Europe + ANZ
Top 5 Retail + Download for Week 49, 2020

bnCEs6W.png

November 2020

2.35 million games consoles were sold across Europe and Australia during November 2020, the latest GSD market data has revealed.

That's a 32% increase over November 2019. In terms of revenue, games consoles - which includes the newly released PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S - generated €830 million, which is up 83.5% over last year.

Of course, the new PlayStation and Xbox machines drove that growth, but it was Nintendo Switch that held on to its position as the No.1 games console across all the markets combined. Switch console sales were actually down marginally last month compared with the year before (down 2.2%). Last November saw the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield on Switch, whereas this November there wasn't an equivalent-sized game launch.

It must be noted that the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles completely sold out across all markets, and will have sold even better if more stock had been available.

The biggest market for console sales last month was the UK, followed by France.

[...]

In terms of the software market, across physical and digital, 25.2 million games were sold, which is up 14.7% over last November.

The digital market was the reason for that growth, with download sales growing by almost 41% over November last year. The physical market dropped slightly by 2.9% year-on-year.

[...]

The biggest market for overall game sales in November was the UK, which was up 31.9% over last year, followed by Germany (up 23.5%) and then France (down 0.5%). In terms of just digital sales, there were European markets that posted some significant year-on-year growth figures. Italy's download market was up almost 90% over November 2019, France's digital market is up over 85%, while UK is up 78%. The digital download market has been accelerated this year due to restrictions at physical retail caused by COVID-19.

The biggest publisher of the month was Ubisoft, driven by the new releases of Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Ubisoft was the No.1 digital publisher, while Nintendo was the No.1 physical publisher.

In terms of consoles, PS4 games had the biggest share of the market (digital and physical combined). Switch was the biggest in terms of pure physical sales, and it's important to note that Nintendo's digital sales are missing from the data.

PS4 digital game sales rose 40.8% year-on-year, but physical game sales are down 13.3%. Switch physical game sales are down 7.4%, and that's partially due to the absence of that big Pokemon-sized release.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla takes Christmas No.1 as Cyberpunk 2077 falls to third | UK Boxed Charts

It was a close race for Christmas No.1 this year, with Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Valhalla emerging as the No.1 physica…

It's the first time Assassin's Creed has claimed the Christmas No.1 position (and indeed, the first time for Ubisoft), and only the third time a non-FIFA or Call of Duty game has topped the boxed charts in 15 years (source: GfK Entertainment).

The game shot up in sales 66% due to some price discounting ahead of Christmas. The game beat out Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which was in second place after managing to sell as many copies this past week as it did the week before. It is the first time the Black Ops sub-series has not managed to claim Christmas No.1.

The big No.1 of last week was Cyberpunk 2077, and the RPG dropped 80% in sales this week and falls to No.3. The game has received some extremely negative press in recent days due to its poor technical performance on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, it's worth noting that an 80% drop in sales is not hugely unusual for a game such as this. Indeed, other games that secured big pre-orders, like The Last of Us: Part Two in the summer, and Assassin's Creed Valhalla in November, both dropped by 80% and 70% respectively in their second week.

[...]

Elsewhere, there were a number of last minute spikes in sales across the charts, partially due to price discounting. Spider-Man: Miles Morales climbs to No.6 after a 45% sales rise, Ring Fit Adventure returns to the Top Ten at No.9 after an 155% sales jump and Super Mario 3D All-Stars holds tenth spot with a 44% sales increase. Outside of the Top Ten, Immortals: Fenyx Rising jumps to No.12 thanks to an 107% sales increase, Watch Dogs Legion is at No.14 due to a 98% sales spike, and Carnival Games returns at No.35 with a 499% sales surge. There were deals on PS4 games, too, which meant that The Last of Us: Part Two is back at No.30 with a 374|% sales spike, and Ghost of Tsushima reaches No.34 after sales rose 208%.

Digital Black Friday sales jump almost 50% over 2019 l UK Download Charts

The number of games downloaded over Black Friday jumped by nearly 50% over the same period in 2019, the latest GSD data shows.

It's in contrast to the 20% drop in physical game sales over the Black Friday week. Overall (boxed and digital combined) 1.85 million games were sold over the popular sales period, which is down by under 1.5% compared with the same timeframe last year.

Although Black Friday certainly had an impact on the increase in games sales, the big winner was actually Football Manager 2021, which ended the week as the best-selling digital game. The Sega and Sports Interactive title was released last week, and combined physical/digital sales has the game up 2.5% over the launch of the previous game in the series.

Otherwise, the chart is a conventional one. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War slips to No.2 after a 58% drop in sales week-on-week, FIFA 21 is just behind at No.3 with a 31.1% sales increase, while GTA 5 re-enters the Top Five at No.4 after a 64% jump in sales week-on-week. Assassin Creed Valhalla takes a fall to No.5 due to a 44% drop in sales, but it's otherwise a good week for the Assassin's brand, with Assassin's Creed Odyssey at No.7 after a 184% sales jump, and Assassin's Creed Origins at No.15 following a 192% increase in weekly sales.

Yep, I think the same.

Also, nothing makes me more happy than to see 'perfect pandemic games' like Just Dance (and of course Ring Fit Adventure) absolutely killing it this year!

In terms of launch aligned sales, Just Dance 2020 sold twice as many units at UK retail as Just Dance 2019 in the first 6 weeks. Unfortunately, I don't know how much JD2020 sold in that sixth week, but it sold 55.000 units in its first 5 weeks on the market (week 45-49, 2019). Now Just Dance 2021 has sold 2.4x that number in its first 5 weeks, which means it's probably selling something like 5x faster than Just Dance 2019.

and there's no digital to save it and how many returns?

Cyberpunk 2077 digital share is >70% and it's still on GOG, Steam, EGS and Xbox.

A drop like this for the game with the most pre-orders ever and with the biggest launch of the year (behind FIFA) is pretty normal, even TLOU 2 dropped like that in 2nd week.

If anything, physical sales are going inevitably to be "low" because the digital share is really high and we are not getting them because CDPR is handling digital distribuition.

After selling 13 million copies ww they don't need a "saving" lol

Very curious to see RingFit sales from Nintendo report in February... They should be pretty high as it is performing well on a worldwide scale.

I noticed that the Spanish November chart AEVI published is a total mess, so here it is the GfK retail chart for the same period, which is way more accurate:

Do you have access to numbers or why is the AEVI top a mess? And can you explain how can this discrepancies happen?

There are also some issues with the Gfk charts.
It separates SKUs (FIFA 21 Champions Ed. and AC Valhalla Gold Ed. appear separated from their Standard editions), they should mention Standard Edition to make the lists clearer.
Charts also contain digital editions of some games, AC Valhalla, Mafia Trilogy. So, they must include FIFA 21 digital if they want those Top 10 to look correct.
Then, they have Xbox One chart, but it is not possible to separate its SW sales from Xbox Series, because some games have a common box for both generations.

Valhalla deserves the success. Bought the Gold Edition on Ubisoft Connect on PC with the 20% off plus 21% off coupon and the game is blowing my mind at regular intervals, it's so fucking good.
