What is Persona?
With its first release in 1996, the Persona series originally began as a spin-off of the larger turn-based, dungeon crawling Shin Megami Tensei franchise, and focused on the high school setting introduced in 'Shin Megami Tensei: If.' After the Persona 2 duology (Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment) that followed, the Persona series evolved into what players recognize today with the release of Persona 3 in 2006. The third installment in the series placed a heavier emphasis on social interaction & relationships with other characters (dubbed Social Links), its one-year calendar system, and a modernized user interface; all of which now serve as important parts of the series' identity.

What is Persona 5?
Persona 5 is a story-driven, turn-based JRPG set in modern Tokyo (taking place primarily within districts based on Shibuya and Sangenjaya) that follows a protagonist who attains the ability to summon a manifestation of his psyche & personality, known as a Persona, and uses this newfound power to change the unjust world around him.

Persona 5 serves as the next evolution of the Persona series style introduced in 2006 with Persona 3, and places not only a renewed focus on series staples like Social Links (now Confidants), the calendar system, and dungeon exploration, but also on returning features inspired by those found in Persona 1 & 2, namely demon negotiations (now known as Hold Ups), additional skill types (Nuclear & Psychic), and secondary weapon types. (Guns)

How long is the game?
Check the Game Information above for specifics, but the average player should take around
105 Hours
to reach the credits.

Do I need to play Persona 1, 2, 3, or 4 first?
Outside of easter eggs, cameos, and references to the casts of past games, each numbered Persona title is a separate experience; primarily focused on their own unique stories, casts, and events. Because of this, Persona 5 requires no knowledge of past games to enjoy. At the same time, however, each game in the series spins an engrossing tale, and are all definitely worth experiencing.

What's with the OT Title?
You'll find out eventually.

What should I name the Protagonist?!
The closest you'll get to an official name right now is 'Akira Kurusu' - used in the official manga.

I've finished the game! Where do I go to talk about spoilers freely?
Here's the spoiler thread! (NG Link. You've been warned - twice.)

What if I want to get funky on the dance floor?
Soon.

Game Synopsis

After having to transfer to a high school in Tokyo, the protagonist has a strange dream.

With the goal of "rehabilitation" looming overhead, he must save others from their distorted desires through his work as a Phantom Thief. After spending a memorable year bonding with the people around him, what awaits…?

During the day, the protagonist can enjoy the life of a student, spending his time however he pleases. After school, he dons the mask of a Phantom Thief and fights to reform corrupt adults. With the use of the mysterious mobile app "Metaverse Navigator", he can enter the world within people's hearts, and with the power of Persona, steal the source of their distorted desires.

Your power may be limited on your own, but by forming bonds with the people around you, you just might be able to change the world.

Okay, but why should I buy Persona 5?
NCqE5aG.png

  • Living a Double Life:
Persona 5 takes place across an entire calendar year, and during that time players assume the dual roles of the Protagonist, a young man who must balance the tumultuous life of a Japanese high school student and the daring escapades of a Phantom Thief on a day-to-day basis.

Sometimes this means going shopping for food, training at the gym, going fishing, or indulging in hobbies. Other times this means working a part-time job to earn money for your larcenist endeavors, following leads & gathering information, building tools, or meeting up with your motley crew of friends. Regardless of how you spend your time, there's always something to do in Persona 5.
m4QG7AY.png

  • A Little Help from My Friends:
Even the best Phantom Thief can't work alone, and Persona 5 takes that to heart with its new 'Confidant' system, an evolution of the Social Links from past titles. Using the Confidant system, the Protagonist can build relationships with the key residents of Tokyo as well as other members of the Phantom Thieves, providing benefits both inside and outside of battle.

In Persona 3 & 4, these benefits were limited to experience bonuses when creating new personas - not so in Persona 5. Now, in addition to the traditional experience bonuses, the protagonist will also gain access to new allies, medicines, tools, and abilities as he develops relationships with those around him.
v70jxe6.png

  • To Catch a [Phantom] Thief:
Persona 5 has also overhauled its dungeon designs with completely new mechanics for the Phantom Thieves to take advantage of. In previous titles, dungeons consisted of labyrinthine, randomly generated floors, lacking in verticality. In Persona 5, however, all dungeons – referred to as 'Palaces' in-game – are now handmade, deliberately designed spaces, featuring their own puzzles, mechanics, set pieces and motifs.

