"Normies" don't buy video games in Japan. Those that you call normies would be called otaku there for that reason and it's why many people bought games in secret or never told to others until the last decades for fear of being judged. Being a otaku has nothing to do with "degenerate", it just means that you have a hobby be it anime, manga, games, idols, trains, TCG, guns, western culture or whatever that is.

Those games stereotyped sells less than 30k while games like Nier, Persona, Fire Emblem and others are above 400k which is a pretty big number.

Erm, you knows a lot of kids still play DQ right? kids mean age 9-12, a lot of women young to OL age queue and gather around in DQX and DQXI event, even granpa granma some play DQ, I met a lot of them. And it's not even as super normies as pokemon or shit that feature in Corocoro comic like Splatoon.

Nier Automata and Persona 5 also normies bait as hell because of design and style.

because anime fandom is full of trash. yeah, it's not all bad yadda yadda, but a lot of it is "which teenage girl would you prefer to fuck?". and that's not even getting into the whole nazi issue.

anime fandom needs to take the garbage out, tbh.
I don't say this as some kind of Persona defense force. I've played 10 hours of 5. Dungeon 1 is super long and I've been told other dungeons are even longer so I'm wondering if I want to commit to a 100 hour playthrough.

But when you bring up these exact same issues with the gaming community here and suddenly we hate gamers. But those same people have no issue dishing it out.

I mean, this thread is whatever, but this is just one of three topics today where are just really showing their asses on the subject and I'm like, who hurt you?

I can't even say Goku in a Smash thread without getting quoted 5 times. Doesn't stop me tho.

There are aspects of this game that can be fairly called out and criticized, but holy shit is the OP stretching and most of those agreeing with him and just patting themselves on the back for not liking "anime trash" as well.

Germany
When I was studying media (I'm from the UK), I'll always remember being told Brits are more sensitive to sex in their media, but forgive violence. While in Germany the opposite was true.

Not sure if that's still the case, but I thought it was interesting. I'm talking about classification (age ratings) here, not on a social level.

Pretty accurate. In the last decade or so Germany relaxed a lot when it comes to violence in media (especially games). Like for example Doom 2016 released 100% uncut here while in the early-mid 2000s stuff like for example Soldier of Fortune or Manhunt were either cut a lot (SoF) or outright banned (Manhunt). I would say sex/sexuallity is still far less of a problem, you'll see naked bodies on TV in the middle of the day and nobody cares.

So when people argue about if Hermione should of married Ron vs Harry, Bella should of married Jacob vs Edward, Katniss should of married Peeta vs Gale...

Is that problematic?

Well I'm not posting any more screenshots or videos on this forum as the last time I did that and tried to use state of the art blurring, I was permanently banned.

You can yourself go and look up Intimacy Mode of Senran Kagura and see why Sony might axe that. Literally slapping and molesting young characters. Some of the other lesser known games have had other young or young looking characters covered up.

If devs want to dip into straight up sex/pornographic depictions, they best keep it to 18+ if they don't want games continuing to come under scrutiny. Especially if they are wanting to operate in countries which are paying more attention to lewd sexualization of minors - https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/anime-fan-convicted-over-illegal-7958896

The same Senran Kagura which have this mode on Steam.. regardless, my argument was about SIE stupid regulation which only affect smaller developers since I still need to see a big one having to change their content in Japan.

While I agree that gameification of romance is and has always been a stupid and one dimensional thing, and waifu culture is super creepy, everything else you said was basically nonsense.

The characters are the characters, and you, the player, take on the role of actor and audience. Taken on its own, how exactly is there any kind of moral degeneracy in that? Would you say that audiences that watch movies in which there are teenage romances are doing something wrong? No, you wouldn't. So it's fine to be an audience for this. Would you say that a 20-something year old voice actor playing a teenage character who is in a relationship with another teenage character is morally corrupt? Of course you wouldn't. Even the interactive nature of the medium doesn't change any of this either. All that means is that on top of taking on an actor's role you're also taking on a director's role at the same time. Would you say John Green a bad person because he writes young adult books and literally creates teenage romance story lines from his own imagination? No.

Humans have been writing, directing, acting, and enjoying as audiences, a wide variety of different scenarios from a wide variety of perspectives, ages, etc. for our entire history. It's what we do. It's not somehow suddenly a bad thing because it's in video game form now where we take on multiple roles.

