There is different types of ghosting here, though. Ghosting in the interview process? Meh. Employers do this all the time.

Ghosting after you accept the job? Yeah, I can't endorse that myself. You don't need a two week notice of course lol. But just let them know you are not feeling the place. I've known people that have done that. They quit the first day because they just felt it was a bad fit.

its one thing to require a portfolio. its another to go through someone's social media account and make a judgement call. also, so what if she didn't wanna show, it was technically a lose-lose situation for her. call in sick or say she didn't wanna take the interview that day.

I agree, I think its low for a company to snoop at all once they are hired. If the work is done, they want a day off, they have the time. Why not? That aspect is bullshit.

But the world is more intertwined now and most of the time they are doing it simply to make sure you're not liability. I.E. Let's hire an employee who is posting a lot of trash online which is linked to their name... who is now linked to your company. And the trash could be racist, homophobic, sexist shit or posting porn to nothing but pictures of them drunk and naked. I think the employee has to cover their end too. Don't be stupid.

Corporations are made up of people, your coworkers. People like you. Imagine someone standing up for you. That's decency and integrity. People work at these places. That's who you hurt when you ghost.

You had me until "That's who you hurt when you ghost". Absolutely not, lol. Coworkers ain't your friends. Most of them won't hesitate to sell you out for a raise. You in corporate there's only one ideal that matters: your bottom line.

I don't advocate ghosting in terms of leaving a job without giving two weeks notice as you don't wanna burn bridges. ie hurting yourself down the line.

But some shitty retail job? All in the game yo. Or if the new job is only offered on the condition you start immediately? Might be worth the bridge burning. But limiting your advancement outta some feeling of obligation for people that don't give a damn about you? No way.

This is years of personal experience in corporate. I've been fucked over when I was younger and all wide eyed and full of naive notions like this.

OK that's a different context and I wouldn't advise doing that cause I don't care how big your industry or city is word can get around. It'll bite you in the ass.

Yeah well, working in retail, I've had tons of people ghost and it fucks everyone left. It hurts the little man, not corporate (at least not for years). Coworkers may not be my friends but I dont live my life by "the only people I dont fuck over are friends" conditions. I'm not sure how you can advocate that line of thinking and not think that will negatively effect the world if enough people live by your advice.

If enough people lived by that advice maybe corporations would be forced to do something about it. :)

Also if your bullshit line of thinking was real anyway any place that ghosts applicants would have their workers go on strike to make them stop do it. But they don't so you can't expect the same courtesy. If you don't give enough of a shit to do anything about it why should anyone else.

I've put in work retail too and that's par the course. You pay dirtshit wages and you expect someone to give a shit some guy they don't know will have a shitty day at work cause they found better work?

Management doesn't give a shit why should the little guy when they get a better job or can't take the bullshit?

Last time I quit a retail job no notice it was my boss giving me a lecture on why it'd be really hard to give me a .25c raise and an extra shift that that would bring me to full time so I could have medical benefits. "Oh you were late once last month when your car died".

Retail doesn't give a shit.

I just got hired at a place and I'm about to ghost them. I don't need the money to pay my bills, but I figured some extra spending money couldn't hurt (and I need to get out more and interact with people).

I worked at Target for years before becoming a full-time writer. The new job is basically the same thing. Unloading trucks and stocking shelves. Easy money.

I was driving home after accepting the job and getting my schedule and then it finally hit me. "What the hell are you doing?"

I won't be showing up tomorrow . . . or answering my phone 😂
