October 2020

The football game was comfortably the biggest selling title of the month. Digital and physical FIFA sales are down about 9.4% for the first four weeks compared with last year's FIFA 20, however, it's worth noting that this is a console transition year, with an updated version of the game set for December.

No.2 belonged to another EA game in the form of Star Wars: Squadrons, which narrowly beat out Activision's Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, which had to settle for third spot.

Despite launching right at the end of the month, the fourth biggest selling game of October across the regions was Watch Dogs: Legion from Ubisoft.

The next highest charting new game is Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit at No.18. The Nintendo Switch game was only available in a box as it requires a remote control kart to play. Meanwhile, the new Dark Pictures game, Little Hope, just misses out on the Top 20 at No.22. The game was released right at the end of the month in time for Halloween.

[...]

In terms of games hardware, just under 750,000 games consoles were sold across the EMEAA region. That is a drop on the 795,000 consoles sold during October 2019, although that's due to a significant drop in performance for PS4 and Xbox One - which is to be expected with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series S/X in November.

Unsurprisingly, Nintendo Switch remains the dominant platform by quite some margin. Switch console sales are up by almost 77% in October 2020 compared with the same period last year.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is PS5's biggest launch game as Call of Duty grabs No.1 | UK Boxed Charts

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War may have missed out on the top spot in its debut week, but it made up for it in week t…

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War may have missed out on the top spot in its debut week, but it made up for it in week two. The Activision shooter claims No.1 in the latest UK boxed charts, despite a 27% drop in sales week-on-week.

[...]

No.2 in the boxed charts is FIFA 21. The football game has been discounted as part of early Black Friday sales, and as a result it surged 121% in sales week-on-week.

Down in third place is the PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game was one of the key launch titles for PlayStation 5, which also launched last week. We don't have the console hardware sales available, but retailers told us last week that they expect PS5 to be one of the biggest console launches in UK history.

[...]

All of this means that Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla loses its No.1 spot and falls all the way to No.4 after a 70% drop in sales week-on-week. The game was a massive hit last week, with physical sales double that of its predecessor (Assassin's Creed Odyssey), and digital sales were up more than 200%.

In terms of new releases, there are a couple of new games in the charts this week. The highest charting title is Fortnite: The Last Laugh Bundle. This bundle includes in-game currency for Fortnite, alongside costumes and more extras inspired by Batman villains (including The Joker). The bundle sold best on Xbox (which combines Xbox One and the Xbox Series machines) representing 32% of sales. Nintendo Switch accounted for 30% of sales, PS4 accounted for 29% and PS5 9%.

At No.6 is the new Nintendo Switch game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The game has been heavily promoted as a prequel to the hit Zelda game, Breath of the Wild, so it's no surprise to see sales significantly up over the previous Hyrule Warriors Switch title (launch sales are nearly 324% bigger). However, it's not quite at the level of traditional Zelda games. Compared with last year's The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening remake, launch sales are 43% lower. Hyrule Warriors gameplay is based on the Japanese action series Dynasty Warriors, which doesn't sell in huge numbers in the UK. Once again, digital data is not available from Nintendo.

[...]

Nintendo Switch boxed game sales last week are up 52% week-on-week.

To complete our Top Ten analysis, Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion is at No.7, rising three places after a 149% jump in sales. Like with FIFA 21, this was due to early Black Friday discounting.

Other big Black Friday risers include Marvel Avengers at No.12 (sales up 234%), Star Wars Squadrons at No.14 (sales up 178%) Spyro Reignited Trilogy at No.21 (sales up 276%), Fallout 76 at No.31 (sales up 248%) and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled at No. 33 (up 123%).

Elsewhere, the Ultimate edition of Mortal Kombat 11 debuts at No.30, thanks primarily to the PS5 edition (66% of sales) followed by PS4 (15%), Xbox (14%) and then Switch (5%). Last week's new dancing game - Just Dance 2021 - drops from No.11 to No.15, but the game continues to perform very well, with sales down just 1% over the previous week. In fact, there are two Just Dance games in the Top 20, with last year's game at No.20. The older title performed well thanks to a Nintendo Switch bundle available at Amazon.

Finally, Codemasters' Dirt 5 has broken back into the charts at No.28. The racing game managed No.38 in its first week, but failed to chart in its second. It achieves its highest position so far thanks to the launch of the PS5 version, which accounted for 72% of the game's sales this week.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was the real No.1 last week | UK Digital Charts

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had a huge first week as a digital download in the UK.Download launch sales are up alm…

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War had a huge first week as a digital download in the UK.

Download launch sales are up almost 39% compared with last year's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release, according to the latest GSD download report.

[...]

Despite the digital success, when combining digital and physical together, the new Call of Duty's sales are still down over 16% compared with last year's entry. It's worth remembering, of course, that a free-to-play Call of Duty battle royale game was released earlier this year, and it continues to be a big success, which may have impacted sales. In addition, PC data isn't included.

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla is one of just a few new games that have been released in recent months that sold better as a physical release than a digital one. Even so, digital download sales for Valhalla are more than 200% higher than the last game in the franchise, 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey. In fact, the first week digital download sales alone for Valhalla are more than what digital and physical did combined for Odyssey. The Ubisoft game has been a phenomenal success, and its position as one of the main Xbox Series X/S launch title appears to have paid off.