That's not to say Persona or any other series deserves to be praised for how it handles romance. Because yes, tying those things to stats and meters and such has always been a pathetic way to portray romance. But just "This teenage character I'm playing as can date other teenagers??? How horrible!" is ridiculous.

College life would bump up the age of the character by like 2 to 3 years.
It atlus wants it to expand to a western audience, it's a simple change that wouldn't change the gameplay side

I feel the closest compromise we'd realistically get would be something like ScruffyTurtles Adult Confidant AU comic where the cast is made up of high school seniors and some college freshmen.
DdLoxoDU0AA6b3z.jpg

Probably enough to make everyone over 18 though which would hopefully put more people at ease at least, but still keeps the high school setting.

This is a weird ass take. These games are made for teenagers. I was a teenager when I played Persona 3 and 4.

The shit with dating adults is sketchy and gross, but dating your classmates and other teenagers is fine, even if it's poorly written. You don't even have to date them at all either.

a game in which the main male protagonist is a vessel for the adult player

First of all you need to back up your claim that the game is, in fact, made for adults. That's completely untrue because they were making a game for the entire world to enjoy with a focus on young anime fans. I played Persona 3 when I was a teenager, at a time when I was a young anime fan. These games are coming of age stories. Teenage romance is a common trope and underlying element in all of them. The thing you're taking issue with isn't exclusive to Persona and simply reflective of real life and how teens act and interact. They date. They share awkward moments and sometimes have sexual tension. You were a teenager once, I imagine OP, certainly you can relate to this. To not portray that in a game about teenagers is to be disingenuous to the (actual) target demographic. Persona 5 is simply doing what any good coming of age story does, and keeps it real with the character writing.

You're assuming a lot about the audience being JUST straight adult men considering how many women and queer people of different age groups I know who played and loved the game. And that's people I know personally and from reading what others are saying around the internet. Not just here on ResetEra and other places online that adult gamers frequent. There's a disconnect between what YOU see as the player base, and what I have seen of the player base both online and off line. Consider I, an adult white guy, played the game on the grounds that I played these games and loved them when I was a teenager. I loved the gameplay mechanics and enjoyed the story. Getting Persona 5 was a no brainer considering how much I love the last two Persona games. The conclusion you're jumping to here is clearly based in your own personal worldly bias picked up from internet communities that you frequent without leaving your own personal comfort zone to see what others think about this game.

Not to whole sale dismiss everything you're saying because I am sure there are many adult men who do connect with the game this way. But the part where you're suggesting that it's within the context of being predatory to young women is sensationalist at best. People finding the character they connect with most and going down the games guided hallway of what it presents as her romance option and story path is no different than watching something like Friday Night Lights. Most the time with people who play and discuss the game, there's no genuine serious predatory feelings behind them picking who they think the best romance option is in the game. Because at the end of the day most people playing games enjoy the games' mechanics and story telling and leave if there. They say these silly anime community meme things because that's how they want to connect with the game because that's how they connect with other media they enjoy. That's the sort of culture the anime fandom has adopted and it's gone even further than just anime in 2018. The waifu joke some something, once upon at time, got picked apart and persecuted only to be won back and turned into a sort of joking meme within the wider anime fandom and community itself. It's no different than any other silly bit of self deprecating humor you find elsewhere on line. In short: it is what it is!

Generally that sort of talk tends to be tongue in cheek. Would you think me weird if I said Big Barda from DC comics was my waifu? No! You'd google her if you didn't know her and not really thinking much of it because it's not a serious comment nor does it affect my real world relationships with others. But you get the idea! It's a character I feel strongly about and connect with their emotional struggles within the stories they star in. It's jokey short hand.

