. That has happened inside the NHL thread and it’s just a whatever comment. Not really that offensive. Or I wonder how you feel about Dave Chapelle joking about Michael Jackson. To me that was legitimately hilarious.

Dude this is ResetEra, you cant joke here with a risk of a ban

Good, it was a terrible and tasteless joke, especially when children really are being preyed upon in Fortnite and other online games. This article on the subject was just printed a week or so ago:

Straight up: this Is a fucking dumb edgelord move. You read that title right. I’m wondering if Twitch would ever bother doing something like this. 80k is nothing in the grand order of Streaming overlords but you kinda deserve to lose everything when this happens. It’ll be interesting if Twitch resign him or not.

Didn’t see a thread about this but before you say “who?” remember the following:
  1. You don’t joke about sex with kids - infinitely so when you’re playing a game that’s geared primarily towards kids.
  2. You don’t joke about being convicted for having sex with kids
  3. Repeat the above.
sources:
If you’ve got kids it’s always worth a glance to check who they’re currently following on social media. Maybe it’s this kind of clown.

Oh you can fuck off. (Not the OP)

Social media and gaming has inadequate protection for children to begin with, having people shout "hey I'm a pedophile" is fucking obnoxious.

What a terrible comparison. Already reasoned why above. You really couldn't figure that out for yourself?

I think the interesting thing here with Mixer is that there is this reverse relationship compared to Twitch where being a Partner on Mixer means you are held to a higher standard. He probably thought he had made it and could pull stuff like that.

Unlike Twitch and YouTube, Mixer might not grant you edgelord immunity just on account of being one of the bigger names on the platform.

Either way, it’s always nice with a dystopian reminder that we’re one bad day on the Internet away from having our livelihoods taken away if we hitch our wagon entirely to Twitch or Mixer without diversifying our online presence.

Pretty sure Mixer made a big deal about community standards since day one. Why anyone would risk an established career like this over a stupidly obvious bad idea is beyond me.

It's probably residual feelings of immunity left over from being on Twitch and getting away with whatever.

The good news is that the vast majority of streamers are okay folk.

The bads news is some of the most popular ones are horrible influences.

And this guy already apologized, deleted the tweet and will likely never be heard from again. Yet look at the first page of replies.

Wait this tweet is from a decade ago?
Is it less worse to joke about being a pedophile 10 years ago

Like I said, he apologized, deleted the tweet and will never be heard from again but all people want to do is celebrate a bad joke getting this guy fired.

Try not to be offended by everything. What does this have to do with liberals? I voted for the Liberals in Canada but OK. You got me.

Mixer doing good work. Twitch would let it go if he was bringing in big bucks or platform engagement, then face a backlash and ban the next couple of small streamers who did even a fraction of what the 2 million-plus follower account did, in an attempt to look like they actually do enforce their own guidelines. Shoutouts to Fareeha.

If James Gunn made those jokes whilst working for Disney, of course he would be fired immediately. I'm pretty sure when he was making Troma films edgy jokes were more tolerated.

Freedom of speech is not the same as getting to work for corporations like Microsoft and Epic, making them look bad, and never being able to suffer any professional consequences.

If people had dug up a joke he had made a decade ago, which he had long ago apologised for and never repeated that type of humour, and then he got banned from Mixer today, I would be totally on his side.

Look I’m not talking about company policy. I’m talking about the reaction to similar types of jokes and one being “good fuck this guy” and another being “this guy should be given the benefit of the doubt”

Ok so you're arguing nuance doesn't exist?

Who do you think the audience of James Gunn's 2009 twitter followers was?

Who do you think the audience of "People watching Fortnite on Mixer" is?

It's a completely false equivalence and you're either being dumb or disingenuous if you don't see that.

He probably thought he was going to increase his following with crap like that, which isn’t hard to imagine is successful, sadly. Only companies like Mixer taking a stand can put a stop to that. It would probably have been career-advancing otherwise. The internet blows, man.

Wait, Mixer has... standards? I'm kinda reeling from a streaming platform actually caring what their streamers say.

Good on Microsoft.

Only problem with it is that his audience is mostly kids watch him. If his audience was adults, I’d have no problem with the joke. Ya’ll who say “you can never make jokes about such topic” are completely, inherently wrong though. Look to Anthony Jesselnik or even some of Bo Burnham’s jokes.

That and it's a corporation with an obvious vested interest in not endorsing this kind of humour that is paying his salary.

How can you not get the difference:

1. Person made joke many years ago. Has since grown, distanced themselves from that mindset, and proven to be better. Loses work despite the above.

Vs

2. Person made joke while employed by current company. Loses partnership.

Huge difference.

Fair enough. Corporations will use any reason to drop your ass unless you’re bringing in the BIG BUCKAROOS. In that case, they’ll try to get you a prison livestream. “What’s up, gamers! Comin’ at you from the LA Precinct. Let’s get those Epic Vic-Royals!”

1. Mixer community guidelines are clear and were a pretty big focus when MS made their push a while back.

2. Accountability for gross shit, that sites like Twitch have rarely had.

The guy knew where he was. He can always go back to Twitch.

1) it’s making light of a serious problem in the world. People grooming kids online
2) it puts Xbox and Fortnite as brands into disrepute. By extension that goes to Nintendo and Sony as other places where your kids aren’t safe from Fortnite players.
3) if I said this on Twitter as a joke my employer would fire me instantly

And 3 is the real point here.

Places like Twitch made some people feel immune to accountability. The world caught up with them.
