PC Gamers: Which hardware component(s) are you upgrading to get ready for next gen?

I have an i9 9900k, so I guess I'll just replace my 1080ti in 2 years in and buy a fast NVME SSD.
3600/2070 Super owner here. I will probably skip a gen of video card, and grab whatever the equivalent of a 5070 is and the last gen of Ryzen that my MoBo supports. I already have an NVME M.2 drive, but I'll upgrade for a higher capacity drive when the time comes. With so many of the launch titles being cross-get I think waiting a year is probably the right play.
Your i7 6700k will be a bottleneck for next gen games due to being a quad core. 8 core cpus are going to be the base for next gen games.
I'm waiting and going to build an entire new PC. My current build is still going strong (4790k, 980ti) and handles even the most demanding games still at 1440p, medium to ultra settings and keeps frame rates around or above 60FPS.
But I've been saving for a while, I was going to build this month and get everything new except the GPU and wait for the next generation. But I've decided to wait until the next CPUs and GPUs are launched as I'm happy at the moment.
I currently have £1,400 ($1,700) saved up, so I'll probably top that up to £2,000 ($2,400) and build a beast to last me 5+ years like my current build has. (thinking 10700k and a 3080ti or whatever they end up calling them)

I work as a neuroscience researcher and my lab purchased the RTX 2080 TI for me to do work from home. I need to capture, post-process, and then analyze files that range from 10 to 150 GB, typically, the file is essentially 500-1000 UHD TIFF's combined, permitting a third dimension (depth or time). Even the simple processing like aligning the image takes a while on my rig despite nothing being maxed out, granted it's much better than my previous one (MSI GT75VR 7RF Titan Pro). I can't figure out why it can take 20-30 minutes to complete things like alignment yet the hardware is only ~50-60% utilized. I bought the GEN4 thinking the rate-limiting step was the SSD speeds. But, I digress - I don't know anyone that is knowledgeable about this stuff and this has been nagging me for several years with countless hours troubleshooting.
I have a Ryzen r5 3600 with 16 GB DDR 3200 and a RTX 2060. I'm not upgrading until i see what kind of performance i can get out my rig.
Looking into getting +16 GB of RAM by now, and we'll see if i have to get a NVME SSD later. I have one exclusively for Windows and small games but that's it (They're too expensive for my pocket)

Given that parts right now on the high end aren't drastically above (Or not even reaching new console potential in the case of SSDs), and still come at a high premium, now seems like a terrible time to be upgrading a PC.
I'll wait a year and see where things are at. Seems like it's going to be a more or less full PC upgrade when the time comes with needing a new motherboard for higher quality SSDs.

I just built with a 3700x, 32 gigs 3200, and a 2080S. I have one NVMe for Windows and apps but I'm waiting for higher speed PCIE 4 nvmes to come out so I can match whatever the consoles will need.
like everyone else, waiting for ampere to upgrade my GPU. I'm going to wait to upgrade my SSD to see how developers handle the new console tech.
Unless the RTX3060 does some heavy lifting, my 1080 is staying.

I already did a new build with a new motherboard with a 3700x CPU, faster RAM and a new NVME SSD but kept my GTX 1080 and I plan to keep it like this for the next couple years. Then in 2022 or 2023 I will upgrade GPU to be much better than the new consoles. Also probably finally get a new monitor or tv at that point.

It is tempting to upgrade the CPU, but at this point I would need a new cooler and new mobo. At this point I prefer to donate my PC to my university and start from scratch (I would keep the case and the PSU) when DDR5 arrives.

This is the sweet spot and should be the standard next-gen (ultrawide too).
Just save for now until DDR5 or at least until once you start getting bottlenecked by your CPU. You're best of building an entirely new rig if you're upgrading the CPU.
Waiting to see, but I think I'll need to upgrade my power supply, GPU, and add an SSD at minimum. As far as I can see my CPU shouldn't be a big issue but if it will be, may as well just build a new rig altogether at that point. Tempted to do that anyway, this has lasted about 8 years so definitely got my money's worth.

I lucked out with the SSD, I had some birthday gift cards for BestBuy, and the SSD was the only component with a good deal.
The GPU was an intermediate upgrade. I would've stuck with my 1060 for a few more years, but it was the 3GB version, and that just wasn't cutting it anymore, so I went for a cheaper refresh, before getting something that's capable of ray-tracing once the tech's matured somewhat.
And yeah, my screen's probably gonna be the next thing to go. But I've had this 23 inch Acer since Holiday 2011 when I did my first build, and it's still going strong, so I don't see much point in refreshing it yet, haha
New Mother Board, new CPU and GPU, basically. But I don't know when and I can't decide if I should go with Intel or AMD
Man, I'd pretty much need an entirely new PC at this rate. I had a great run with my build and don't regret it, but will probably just get a XSX and look into upgrading the PC a few years down the road when components are dramatically ahead of the consoles. I almost sold the PC but the deal fell through, so now I might just keep it to play AOE2DE and older games.
I expect to upgrade from a GTX 1080 to a 3080 or 3080 Ti later this year, depending on exactly what Nvidia does. I'll probably try and make do with the rest of my system (6700K, SATA SSD) for another year or two after that before upgrading everything else, but that'll depend on what gets released when and how exactly my system performs with new games.
I built a new system just a few months ago but it's rather middling (Ryzen 5 3600, GTX 1660 Ti), fine for anything I want to play now but likely won't be good enough for next-gen games (I didn't build it for that.) I could perhaps get away with a CPU and GPU upgrade but I'm in no rush. I'm still going to be catching up on this generation's games for a while.
Seems like AMD is way ahead of the game right now. Judging by these rumors. we probably won't see anything from them until the fall. :/
Oh, no rush for me. I will wait 1 or 2 years after the next gen arrive like I did this gen. My I3 4ª and than 8ª + 1060 did wonders for me

My system pauses at boot for Ram training for 20-30 seconds (based on my research to this point) which wasn't the case in the first year or so I had it. Other than that, I've been pretty happy with my system.

Tbh, I don't see myself upgrading for a handful of years. I've been playing a lot of games at 4k, but I really don't mind playing at 1080p if I have to. The only thing that could force me is VR games that require more juice. However, I'm hoping the next version of the Quest will not require me to.

I hope you are right but i sincerely doubt it. Nowadays games are still having i3 and very old i5 2700k as minimum requirements. Those are >7 year old CPUs. I'd be surprised if games releasing this year or the next will have as minimum requirement an 8 Core CPU.
I'd love to see games such as warhammer 3 having more shit in the screen as well as having RTX.
Just GPU for me when the new Nvidia cards come out, my RTX 2060 will serve me well until then. I just upgraded my aging 4790k to a Ryzen 3700x a couple months ago so I am almost set for a while...
That's how weak the jaquar cpus were in Xbox On and PS4, but both the the XSX and PS5 are basically going to have Ryzen 3700x cpus in them this time around so the baseline is going to be much higher. Going to be interesting to see how year 1 games perform.
None. If a game comes out that I want to play and my PC's not up to it, then I'll upgrade what's needed.