Taking it a step further, the Phantom Thieves are more agile than the casts of previous Persona games, and are able to dart in and out of cover, sneak past and ambush enemies, climb through windows, and more. Just make sure to stay hidden, though: every time you're seen, the enemy will become progressively more alert, and you may have to call the mission off until another day!
phKuWWW.png

  • Hold Up! (& Pass That Baton!):
On top of the return of classic Nuclear and Psychic skills, as well as equipment like firearms, are several new additions and improvements to the modern Persona combat system that both new and returning players can appreciate. All new to Persona is the 'Baton Pass' mechanic, an option that sees a playable character forfeit their turn to one of their partners in crime, passing along buffs that make their next strike that much more powerful.

Persona 5 also introduces a twist on the classic SMT mechanic of demon negotiations, here called 'Hold Up!' Once all enemies have been knocked down, the thieves surround them with weapons drawn, and can request items, money, or even their cooperation. If you'd rather not bother with the trouble, you can always just take them out with an all-out attack – another returning mechanic from Persona 3 & 4.

Oh, and all of this happens without needing to scroll through menus. Cool, right?
hZmjnmQ.png

  • The Music:
Once again composed by Atlus' very own talented Shoji Meguro, the music of Persona 5 continues the series tradition of stellar, unique soundtracks. This time inspired by acid jazz, the 100+ song soundtrack combines smooth vocals – courtesy of new Persona singer Lyn – with violin, piano, brass, bass and more to satisfy the senses with a wave of modern musical bliss, suiting Persona 5's coming-of-age picaresque tale perfectly.
Tgpe6BT.png

  • Character & World Designs:
Shoji Meguro is in turn joined by returning artist Shigenori Soejima (Lead Character Designer: Persona 3, Persona 4, Catherine) who sets out to make the most of the bold themes presented within Persona 5, from the party's designs to their phantom thief costumes to the buildings and prefectures they inhabit. If the art used in this OT hasn't yet convinced you that the designs needed their own bullet point, then be sure to click below to view GIFs and screenshots of the game proper.
AqwDAru.png

  • Style On Speed Dial:
From its very first PV, it was clear that the next Persona title would be a massive visual step up from previous releases – but even then, the good folks at Atlus exceeded expectations. Persona 5 exudes style: menus pop with crisp decals, colors, and transitions, character portraits and text boxes are animated and dynamic, every party member gets their own all-out attack cut-in, and much, much more.

Woo. Hopefully PersonaEra discord gets in soon. Anyone try an all auto run on a harder difficulty?

Dat title. Great stuff.

Glad to be back. I will certainly be lurking/posting here a lot. Still on my NG+ run in P5 in fact (actually haven't progressed at all since Saturday...), and there are probably enough things I want to share about it.

I was mostly lurking back on gaf, but here on reset I fully intend to not just remain a lurker, nice that Persona OT is up and running again.

I'm likely to mostly lurk as I did previously, but glad to see a thread up! I'm just about finishing my NG+ and close to the plat, but considering going in for a third run as a leisure thing when I'm not in the mood to play something new—I still can't get enough, I guess.

No overall Persona series OT yet? Oh well, nice for P5 to at least have one for the time being.

Best JRPG I've played since DQVIII. Then again it was my first Persona game ever.

I was also PhantomThief on that other forum by the way :). Big P5 fanboy here haha.

Thinking I might start a NG+ on Persona 5 soon. Haven't done that on a game in a while, and I really want to replay this.

Hey gang. Finally getting ready for my new game plus replay of this.

I mostly lurked in the past SMT and Persona threads, but I think I'll be making more of an effort now.

The thread title is brilliant lol.

One thing I've always wondered is, if you have more than one enemy attacking you, and you weaken them to the point where you can do an All Out Attack, does choosing to target the weakest of the enemies (at that point) increase your chances of the All Out being successful? I'd always assumed it did but never actually figured it out.

I've been slowly clearing my way through NG+, I don't think I'm going to max out my confidants, I only just visited the shrine in september, could have shaved a lot of time/useless days by praying there. So NG++ will likely be in order, going to try and complete as much of the compendium as I can this time around.

Are you going to Chihaya as well? Visiting her daily helps greatly.

I'm currently at 6/27 and just finished Palace 3. Things are going pretty well so far with my confidants, even if I don't have the right personas in my deck half the time. The only problem right now is that I often have nothing to do during the afternoons, while the evenings are crammed with people wanting to hang out with me.

In the meantime, I've started to boost specific personas for mementos farming and simply because I like them. I'm focusing on Mandrake (for mementos), and Succubus (because I like her) so far. Mandrake is level 18 with 20 luck and 16 magic, Succubus is level 23 with 22 magic and 26 agility. Mandrake's skills are so-so, but at least it has Pulinpa and Null Phys/Fire. Succubus has Agidyne, Garudyne, Psiodyne, Freidyne and Eigaon and a few throwaway skills. She's more suited to boss fights than to palace exploration at the moment, so I'm thinking of getting another physical orientated persona to help out with that.

