Hey, This isn't the place to complain about how PSO2 isn't coming to the west. We get it, it sucks. Please don't fill the thread with drive-by posts about it.

This thread was created on behalf of ChickenHunter though either him or myself can be contacted for any clarifications or update requests.

Before you go downloading the PS4 version, here's how to register. You'll need 45gb of free space. Here's how to download the PS4 version.

If you want to play the PC version using English patches, get the Tweaker tool which will install the English patches for you. It can also translate item names.

And if you want to play on the Vita, here's a guide for that too.
Or if you prefer a different, phone based experience, here's how to start that.

vTUBcY4.png

Phantasy Star Online 2 is an online action-rpg. You choose a class, select quests, take client orders, level up, start a rock collection, get those iconic PSO red boxes, and generally watch the numbers go up. Combat varies from class to class, going anywhere from hack-and-slashing to third person shooting, magic casting, John Woo simulating, Neopets, and now transforming into a final boss. There is also an extensive story mode that will take you to such exciting locales as a forest planet, a lava planet, Tokyo, a planet that looks like Feudal Japan, and a medieval fantasy world.

  • Genre: Online RPG
  • Developer & Publisher: Sega
  • Pricing: Free-to-play with premium services.
  • Release: 4th of July 2012 (Japan), Heat death of the universe (West)
  • Platforms: PC, Mac, Vita, PS4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Anime
  • Official site: Link

9J8ihZd.png

  • OS: Windows XP 32bit | Windows Vista or Windows 7 32bit or 64bit
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 or above
  • RAM: Windows XP:1.5GB+ | Vista or Windows 7:2GB+
  • HDD: 45 gb
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT or similar or higher
  • Direct X: Direct X 9.0c or higher
  • Official benchmark and Character creator can be downloaded here. You can use the character you create here in the main game!

yDjs6t9.png

  • Ship02 is the unofficial English community server. Some Era members are also on Ship01.
  • There is no ongoing IP block on the Japanese version.
  • It is NOT possible to buy the AC (in-game currency for paid content) directly using a non-Japanese credit card. It is, however, possible to purchase AC/iAC through the PSO2es smartphone app using your non-Japanese credit card. Otherwise, you'll have to buy WebMoney from a third party and use that. AC can be bought through the JP PSN Store as well.
  • You can theoretically get banned for using the English patches (they're against the TOS), but it hasn't happened to anyone yet and likely won't.
  • Everyone can make 3 characters for free. Each character only gets 1 [free] mag, so you could use the 3 characters to cover each damage type if you wanted to (more on this later).
  • Maintenance occurs every Wednesdays at 11:00 ~ 17:00 JST, or Tuesdays at 10:00 PM ~ 4:00 AM Eastern, Other Time Zones
  • The Nintendo Switch version streams the game to your console, similarly to PS Now. Your experience with latency may vary.

3WvXfig.png

  • Mags are back - they can be fed, evolved and help you during quests
  • Party up with 3 friends, NPCs, or NPC versions of your friends
  • Interrupt Events - short randomly generated mini-objectives that pop-up mid quest
  • Challenge Quests. Special designed quests where you start at level 1 and work with 12 others to reach the end
  • Interior home decorating courtesy of MyRoom
  • Create or join a team with access to their very own team room
  • A Casino! Gamble casino coins to get items
  • A nice cafe to hang out in once you're bored of the main lobby
  • Crafting system. Make weaker weapons stronger or customize attributes of your techs and PAs
  • The ability to switch between the 8 classes for free, each with their own skill trees
  • Normal, Hard, Very Hard, Super Hard, Extra Hard, and Ultimate Difficulties
  • An ongoing Story mode with quests that lead to interesting and exclusive content
  • Emergency quests which appear for a limited time
  • Fishing and Mining because you need those in an MMO(?)
  • An absurd amount of character customization and cosmetic items

eKNNH3L.png

All paid content is bought with Arks Cash (1 AC = 1 yen), which is an in-game currency bought with real money. AC can be bought through the PSO2 website (only with a Japanese credit card), or exchanged for with WebMoney. It is possible to purchase AC/iAC through the PSO2es smartphone app using your non-Japanese credit card. Otherwise, you'll have to buy WebMoney from a third party and use that. AC can be bought through the JP PSN Store as well.

