As we know, the next-gen consoles will have 8-core/16 thread Ryzen 3xxx-derived CPUs, I'm guessing with a fixed maximum clock of at least 3.2 or 3.6GHz. A huge improvement over the Jaguar cores in the current gen consoles which aren't even on par with midrange smartphone CPUs for a few years now. And on the PC side a lot of people are using processors with 6 or less cores and may not wish to upgrade for the next 3-5 years or longer (for example Core i5-8400, Ryzen 1600 and 2600, etc). Now of course devs can't suddenly demand 8-core CPUs as the minimum even by 2021 or 2022 for multiplat games, so that means at least initially the powerful new processors may not be fully tapped. Unless perhaps they put in high FPS 120Hz modes in next-gen games, then you can get away with weaker PC processors for 60-90fps gameplay with a capable GPU

Old consoles don't evaporate when next-gen launches - we will get a lot Cross-Gen titles.
And a 6 core is not far away from probably 7 cores in the consoles (1 for the OS).

Tech on PC moves a lot faster and there will be new CPUs, up to 2 generations, every year. I don't think it will stay behind for too long.

Early next-gen consoles won't be making full use of the consoles themselves and many will be made with cross-gen in mind.

Nope that will not be the case idea of pc is you can scale up or down based on specs and that's all there is to it.
At least make a compelling arguement because this is pretty silly.

pc has options, many, even weak cpu/gpu combos can still play current gen games, you just got to find the right settings.

No game is going to immediately call on 16 threads at the start of next gen. And by time they do, gaming PC's with 6+ cores will be way more common. Besides, given that PC games tend to have more adjustable options in the in-game menus, if someone has some performance issues, they can knock down shadows.

We've seen it plenty times before that this won't happen. If you don't have the hardware the game just won't launch\warn you.

I think you're overestimating the CPU in the PS5/XB4.

Just because the hardware is in the same family doesn't mean it's clocked the same. Consoles need to cool themselves after all.
