PC Gamers: Which hardware component(s) are you upgrading to get ready for next gen?

Intrigued to know what components others will be upgrading ready for next gen?

My current set up is a i9-9900k with 2080 Ti and a 3.5gb/s NVMe SSD. So really I'm already set for next-gen.. but as always I want more.

Sure, the 2080Ti is incredible and would serve me well for a good few years, especially given its DirectX12 Ultimate support and DLSS.. but I've planned to get a 3080Ti when it launches. I won't be able to resist, for the HDMI 2.1 output in particular.

As for the SSD though, it's already faster than what XSX is offering, but slower than PS5. To match PS5 SSD speeds I need to upgrade to PCIE4.0, but currently that would involve switching to AMD as Intel isn't currently offering a PCIE4.0 option. Not in a rush for this upgrade though and will likely wait until 2021/22 and upgrade the motherboard/CPU/SSD at that point.

I'm just waiting now for gpu. I upgraded to 3900X and X570 a few months ago. Just waiting for these newer cards now. My 1080 struggles a little at 1440p.

Worst time to buy is right when new consoles hit.

I'm waiting a year or two after for PC GPUs to get a solid bump at a decent price point (like the RX480/GTX1060). The practical SSD requirements for gaming will probably be known by then. I roll AMD so I'm all set with PCIE4 and a potential upgrade path up to 16 cores.

Literally everything lol. DDR3 RAM at 1600, an i5-4670 and a 1060 GTX means everything must be changed for next gen.

Not to mention that I gotta get a particularly fast SSD (which shouldn't be an issue cause they'll be more standard by the time I want to upgrade).

I went up to a 2070 Super and i5-9600K last week and I'm pretty stoked with how it's running things. It's not exactly groundbreaking, but I don't game at above 1080 right now. 1440p monitors are a bit much at this exact moment (and I'm likely not going to touch 4K in general). I was at a 1660/i5-3700K for a loooooong time. All I really want to upgrade now is my SSD.

what i had a year ago: 6700K, 16GB RAM, GTX 1070, 1TB SATA3 SSD, 1440p 60hz monitor
i currently have: 9900K, 32GB RAM, RTX 2080, 2TB NVMe SSD, 1440p 144hz monitor

so as you can see i've upgraded everything. my 2080 is doing a great job but it is next to be replaced by a 3080 Ti whenever that comes out.

haha nice. I have the same setup. I'll probably upgrade in a few years. I wanted to be ready for CyberPunk and I feel like I am now.

- PCIe 5.0 has already passed certification and is ready to go as a standard whenever, maybe late 2021 you'll start to see 'em

Rest of the pieces are good enough that a replacement has little to no value. At most I might get a better SSD down the line when prices normalize a bit

The next Ryzen is on a new architecture, expecting a fairly decent jump ( 15-20% ).

But I'm interested if they will include any of those dedicated hardware to speed up the SSDs (Just like in the consoles).

this years AMD will be just an updated 7nm process called Zen 3.

intel are still to release their 10th gen desktop cpus like the i7-10700K (8/16 cores) or the i9-10900K (10/12 cores) which are still based on 14nm.

next year is likely to be more exciting with "Zen 4" which i think will bring AMD to the 5nm process. Intel might have something too on the 7nm process when they finally ditch their Lake series and move to Rapids series.

2021 is looking to be the year we get DDR5 + PCIE5.0 but it might not exactly be on the consumer end. could possibly be 2022 before it trickles down.

Getting a 3080 Ti whenever it releases. Last month I upgraded everything except my current 2080, so i'll be ready once Ampere launches.

Currently running: i9 9900KS, 2080, 32GB ram, NVMe and sata SSDs. Once I replace the card I see this build lasting most of next gen...but i'll probably start upgrading around the mid point.

There has to be an appreciably faster CPU to drop for me to get rid of my 9900k/mobo. I don't think this going to be a bottleneck with new consoles for a while since this thing is still smoking the shit out of Zen 2s.

I don't know if I want to hop into the 1st new wave of post-console GPUs or wait until the second wave since i'm on a 2080ti. The actual timetable will depend on how comfortable my 2080ti is into the next generation.

For NVMEs, I'm just waiting for the price to dip down a bit on the non-QLC stuff, which has been frustrating since SSD prices have crept back up since late last year.

No idea, I'll wait and see what the recommended requirements are for ports some time into next gen. Assuming I even want any of them in the first place, I don't see the need in upgrading a system if there's not enough new games I want that actually require it.

I also plan to stick to playing in 1080p for the foreseeable future so that could hold down the level of requirements I need anyway.

intel is skipping PCIE 4.0 and going straight to 5.0.

4.0 was just rushed out by AMD to basically say "ours is better and faster!". AMD will be on 5.0 around the same time as Intel. 4.0 is just a stop gap.

i think it'll be 2021 for 5.0. AMD is ditching AM4 after this year and probably will have their new chipset based on DDR5 + PCIE 5.0. Intel look to be releasing 5.0 in 2021 too.

Mine is old but still getting it done. i7-4790k. I'm sometimes CPU limited these days but I can still play everything at 60-180fps so I'm not desperate.

Don't really see the point in upgrading as I'll switch to consoles for a few years. Then depending on what mid-range systems come out (or we've had a few years where games are STILL running at 30fps) then I'll just buy a whole new PC and give my current one to nephew.

I made a new Ryzen build over the holidays with parts I bought on Black Friday. 3700x, 16 GB RAM, GTX 1660ti and a SATA 2TB SSD.

I will probably upgrade to a 3060 or AMD equivalent towards the end of 2021, or maybe 2022. But I'm pretty sure I'm good for 1080p High/Ultra settings for now.