Aside from the premium set subscription, you can purchase things like new skill trees, new mags, more crafting slots, cosmetic scratch tickets, and so on.

0totJcW.png

There are 10 classes available all from the start for all characters. Switching between classes can be done at any time, for free, in the Arks Lobby. Each class has its own skill tree. Once you unlock subclasses, you can use skills from the subclass in addition to your main class. However you can not equip the weapons from your subclass or use its PAs unless the specific weapon can be equipped by multiple classes. Setting your subclass to a class that can use Techs like Force, Techer, Bouncer, or Summoner will let you cast techs as your main class even without the use of a tech weapon. You can change your subclass at will as well so there is room for experimentation. Warning: Certain class combos will obviously be better/more effective than others.
  • Hunter - Uses Swords, Partisans, and Wired Lances. Bulkier melee fighters with a strong set of skills that can either increase damage, decrease damage taken, or improve survivability.
  • Fighter - Uses Double Sabers, Knuckles, and Twin Daggers. Close-range Melee fighters with skills focused on increasing damage as much as possible.
  • Ranger - Uses Rifles and Launchers. Long-range class capable of doing high amounts of damage and providing support to the whole party.
  • Gunner - Uses Twin machine guns and Rifles. Close-ranged class focused on doing stylish flips and gun combos.
  • Force - Uses Rods and Talis. Magic class focused on casting magic and with skills to boost damage.
  • Techer - Uses Wands and Talis. Magic class centered around supporting the party and whacking things with wands.
  • Braver - Uses Katanas and Bows. Close to medium range class providing options for both melee and ranged combat. Can excel at mobbing or bossing when set up properly.
  • Bouncer - Uses Dual Blades and Jetboots. A hybrid of melee and magic with good single target damage and capable of offering support to the party.
  • Summoner - Uses Pets. A class that uses pets as its offense. Can be very strong if in the right hands.
  • Hero - Uses Swords, Twin machine guns, and Talis. The first "advanced" class, requiring a class of each of the 3 damage types to be at level 75 to unlock. Subclasses cannot be played in conjunction with this class. So strong that there's no reason to use any of the other classes outside of certain scenarios.
eSlMcrM.png

g8WuaZz.png
  • Humans - Not actually the jack of all trades they are advertised to be. Males are better at melee, females are better at magic.
  • Newmans - The space elves. More magic oriented. Best at magic.
  • Casts - Robot/cyborgs. Bulkiest class. Good for ranged and melee. Not good at magic.
  • Dewmans - Pale skin, heterochromatic eyes, and horns. Good/best at all damage types. Lower HP (not by a lot, doesn't actually matter).
Stat differences are largely negligible. Any race/gender can equip any gear with no difficulty. The stat differences only matter in min/max scenarios.

