All I care about it backwards compatability. PS4 is a given, but I want to see how far back it goes. I want full PS1, 2, 3 and 4 compatability.
Sure, but the reality is they would lose a decent amount of sales from having no PS4 back-compat, yet lose hardly any sales by omitting PS1/2/3 back-compat.

The further back you go, the more niche (yet no doubt still vocal) the desire for back compat.

Sounds expensive. Isn't the cheapest current gen 8C/16T Ryzen CPU near $300?

A question for people who understand about hardware: with these specs in mind does it make sense to think that PS5 could emulate PS3 somehow?

As expected. The big question is clock speed. Current Ryzen Mobile processors have a base clock of 2.3GHz, but the core configuration maxes out at 4c/8t, so it's very possible the PS5 and Nextbox processors will land closer to 2GHz (I don't expect either will support boost clocks).

Edit:
Yeah, I wasn't aware the Ryzen Mobile 3000 series is just a Zen+ refresh, as modiz kindly pointed out. I can certainly see the final base clock speed of a Zen 2-based mobile APU landing somewhere between 2.5GHz and 3GHz.

Time for 2 year contracts for the PS5. For the low low price of $25 a month for only two years you can get your own PS5!

I have no plan about hardware specs but when people here are satisfied, everything is fine :)

Can't wait for next gen VR !

Hopefully this cpu leap finally allows 60 fps to become the standard, not the exception, on consoles

I'm happy to hear that this is good news from people that understand the tech.

I know it's a custom CPU, but as for retail market AMD Zen 2 Ryzens, only the 3700, 3700x, 3800x models have eight cores. Gosh that'd be better than the 2600 I bought last year :_:

Amazing news! So will this be based on a R7 style chip, maybe?

They don't make an 8 core R3 or 5 chip right?
R7 based.
Ryzen 3 chips are 4 cores, 4 threads
Ryzen 5 chips are 4-6 cores, 8-12 threads
Ryzen 7 chips are 8 cores, 16 threads
Ryzen 9 chips are 12-16 cores, 24-32 threads

I think this kind of dictates that Xbox do likewise, and PC owners will probably need 16-thread (or core) CPUs to maintain parity next gen.
My Ryzen 7 3700X is ready for next-gen!

The consoles are based off the desktop chip this time, as the mobile ryzen 3000 chips are still based off zen+ instead of zen 2.
And the leaks so far have suggested 3.2GHz clock, which matches power consumption tests that were done with an underclocked ryzen 3700X.

Well, a full reveal being next year is to-be expected, I just wonder how far apart the PS5 and Xbox will be released. Will it be just 1 week apart like last time?

So right now, the corresponding desktop CPU would be Ryzen 7 3700X, currently $330 on BestBuy. Sure, consoles are different, but it's nice to have something to compare to.

PSP and Vita backwards compatibility as well.

(If we're asking for cherries, we may as well ask for all the cherries, regardless of how unlikely it might seem that we get them.)
But how will they handle Vita games that use the front touch screen?, and the rear touch pad is a whole other story.
