Japanese companies have been leading the way in the face of political cowardice for a few years now. The overall public position and attitudes on LGBTQ+ issues has already shifted but legally Japan's still held back by a vocal conservative core constituency.

according to the event's website, sega sammy was one of the few "platinum sponsors".

microsoft (though not specifically xbox) was gold, playstation was silver, and sony was bronze

Toro won't be constrained by gender. Toro is the gender fluid icon we all need right now.

That's great to see. Glad to see LGBT+ gaining more acceptance in Japan.

Interesting to see only Sega, Sony, Microsoft, and Apple as sponsors there in the games industry. Google's not there.

Edit: not last year but 2020. 2021/2022 were both virtual events.