9UoL7rn.png

  • The early game is very simple really. You get to make three characters for free. Most people either have one character do every class or have one character do ranged and melee classes and have their second character be a female Newman who focuses on magic classes.
  • As soon as you can, do the first story mission of EP4 to unlock the Tokyo area quests. Once you've finished all the Tokyo quests you unlock daily client orders and recommended quests. Recommended quests refresh every day and give you items for clearing them with A-rank or higher. This is important because they are the only source for keys to Bonus Quests which are easy quests that have high exp payouts.
  • Once you obtain your mag, pick a class or at least a damage type (striking, ranged, tech) to main and then level up your mag to be (best case scenario) entirely that attack stat.
  • Do Koffie's unlock Client Orders until you've run out of them. You should be well into your 20 or 30's on two classes if you distribute the exp well.
  • If Emergency Quests are available, go to the level/difficulty appropriate block and do them. They're the best way to get exp. If you can manage to get into a party you'll get boosted exp gain based on how many people are in the party.
  • You should be able to buy low end rare weapons from the player shops for 1,000 meseta to help you along your way.
  • In the Arks lobby there's a guy in a red hat called Klotho. He has client orders for time attack quests that will be your main/most consistent money source for a long time. The earlier you start working on those the less you have to worry about money (you will never not worry about money, especially in this economy).
  • If you haven't been grinding or affixing your weapons and units by the time you reach VH or SH definitely start doing so. The quality of your gear really starts to matter here.
  • When you start you can largely ignore focusing on the crafting system as its a huge money sink. The system lets you request for other players to do crafts for you. Once you reach the endless grind for 13* you'll want to start doing Zieg's Client Orders since he's one of the only sources of grinders for 13*.
  • What you're doing at level 1 will actually not be all that different from what you can do at level 75
  • Challenge Mode is mostly separate from the rest of the game. The best rewards you can get out of it are photon boosters (used to unlock special weapon latent abilities), lambda grinders (used for grinding 13*), and the Ideal 13* weapons (best for bossing weapons like rifle).
  • Death is meaningless, don't worry about it.
  • Maximizing damage and learning to dodge attacks well is a good thing.

WqWFSpW.png

Q: Is this out in West? When is it coming?
A: It's not. It won't be coming anytime soon.

Q: Is it pay-2-win?
A: Depends on how you see it. Having premium will allow you to expedite grindier sections by being able to buy 10, 11, and 12 star weapons and units. Aside from that you can rack up a ton of meseta by AC Scratching and selling what you get. Though free players can buy any AC Scratch item from player shops so you won't be locked out of aesthetics or special scratch items. However, the AC Scratches now have exclusive rewards for buying certain numbers of AC Scratches. Additionally, you can buy Star Gems which are used in their own exclusive scratch ticket, can be used to buy rare enemy and EQ summon items, and get some useful affix items. You could effectively whale your way into riches/power, though it's not recommended.

Q: Can PS4, Vita, Switch and PC players play together? How about PSO2es?
A: Yes. There are version exclusive server lobby blocks and shared blocks. PSO2es can not play with other versions as it is effectively a different game.

Q: Why can't I do daily orders?
A: You need to clear Tokyo Free Field Exploration. To unlock the Tokyo area you need to do the 1st Ep4 story mission. To do so go to the Bridge, open the story panel and go through all the cutscenes until you finish the first story mission. After that you unlock the Tokyo Arks Quests, which lead to the Free Field. Once all that is done you'll be notified daily orders and recommended quests are unlocked.

Q: I just started, any gear I should be on the look out for?
A: Get a set of the Saiki units, affix them to fit your needs. Then pick a weapon from the collection file and work towards that.

Q: What should I do with my mag?
A: It's best to pick one attack type and max it out. Leveling up def stats is unnecessary as armors and dodging cover it better. Dex/ability, the stat which decreases your damage variance, is effectively a dump stat so it's better not leveled. To try and min/max your mag you want to feed your mag weapons of the matching attack type to increase the mag's corresponding attack stat. Feeding mags weapons also increases their dex/ability stat, you'll want to lower it before it levels so feed the mag mono/di/tri-mates or 4/5/6 star furniture for S/R/T-atk mags respectively.
Three characters means 3 free mags. You could have one character cover each type of atk and its associated classes. Even if a mag solely has points in one type of attack, you can still do decent damage with the other types of atk through smart skill tree set-ups.

Q: What are some good class/subclass combos?
A: Hu/Fi, Hu/Br, Hu/Bo. Fi/Hu, Fi/Bo. Ra/Hu, Ra/Br, Ra/Gu. Gu/Ra, Gu/Hu. Fo/Te, Fo/Br. Te/Fo, Te/Br, Te/Hu. Br/Hu. Bo/Hu. Su/Gu, Su/Te. Hero does not use a subclass because it is broken all by itself.

Q: What should I do with my skill tree?
A: To avoid bloating the OP, please refer to this link. If you want a specific skill tree layout, ask in the thread or send me a PM.
Here is the skill tree for Heroes.

Q: Where do I find X mining/fishing material?
A: Please refer to this document.