In fact, because of the launch of the new Xbox consoles, both Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War were downloaded most on Microsoft's consoles over PlayStation 4, which is not something we would see in a typical week considering the higher PS4 install base in the UK. 55% of Call of Duty's download sales were on Xbox, while almost 58% of Assassin's Creed's digital sales were on Microsoft's machines.

One notable difference in the digital charts vs the physical charts is the absence of PS5 games. The PlayStation 5 has only just launched in the UK, and although PS5 physical games were available to buy last week, they were obviously unavailable to download. Even so, Spider-Man: Miles Morales was still the No.3 game in the digital download charts due to the PS4 version of the game. This version of the game narrowly sold more as a download than it did as a boxed release.

now that mpl90 posts these threads in such a timely manner, it'd be really good if we could just have all the discussion here and not have a separate thread for uk sales.

Spider Man best selling exclusive is expected, Hyrule Warriors is still a Warriors game, so it won't do mainline Zelda numbers.

How.

New system shipments must be that low then, or Switch is that big of a monster (which we already knew) even in one of its weakest markets.
I mean, even not taking into account November, 21 months in a row is a very long streak. So I would side with the Switch selling bonkers, I think shipments will be big in the UK for Sony/MS.

Week 47, 2020

Assassin's Creed Valhalla: 25% of sales on PS5
Spider-Man: Miles Morales: 60% of sales on PS5
Watch Dogs: Legion: 42% of sales on PS5

Demon's Souls -51%
Sackboy -49%

That's really interesting info, thanks!

Do we know how much Spidey sold in 2018 in its first two weeks? Miles Morales sold 57% less so far in the same timeframe

Some people are just sad lol. The point of making that comparison is to show how strong Switch sales have been, not trying to diminish the others...

Pretty impressive SW splits for PS5 considering how big the PS4 userbase is (not sure how digital would change things but i'd imagine the PS5 would have as high if not higher digital ratio). Unsure how that compares to previous cross gen games.

where does the idea that UK is a weak market for switch come from? some people still think nintendo only does well in US and japan, but that's not the case. just look at any sales chart from uk, germany, france, etc.

Apparently the PS5 is on track to be the biggest launch ever, so I would expect that to be the case in the UK as well unless we were undershipped for some reason.

Switch just seems to be the perfect 2020 console, even without big games at the end of this year.

Relatively speaking, it is the weakest of the main markets for Nintendo.

However, they turned around things pretty spectacularly coming from the WiiU/3DS generation and are selling very well here now (even if PlayStation is stronger).

For instance, there were several big Nintendo games that opened better in Spain last year than in the UK depsite the significant gap between both markets.

that's true, but it really doesn't feel like an underdog platform there when it's been the best selling console for 21 months and the software top 10 is often 50% switch exclusives.

I must admit, when he said this the 1st time I actually thought surely with limited PS5 stock and Switch having a full month including Black Friday boost, Switch still has a good chance of being no.1 in November. If PS5 and XBSX stock was readily available then it wouldn't stand a chance in launch month, but stock is limited with no sign of any more

Both Aldi and Tesco have leaked the regular Switch is going to be £229.99 on Friday, if the stock is there its going to do insane

Did Dring follow up on his comment about PS5 having the biggest launch in the UK? He mentioned it as a possibility a day or two ago, but I don't find a reference to it in the article.

His comment about Switch taking first place for the month of November seems crazy at first glance, but I would imagine that the Switch would always have been poised to sell a lot in November with bundles, and he probably does not have a good idea about PS5 restocks. Do we have any numbers about how many units Switch sold last November?

Wait wait wait, so if we take Dring's speculation at face value, PS5 should do well above 250k for the month (PS4 launch week was 250k). The above says Switch did 90k in 3 weeks in November 2019 (including the Pokémon launch). Now it's challenging PS5 at well over 250k for the whole month? That would suggest some huge growth if I'm not mistaken.

Why do people keep saying this when it is clearly not the case?

Is this a meme I'm not aware of?

Edit: I see someone else has suggested the same thing above. Weak really isn't the right word even with context of market comparisons - IMO.

It's because UK is one of the markets that had seen the smallest growth for Switch out of the major markets. Whereas in many other markets the Switch is challenging or surpassing the Wii, in the UK it is (or was until COVID, who knows after that) tracking behind it. The 3DS also was kinda weak compared to other European markets. It's not like it's doing abysmal, it's just lagging the growth in other markets by a factor. Calling it the weakest probably oversells this difference a bit, though

Also these publishers trying to sell games for 80€ (94 USD lol) better make some bloody good games because almost all of the sub 75 metascore games are going to flop hard in Europe if they cost 80€.

If the stock is available, you could easily see that 77% for a quiet October go much higher during Black Friday, especially with the leaked £229.99 price point

Man, I'm out of the loop on the UK. Where was the 230 pound price point leaked?

But yeah, you're probably right: a 100% growth might not be surprising, especially since the UK went back into lockdown. However, we could be looking at 150% or so growth, which remains really incredible.

Europe and UK just shrugged off Hyrule Warriors and Godfall so hard lol
the one time my actions as a Nintendo fan are matched by the market, trully remarkable.

Isn't the UK one of the strongest Xbox markets? With Sony prioritizing for shippment the markets where Xbox is strongest the eventuality of Switch outselling PS5 this November is just a Nintendo feat, if somebody argues otherwise let's see how many PS5 are sold in Italy or France, I'm positive the shipment will be lower than 250k. Still I think the PS5 will come out on top in the UK, the Switch just needs a perfect storm.
