I sometimes go on shady sites but maybe I can avoid it. I just worry with random pop upsNo - Windows defender is built in and more than sufficient for protection.

The built in windows security features should protect your pc for the most part.
Don't click shady links, make sure you are aware what you are running when you run/install something.
Don't open attachments/click links in emails if you don't know what exactly it is.