Q: I hear there's an anime. Should I watch it?
A: Yes, there is an anime. It stars generic protagonist man who starts playing the video game PSO2 (Yes, PSO2 is a video game played by near-future Japanese people) to help the Student Council of Seiga Academy decide whether or not to ban the playing of PSO2 on campus, only to discover that the video game may not just be a video game!!! Its terrible but it is also canon to Ep4. Don't watch it unless you enjoy watching marketing trainwrecks.

Such a shame that this game has strayed so far from what made the series great, as there is literally nothing like it.

How is this game when it comes to playing it in Japanese? I'd like to get back into it again after playing it a bit of the PC version in English for a while, but I don't really remember how it'd be playing it without knowing what any of the writing says haha

I'm only wondering because the Switch would absolutely be a good platform for this, but obviously the lack of English there might be a pain

When's switch version?
Sometime in 2018.

Will huge fans of the original PSO enjoy this game. Or is it more Universe.
As long as you don't start to take the game too seriously, you'll have a lot of fun.

There are enough guides on Bumped with pictures and translations of menus that you could still navigate the game.

Matterboards gave me PTSD but I hear they got better with that in the years since I last played.

Maybe one day when I'm free of my mobile gacha game shackles I can go back to being a cute freckled bespectacled space robot mage in PSO2...

I'm fairly certain matterboards can be completely bypassed now if story progression is your only aim. Only Episodes 1-3 ever used them; Episodes 4-5 have a completely different progression mechanism.

Don't forget PSO2es exists also. PSO2 and mobage aren't mutually exclusive!

It's great to see this thread here.
Haven't played much recently - is it true that the story added in the last 1-2 bigger patches has been good?

I have this on Vita, but only an 8gb memory card. The guide says 32gb recommended. I liked what I played, but I don't know about another $60 on top of the initial buy-in.

Ep5 has been more related to the ep1-3 storylines, which is good. The fantasy world is visually ugly but its not as bad as ep4 was.

Is the english patch complete? Or is it still mainly just menu patches?
There are english patches for the story and item names now. You can toggle how much translation you want.

32gb is a requirement for the download version because the game is too large to fit on a 16gb memory card now. I'm not certain how much space is required on a memory card if you have the package version, but you might be able to get away with a 16gb card given you don't have much on it.

I've been on kind of an extended hiatus (the only thing I've done in a year and a half is renew my eligibility for expert blocks and unlock Hero and level 80 cap for Fo/Te) so I could start Heroing it up anytime but I'm pretty lost on how I should upgrade my equipment/skill trees/etc. I don't even have any skill rings, lol

Also, reposting this because I can

Ah, this is something I never considered, that's good news. Might have to try and nab a used 16gb and see if I get hooked again. Thanks!

If you're picking up a new memory card for this I would still go for at least a 32gb, as the game will only get larger and if this game continues to run for years and years eventually a 16gb card won't cut it under any circumstance.

That said, the Vita version is still unambiguously the worst way to play this game. The requirements on PC are very, very lax; for one, it runs and looks better on my work laptop with Intel integrated graphics, even though it technically doesn't meet the game's minimum requirements.

Wish I could still get into this game.

The combination of the direction they've gone into recently with regards to new content, plus the fact that hands still don't move (only NPCs get this privilege, it seems), plus the way they introduced Hero... it's all made me feel like any time I spend in this game is entirely pointless. I mean, more pointless than usual. The most fun I've had in the game was hanging out with other team members - which, to be fair, is something PSO2 happens to do really, really well. With the extreme number of emotes, the character customization, and all the ways you can express yourself through the chat system, it's probably the best chat lobby I've ever seen implemented in any video game.

But at this point, I'm ready to move on to an inevitable PSO3. The game just feels dated, despite everything they've done to try to keep it relevant (though they've refrained from making environments that are actually interesting to look at, for some reason). I jump back in every now and again just to check out the latest fashion, but their designs lately have been so samey that even that feels kind of hollow at this juncture. The ridiculous gender split does not help matters here at all. Ho-hum, Japan doing Japan things, I guess...

