With everyone quarantined at home and on social media more than ever, by now, you've probably heard about Nintendo's new game, Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This Vegan Guide to Animal Crossing: New Horizons will help answer some of the tough ethical questions that the game presents as well as give you tips on how to help real animals while living your island life.

Is fishing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons vegan?
This is a biggie. Fishing isn't vegan! You shouldn't fish in real life, so you shouldn't fish in the game!

Sure, unlike in real life, the fish in Animal Crossing: New Horizons don't feel pain, but fishing is harmful to animals and the planet. This is your island and it's your job to protect it. Ripping the wildlife right out of their ocean homes so you can "donate" them to Blathers so he can keep them captive in tiny museum exhibits is not only cruel, but it's bad for the environment!

In the real world, every year, anglers leave behind a trail of tackle victims that includes millions of birds, turtles, dolphins, and other animals who suffer debilitating injuries after they swallow fishhooks or become entangled in fishing lines. Wildlife rehabilitators say that discarded fishing tackle is one of the greatest threats to aquatic animals. Don't let this happen on your island!

It's disappointing that a game that has villagers from all different species (from elephants and ducks to deer and pigs) living and coexisting harmoniously with humans – yet fish and bugs are left out of that. Instead of being recognized as the living, breathing, feeling individuals that they are, fish and bugs are disregarded as forms of entertainment for the other villagers. Your island should be a safe space for all animals, big and small.

Is Tom Nook Exploiting you?
Tom Nook is a tanooki, a racoon dog. Racoon dogs are often killed their fur. Tom Nook's family may have been beaten, anally electrocuted to death, gassed, or skinned alive. Cut him some slack.

I think we should all cut PETA some slack in these trying times. They're probably frustrated they can't kill any defenseless animals while under quarantine

I guess they're suffering from stealing people's pets and euthanizing them withdrawal

It's a game, let people do whatever they like. Don't get why PETA needs to do this
PETA's whole model is taking in money and using it for dumb PR moves like this (which works, I mean we're talking about it!) They put out some shitty half thought out reaction to a popular thing, people dunk on it because of how stupid it is and it keeps PETA in people's minds.

I cant help but think that this would make for an interesting challenge run. Wonder how different one would need to play the game and what wouldnt be possible anymore for game progression.

PETAs sole purpose is be outrageous/grab attention in order to get a few more donations so it can keep self perpetuating. Best to ignore it and move on and definitely don't let hijack any serious discussion about animal welfare, or cute animal game.

What about the wasps, scorpions, and tarantulas since they actively attack you?

Honestly, I don't think this is supposed to be taken seriously. Obviously the notion of roleplaying vegan for ethical reasons is ridiculous, but I'd assume they take up that opportunity to alert people to some real life issues. The game is probably just window dressing, so I wouldn't put much stock in it.

Unless I'm wrong, of course, and they're total nutcases.

I'm not vegan, but I understand them. It's not a bad goal, animals go through a lot of horrible stuff. We are even cruel to our own, human nature can be, usually is very cruel, especially when they think no one is watching.

This is PETA. Joking around about virtual meat isn't their forte.
They even complained about super meat boy when it got released.

TBF that was Ed McMillen deliberately trolling them. Upsetting fundamentalists is his hobby since childhood (he grew up in a fundie household).

Speaking as a vegan, catching virtual animals in Animal Crossing is just as fine as murdering virtual people in other games. However, it is important to think about the real-life implications of fishing if anyone feels "inspired" by AC to take up the real practice.

At least Blathers won't have any creepy bugs sullying his pristine museum of the ancient forerunners.

y'know we wouldnt be talking about something so stupid like this if it didn't work well enough for people to make threads about it... thus... making PETA know they should keep doing this.