And againI really want to hammer home here is this. The game isn't teaching people how to be predatory. Your argument would be a subject worth pursuing if it did have those aspects, but nothing about the game does that. It's just the same as watching a coming of age movie staring teenagers. You feel for everyone in the story, maybe the main boy or girl gets their crush at the end (and this being a video game this lets you choose who that is because we'd be discussing and pulling the game apart for NOT having this and not being true to the experience of being a teenager) Should we start getting onto adults who enjoy young adult media that often employ these tropes and enjoy shipping and pairing off characters in other media that have these types of stories? You know the demographic that tends to do that kind of thing, right? Young adult fiction is for teenagers. Women and queer folks ALSO latch onto this.... To me the idea that the game is exclusively made for men is just short sighted

Go to any local gaming or anime convention and you see a lot of teenagers cosplaying Persona. At least that's how it is where I live. Maybe do some digging around the fandom and see a large part of who it is really keeping the passion for this game running. I personally find a lot of it is queer teenagers looking for an outlet and place to connect with other like minded people.

Sure the fandom that hangs around ResetEra does tend to be the dudes pushing the waifu thing a bit, but that tends to be tongue in cheek at best as it is with most anime fans. Don't let this be a litmus for the entire games fanbase because you saw someone awkwardly defending their stance on a game with a minor aspect that sorta rubbed you the wrong way because you assumed it was made for you and only you - an adult man.

Also to those essentially subtweeting people with persona avatars suggesting they want to fuck the character in their avatars -- holy shit. Fucking excuse them for enjoying something you didn't! You are lashing out at people you don't even fucking know and more than likely would get along with in real life because we're all here on the same goddamned gaming forum and likely would be pretty chill and have a lot more in common than you're giving them credit for based on a 200x200 pixel avatar. Grow the fuck up and start acting your age, please.

Right, well. My dad ass dad rant is done, hopefully it gives the OP and folks agreeing with him some food for thought. I'm fucking out and plan on reporting all drive by posts responding to this and selectively responding to those wanting to argue in good faith with me because I'm not here to play fucking silly debate mind games when I'm here to have fun and talk about things I enjoy.

I think you guys have probably got the right approach in that sense (being more comfortable with sex in general). We've become desensitised to violence in our media.

Anyway, I won't take this thread off topic anymore, just wanted to pop in and make a comment. :)

Hermione married when she was an adult.

Twilight has been called out for being problematic before. It's pretty creepy

She ended up choosing Ron when they just turned 18. Like Harry literally turned 18 at the beginning of the book.

The point is why is it disgusting to say that Makoto is a better pick for the MC than Futaba but doing the same for other media is okay?

An otaku is being an obsessive fan in anything, and in Japan you are consider one in videogames if you still play them after high school. Still, I doubt they make the bulk of sales for Pokemon, and other Nintendo games.

That's up to Steam as a platform holder. As I said what I find more amusing is knowing it's 20/30+ year old men getting their jimmies rustled they can't slap the breasts of 16~17 year olds on PS4 (or apparently 15 as below).

yteE8jo.png

Bashou (芭蕉) is a playable character from the Senran Kagura video game series.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aINOfPJZ6Mw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4tXLk_mIXM

Okay, mods above NSFW video of Senran is not embedded, so please no banning. Remove if you wish, but it's there to show off intimacy mode with a 15-year-old.

Let everyone know why Sony is maybe starting to get a little skittish around this shit outside of Japan.

You call it funny, I call it sick and disturbing.

Funny as in, oh the irony of men these ages telling everyone "this is made for teenagers!".

The self taken survey in the OP is the only thing we have to go off of and it shows that the primary people buying this game are adults or in another reading it shows the primary mega fans are adults.

I don't disagree, but the MC in Persona 5 is kind of a half assed vessel as he has just enough personality to be an actual character.

This is why I wish Persona games would just move to university students instead. Same kind of environment same "schedule" but you can have more mature content as well as avoid stuff like this.

I do know, I have family who lives in Japan as I'm a japanese descendant and I was on the country for three different times. Regardless of it, your argument don't change that the people who buys video games would be called otaku basically for that very act and the majority of buyers since the beginning of the industry are otaku. The only difference between otaku and a "normie" is that the first have a hobby and get called by a name. Of course, a "normie" can be casual and buy a game here and there but by other people, he would be seem as otaku, which was what I said.

Idk how this comparison is even being brought up, but a lot of posters here lack critical thinking skills so

YOU aren't the protagonist though! You can make decisions about what he does. But you never take the role of the MC. You can name him, but you can also name Tidus in FFX or Likk in Zelda.

That's the distinction I think you're missing.

Harry Potter is full of defined characters who the viewer has zero control over.