Good to see an OT for PSO2 here. I didn't see it mentioned but if anyone hasn't started PSO2es it's a good way to get three 15,000 exp tickets a day for logging in and you get additional storage to use as long as you have logged in to PSO2es in the last 30 days. A small nitpick on that Challenge mode bit in the Tips section:

"...and the Ideal 13* weapons (best for bossing weapons like rifle)."

Might be a leftover but I'm not sure I'd recommend using points on one of those now.

What does everyone think about Dark Blast?
After playing with it for a bit, I feel like it's an interesting idea, but I have some problems with the execution. Like many people complained, since the model is so similar to Hunar, I'm sometimes confused who I should attack. I hope they add more models in the future.

I wasn't feeling the new skill the first day at the Omega Buster Quest (specifically the defense phase, Hero is just too good that the crowd control and area damage felt better) but after upgrading most abilities it actually gets quite strong. I did get confused against Omega Hunars fighting each other in the beginning but then I just started listening/looking for normal Hunar behavior.

Also, the Basilisk and Nemesis NT weapons are quite strong. I'm not going to try RNG for the Nemesis NT but the Polytanland shop has nice stuff so I'm finishing the Basilisk weapons. Nice job Sega, heh.

Good to see theirs a community for this game here, tho I dont really play it to much anymore, I do still jump on on occasion to catch up on content and such.

Currently have multiple characters on Ship 2.

Just curious, anyone put much time in the new class? Hero class I think it was?
Wasn't a fan of what I heard about it, but wondering if anyone has first hand experience with it yet?

I actually feel strongly disappointed with PSO2. I think the very foundation of this game is flawed and it would require a complete rework for it to appeal to the masses outside of just fashion and action based gameplay. Below are a lot of the issues I have with this game.

-Rares dropping like candy
-No real incentive to play as a team or stick together
-So many moves are worthless in the grand scheme of things
-The focus on EQ's makes casuals never want to play until certain times

-EQ's such as the Dark Falz ones just turn the game into a spamfest of lul kill Dark Arms in 1 minute or less, or whichever other boss in 5 mins or less and there's so many people on your team that you really don't have to contribute much. I also feel it cheapens the experience of big boss battles.

-The levels can be skipped by just running past everything which hurts several aspects of the game such as boss importance, drops, and the feeling of beating a level.

-All of the things that tend to be added to the game to give it more depth just end up feeling like a nuisance and not that rewarding. If you're gonna have a crafting system, it needs to be at launch and far better designed so that it becomes a way to profit.

-All. Of. The. Inventory. Spam. Just playing the game is constantly rewarding with things that don't really feel like rewards cause you are spammed with them throughout runs like Mining Base. They would need to tone down all the etc items they give us so that they feel more valuable and might actually be worth something.

-No real incentive for casual players to not be using their 10* 11* 12* since there aren't gear requirements in this game to complete missions. Not only that, but they are more than serviceable.

PSO2 has fun combat at a basic level, but as time goes on you start to realize how shallow the game really is. Moves you wish you could use but can't cause...why would you when they suck so much? No real sense of team work designed into the games core, things made far too easy, no content that actually feels hardcore and truly rewarding if you win. In all honesty, I'm someone who values gameplay over fashion, but even I ended up playing the game namely for fashion as time went on. Not because It's my most favorite thing, but because the game is so damn boring and that the most 'depthful' part of the game is the fashion due to all the options and how heavily they focus on releasing so many outfits to sell stuff with their F2P MMO.

Once I got to that point and I realized I was spending money just to dress up my character, I stopped playing because there was no real fun left for me to be had that I hadn't already experienced over and over and over already with the same repetitive EQ, combat, and stage design.

I'm still unsure/unhappy about the Switch version being a cloud-streamed version. Just gives it a definite timed lifespan. Once it's removed, it'll be IMPOSSIBLE to play on Switch afterward.

I guess it hardly matters since it is an online-only game right? Still, my ideal solution would've been to make a PSO2 adaptation where it's a sort of 50/50 in terms of online and offline gameplay, or however the GC games were.

