Week 12, 2018 - All Formats (Units)

It's almost the end of Q1 and this week there are 6 new entries within the Entertainment Software Top 40 (Units), 4 of which take the Top 4.

In comparison, this week last year there was only 1 new release (EA's 'Mass Effect Andromeda') and that outsold the week 1 for all 6 from this week. Debuting at No1 this week is Ubisoft's long-awaited 'Sea of Thieves' Xbox One box release. New at No2 is EA's prison break 'A Way Out' for PS4/Xbox One. Debuting at No3 is Bandai Namco's sequel to 2013's PS3 'Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch' (debuted at No1 in week 5, 2013) – 'Ni No Kuni II Revenant Kingdom' launches on PS4/PC and actually debuts at No2 by revenue, due to the success of special editions such as the King's Edition (£139.99 RRP). In fact, week 1 units for 'Ni No Kuni II' special editions make up around one-third of volume, but double that in terms of revenue share, and offer retailers something over and above a standard digital SKU. Back to unit order and debuting at No4 is Ubisoft's 'Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered' for PS4/Xbox One. EA's 'FIFA 18' takes No5 and last week's No1, EA's 'Burnout Paradise Remastered' drops to No6. The final 2 new releases within the Top 40 are Koei Tecmo's 'A.O.T. 2' (Attack on Titan) at No17 for PS4, Switch, Xbox One and the final new release at No23 is Nintendo's 3DS 'Detective Pikachu'.

I wish we knew how Ni No Kuni II's launch compares to the first one, I'm really enjoying the game so far. It's also the #2 game in value, the collector did notably pretty good.

Steam wise it's a little too early to judge but the launch seems decent enough.

I'd love to know how NNK2's sales compare with the first, looks like a decent debut though.

Sea Of Thieves, YAY!

And that's not counting digital sales and gamepass, right?

Sales must still be in the gutter if Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered gets number 4 and A Way Out gets number 2.

Sea of Thieves is Rare's second No.1 in a row, following 2015's Rare Replay. The previous time the acclaimed UK studio topped the charts was in 1998 with Banjo-Kazooie.

Some quick notes.

GfK is basically irrelevant without digital data. Even more so for games like Sea of Thieves that have both digital download and Gamepass versions of the game missing from the sales. Looking at the packaged sales numbers alone, you'd think the game didn't do very well because it sold similar numbers to Quantum Break packaged. But then you remember that digital skews higher on Xbox, Gamepass has a free trial, not to mention there is a PC version too and ultimately it's really hard to know just how much it sold based on the GfK number.

Ni No Kuni 2 opened lower than the first game did on PS3. But with digital sales missing, it's hard to know what it actually sold in total and if it was indeed higher than the first game. The main takeaway though is that Ni No Kuni remains fairly niche in the UK.

So to sum up. GfK is becoming more and more irrelevant and I can't wait for GSD to take over in 2019.

Good on rare. People buying the game even though its on gamepass. Shows there is something that many people enjoy there. Now for Rare to take a superb base and build on it.

Yeah that's a reasonable take on the situation. Disappointing to hear that NNK2 debuted lower than the original regardless, I was hoping it could do better.

That's really interesting. I knew it would do well (for player count) but I kinda assumed it would suffer in the chart as a result of GP.
before celebrating we should wait and see the numbers . it is doing better than rest but we dont know the units. the issue it will face is that for next week FC5 will cut into its sales big time on XB1 due to the fanbase love for FPS genre.

So, SoT sold on par with QB, but the digital portion may have made up for that.

Got to see where its legs will take it now.

You wouldn't think so, but Kirby has very strong legs! Good drop for the game, and that on top of being the biggest debut for the franchise. Doing well!

Thanks Zhuge. About Ni no Kuni II we also need to take the Steam launch into account (the first one launched only on PS3). It's a little early to judge that one since SteamSpy needs at least 4 days to draw a real picture.

So… bad numbers actually, especially for NNK2?
Didn't see any copies of NnK2 at the Asda or Smyths Toys store by me even the day before release, so it looks like the numbers shipped were quite low or only enough to fulfill preorders. There was definitely more hype around the first game, with it being co-produced by Studio Ghibli, and Drippy being the infinitely more lovable mascot.

I ended up buying it digital on the PS store.