Idk how this comparison is even being brought up, but a lot of posters here lack critical thinking skills so
The new Harry Potter game has create your own character and is a prequel where your character goes to school and prob finds love.

That's up to Steam as a platform holder. As I said what I find more amusing is knowing it's 20/30+ year old men getting their jimmies rustled they can't slap the breasts of 16~17 year olds on PS4 (or apparently 15 as below).

Okay, mods above NSFW video of Senran is not embedded, so please no banning. Remove if you wish, but it's there to show off intimacy mode with a 15-year-old.

Funny as in, oh the irony of men these ages telling everyone "this is made for teenagers!".
Now that's something worth complaining about! Jesus.

I'm playing a teen age guy, not an adult.
Same as reading a high school romance novel where once again I don't self insert.
This just feels like an opportunity to discredit those who enjoy the game, added by some users shaming folks with anime avatars.

We're not going to anywhere and my argument of SIE regulation is being ignored so let's stop here since what I want to discuss isn't being discussed.

I feel the closest compromise we'd realistically get would be something like ScruffyTurtles Adult Confidant AU comic where the cast is made up of high school seniors and some college freshmen.

Probably enough to make everyone over 18 though which would hopefully put more people at ease at least, but still keeps the high school setting.
Atlus could just make a college that's similar to a high school.
At least P3-5 have the protagonist be someone new in town going to a new school meeting new friends which is everyone's experience in university.

Persona 6 would also be the 6th main entry so a slight change up would probably be refreashing.
Not asking for them to be office co workers like I've seen before.

Scruffy Turtles is a degenerate PERVERT according to this thread for drawing lingerie haru

I say this as someone who desperately wants college student cast Persona.

Im a massive anime fan.

LOTGH, Berserk, DBZ, Jin Roh, Satoshi Kon movies

But as a fan, I work to critically analyze the things I enjoy and the problems they have
yeah, agreed. it's crazy how much anime and game fans (and fans of "nerdy" things in general, tbh) base their entire identity around those things, to the point where the smallest criticism becomes an attack on their person. you can like something and still criticize aspects of it. it is SO easy to say "yeah, i love persona, but that chainmail bikini thing? no thanks". instead you have people struggling to find reasons to justify it. i don't understand.
Sure the fandom that hangs around ResetEra does tend to be the dudes pushing the waifu thing a bit, but that tends to be tongue in cheek at best as it is with most anime fans.
"it's just a meme bro". nah, we should adopt a zero-tolerance policy for people talking about wanting to fuck underage characters. full stop. it's not funny, it's weird and creepy. stop defending the guys that make your community look bad.

The main protag is a teenager on a not so progressive society, thus the lack of same sex relationships. Also the date thing is completely veiled ... It's different from the exposure of Mass Effect, or Witcher for example.... If you will, in your imagination, on level 10 social link they didn't have sex. It's just a first time lover, very juvenile actually.

With the bikini armor I think Japan has has different standards with what they can show, as the dancing games are all Cero B, games for twelve and up. Also, to anyone who play Dragon Quest know is that it is a homage to the female warrior.

...?

I can name the protagonist, I can make my own decisions as the protagonist, yet Im not the protagonist?

Yes. The charecter has a predefined personality and backstory. You can't change that.

This is from one of the many paragraphs on his Wikipedia page

His profile states that he appears quiet and well-mannered, but this behavior is a profound ruse that hides the heart of a rebellious trickster. He is extremely resistant to rigid and dogmatic forms of control-based authority and order. He has received much criticism, insults, opposition and even death threats for his rebellious nature, whether it be his targets, school staff, disapproving comments left on the Phantom Aficionado Website, etc.

The only thing I found questionable is dating the teacher because she was much older than my game character. However, I thought it was interesting that it was tackling subjects that are normally in video games.

Ok how about thinking this way: Persona 5 is a game built for teenagers where they date teenagers, but adults are not forbidden from playing it.

The self taken survey in the OP is the only thing we have to go off of and it shows that the primary people buying this game are adults or in another reading it shows the primary mega fans are adults.
So what? Did it occur to you that the people who took the survey were teenagers and became fans of 3 and 4 and are now adults who wanted to play 5 based on that? Based on the "my first persona" results, that could largely be the case. That doesn't make 5 made for adults.
