They're back compat. So it'll work on a PCIE3.0 mobo but they'll be limited by PCIE3.0 bandwidth.

PC Gamers: Which hardware component(s) are you upgrading to get ready for next gen?

I'm running an oc'd 8700k and a 1070. I think I'll pick up a 3070 whenever that releases as long as it's not absurdly expensive.
After that I won't be upgrading anything else until another 2 or 3 years. By that point I'll do a near full rebuild and keep the 3070 going for awhile.

PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD for sure. To get as close to PS4 speeds as possible. Currently running a 5700XT, will probably hang with it, unless whatever AMD offers is far superior, and the price is right.
Biding my time for awhile to see how hardware shakes out the next couple years. Guessing it'll be time for a completely new build by then.
Will get a new PC by the end of the year.

mixture since I play with some systems that can already hang with nex gen or do more.
At this point anything less than a 3900 ryzen or less wont due including intel's, so my upgrades are focused there till I know how ssd and gpus will perform in relation to new consoles. I'm not gimping myself this next gen and anyonewith 20 threads or more using affinity will have a lot better performance than the consoles can give em if they get such a cpu.
Whatever next gpus I buy next which will be two will be 450$ with what I have saved.
I'm going to expand in to ssd more but keep old storage for longevity.

I'm looking forward to the tail end of 2021 / beginning of 2022 to upgrade. That's when I feel next gen will actually start. You'll have NVDA with their Hopper Multi Chip Module GPUs (final nail in the coffin for consumer SLI/NVLINK), DDR5 will be consumer ready, PCIe 5.0 could already be a thing (not really counting on this), new SSD controllers with insane speeds (Q32020 will have SSDs capable of 7.2GBps read/5.3GBps write).
I usually only upgrade my PC one to two years after a new or every 5 years. Whichever comes first. I do update laptops a little more often. But It's almost like I've got my own little release cycle to look forward to. I like that feeling of having huge performance gains. It's going to feel good going from a Titan Xp to whatever Hopper's (4000 series) flagship card will be. CPU core count will be beyond insane by then as well. MCM technology has already drastically changed the CPU market. I can't wait to see what it does for the GPU market.

Considering games are gonna be bottlenecked by cross gen, and likely next gen isn't even coming out anytime soon due to the pandemic... i expect i'll be more than fine for a good 2 more years. Could be wrong, in that case i'm ready for next gen intel/nvidia

I've got a 9700K with an RTX 2070. But I play at 1080p so I should be good for 2-3 years. I don't mind needing to turn some settings down and turning RTX off if it means I can push my upgrade path out longer.
I'm upgrading my GPU and CPU when the 3080ti arrives but it's mostly so I can have amazing VR performance. VR future is what really excites me. And I want to run Hunt Showdown and PUBG at 144fps with supersampling. But stuff like Halo Infinite, Senhua and whatever Sony brings to PC looking amazing while running above 100 fps is a nice bonus too.
Everything. Buying a XSX this year and then I'm going to rebuild my entire PC next year sometime and then use my current PC (2700X 1080Ti) as a VR exclusive station.
I'll probably get a new GPU, but I'd really rather wait for the generation of GPUs that follow the 40XX series.
Planning to upgrade my 2080 Super to a 3080 or 3080 ti depending on price.

The only parts in my system that will maybe need an upgrade in the next little while are my 1080ti, and the SATA SSD I use for games. But I feel like the 1080ti should last me until at least the 4000 series GPU's, and I can't see NVME becoming requirement for PC games in the short/medium term either so I'm probably fine.
Too early to say. Have to see how next gen games going to perform. Then see where the bottleneck is and upgrade accordingly to prices, fps and visual target.

I'd reccomend upgrading your monitor. A 1660ti will get you incredibly solid performance at 1440p (60+ fps), and should even let you play at 4k 30-40fps if you prefer visuals over framerate.
Otherwise, great rig. I might have skimmed a bit off the CPU and SSD and put it into the GPU, but your PC will be very futureproof, only needing GPU upgrades over the next 5+ years.
I have a Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1tb and a Samsung 970 evo 1tb. What prices are we expecting for a 2tb Samsung 980? I just don't see games really benefiting from 980 speeds. But i guess we will just have to wait and see.

Right now I have an i5-6600k, RX480 and 16GB ram and just a 512GB Sata SSD.
All I can say is that I really regret not getting the i7 when I built my computer, but I was a broke high school student that bought my GPU a year later.
But because I can't reliably or cheaply buy a new CPU, I think I will just be better off biting the bullet and building a whole new PC in a couple years with whatever processor is better and a strong GPU (since I'm at 1080p still, I will likely stay with an upper mid level gpu)
Definitely gonna go for at least 12 cores though if I can afford it