I've also decided to turn the language back to Japanese, 35 hours in. The English dub wasn't bad at all, but I simply wasn't feeling it. Maybe it's simply because I've already played through hundred hours with the Japanese dub.

Well, shit. I always have issues with Confidants/Slinks, hell, my 1st Persona 4 playthrough I never met the old lady or younger brother.

Yeah, Chihaya only costs 5000 yen per telling, which should be pocket money on NG+. And she isn't available during rain, but that isn't too often.

If I remember correctly, she's also available both during the afternoon and at night, so that's a plus too. It's only her confidant itself that is night-time only.

Wait there's a shrine?

I'm at the penultimate dungeon and I didn't even go to the shrine or fish once lol.

I think I'm missing many hangout spots as well.

I actually never went to that shrine aside from one time with a confidant. I didn't even know you could pray there until after I had finished the game.

The only time I visited the fishing spot was the first time with Ryuji. I actually wanted to ignore his invitation, but luckily I didn't. That little event turned out to be pretty funny.

I bought Persona 5 for my PS3 at launch since I didn't have a PS4 back then. I have one now, and a friend has been teasing me with his sleek steelcase version. Seems Amazon.es has 3 copies left, so once I get this month salary (and the end of contract money) I'm totally getting it. I may not be proud of spending 75€ on it in the future, but common sense until it's late to send it back xD

Hopefully the PS3 version scarcity makes it more expensive over the years.

I accidentally discovered the Pulinpa trick in my first playthrough, so it wasn't that expensive even then. Despite most aliments being useful, I decided to focus on 2-3 of them since the amount of skills is limited. My favorites were definitely Pulinpa and Marin Karin. Demon negotiation is much easier with enemies affected by the later.

Probably missed some important mechanics, I'd say. A few bullet points :

- Either the first or last Persona in the list is the one you just got. You can totally release it.
- Save your Personas in the Compendium, fuse them, to get stronger one (especially from Arcanas where you can get an EXP buff), rebuy old ones. Fuse, fuse, fuse.
- You can pretty much find every enemy in the Persona compendium / Fusion list. It's a good way to learn the weakness of an enemy that's giving you trouble.
- You can switch party members between battles, no need to go into a Safe Room.
- Change your equipment, at least your armour rather often. You get some of chests too.
- Status aliments work well for incapacitating an enemy without weaknesses while you get rid of the rest.
- Debuff enemy attack in bosses, you should have the skill and single target debuffs are much more useful than single target buffs.

Ok thanks...I tried switching a member in between battles but couldnt see it lol...I tried normal fusing like 2 lovers but it says impossible, not sure why...if I hit the weak points of 2 ennemies but dont kill them, they wake up and attack right away...? seems like it,thats what killing me going down in the 3rd palace...those damn bigger Pixie type hit me with their fire skill that hits all 4 of my guys,if 2 where in weak state, they both do it,plus sometimes a one more, and then the 2 horse guys attack also,boom,dead...

Spoiler the answer to this, just in case but will I really get a Game Over if I dont beat the Palace in the 5 days left...?

You get a bad ending.

There is an option to sort by result, where you can see which Personas you can create with the ones you own. Much easier method.

You have all your party members set to manual? Are you using Baton Pass? How are your Confidants shaping? If you down all enemies you get a chance to do an All Out Attack, have you been using that too? Baton Pass + All Out Attack make the game much easier.

Yep,doing all that...I have a few Confidants at rank 5,the Phan site guy is even Rank 6...newer ones like the journalist and Maid are still low...strange that I am struggling all of a sudden, although using the Thieves Guild thing,it says people are/where like level 28 and I am 23,so I will grind a few levels I guess.

My man! Atlus may have given her the short shrift in the main story, but Noir will forever be my P5 bae.

(source, needs Pixiv account to view rest of set/full size)

Here's to the anime and/or Crimson/Red/(whatever the rerelease will be called) doing her justice.

100% - Haru was robbed (it's a pun!) in the original game. There's so much of the localization and pacing that can be cleaned up for the re-release.

Hello my people!

Finished NG+ last week and finally got platinum. Played the second playthrough with JP voices which was a nice change.

Rivers in the Desert is GOAT boss theme BTW. My 5 year old even loves it and asks me to put it on so she can dance to it :D

NG+ is good, but the game has lost some of its excitement. Afternoon/night-time activities like going to the theater, working at the flower shop and studying at the dinner aren't as fulfilling as they were, since the social stat points you get are worthless because you already maxed everything. The dungeons are more of a drag, too, since you already know all the puzzles and stuff they throw at you. Honestly, if it weren't for the things that are only possible during NG+, I would've rather started the game fresh again. I miss the pressure of trying to max everything in one playthrough.