Yeah the game would need an extreme rework at this point to fix its problems. The devs seem pretty content with doubling down on their bad decisions though.

Man, I LOVED PSO on the Dreamcast. Last game I played was Universe and that was okay, but not the same thing. I'll download and check this out with English patches and hope I make it through the process. Thanks for this OT :D

Wow... This series was one of my "top 10 series I'd love to see on the switch" ideas. It's amazing to see it come to reality... sort of. So how does one play on the Switch? I see its cloud based. Anyway of explaining that and also any chance of being able to play with that PC english patch??

It's great to see a good PSO2 discussion again, I was thinking about making a PSO2 OT but based on how inactive the one in the previous place has been over the last few months, I assumed no one would post in it anyway, haha.

I completely agree that PSO2 could use some reworking. I've been playing the game since the 2nd alpha and have over a 1k hours in it, but ever since most of the people I've been playing stopped, I've been hopping in for a few weeks after every big update.
When the game started it definitely a shower of rares it is now, but even then it had its problems, like the extremely small number of areas etc. I think it's still doing well here, so I assume that rather than waiting for PSO3, giving them input through player surveys (there's one active right now which allows you to answer multiple questions about every class if you want to, together with free writing fields for good and bad things about each of them).

Can't tell you how it plays on the Switch, it doesn't even have a firm release date yet. Probably a bit laggy, since it's cloud based.

Thats ridiculous...why is it that over powered? Whats the point of having other classes if thats possible?!

I miss the days of Phantasy Star games having some form of balance...
Hero was made to be intentionally very strong, unsurprisingly they made it too strong. Hero essentially has a tool for every situation coupled with extremely good speed and mobility options. Additionally their skill tree is dedicated to passives that all boost attack output, this compounded with high base damage on all of their attacks results in the above. Its a lot of "hey wouldn't it be cool if you could do X" without stopping to consider the numbers, which is something the dev team has been guilty of doing forever.

If thats the goal, they may as well remove every other class, they just made them obsolete...

It's clearly meant to be a reward for playing for a long time given you have to have reached level 75 in all three class types to access it. Even though they've made it entirely too easy to level up without learning fundamentals first and this just drives people to take more leveling shortcuts...

Honestly, that makes me dislike it even more....that kind of design just begs for more elitism in a game community..

A few years ago that might have been a problem, but with them giving out experience boosts like candy, hitting 75 with one class is a few days work maximum.
If we're talking about elitism, requirements for level 80 and Expert Blocks are a much bigger deal, I think.

Well, they have been trying to balance the other classes but all the utility, animation timings, and the skill tree that Hero has are too ridiculous compared to the other classes' gimmicks that limit them.

When is this available on the switch and would US players be able to play? I used to play on PC back in the day and can read/write basic japanese so I hope I can jump on this!

I signed up for an account like 4 years ago, and I still get weekly emails from Sega about the game in Japanese that I can not for the life of me figure out how to unsubscribe from. That's my only experience, YMMV.

Same haha. Hell I even live in Japan now and have 0 clue how to turn these damn things off.

I do get nostalgic for this game though, I think there are way better online titles at this point though. SEGA's support of it all these years has seemed very good though.

This is the page where you turn off all those SEGA emails by the way, not the PSO2 one. Log in, go to your page, change registration information and from there you'll see the option to change newsletter settings.
I did it yesterday thanks to this thread, haha.

Okay so I've been playing PSO2 since vita beta or whatever and I played all the way till like 2013-14. Since then I sold my vita for my Pro at launch and haven't rebought it yet. I do have a Switch. Is the Switch version better than the vita version? Also is the hassle of switching memory sticks still there....

Tldr: I don't have a PC(lol) Is the Switch version better than the vita version?
When it comes out, it'll look better, but it might lag/hitch since it's actually being rendered server side and streamed to your console.

When you say Pro, you mean PS4? You could just play it on that...

Yeah I played it on PS4 Pro briefly and it was pretty nice. I wanna get into it again since I've been waiting on a new class
