PlayStation will open a new development office in Malaysia in 2020.

It's the company's first Southeast Asian studio and will provide art and animation as part of Worldwide Studios's efforts to make exclusive games for PlayStation consoles. Worldwide Studios includes the likes of Guerrilla Games, Japan Studio, Insomniac, Media Molecule, Naughty Dog, Polyphony Digital, London Studio, Sucker Punch, and many more.

PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan added: "Impressive talent, a vibrant game ecosystem, and support from the government are key reasons why we have decided to take our partnership with Malaysia to the next level."

Is this a full fledged studio or a support one like bamco has?
It's right there in the OP: "......and will provide art and animation as part of Worldwide Studios's efforts to make exclusive games for PlayStation consoles."

They will provide art and animation. It's a support studio, which will support Sony's 1st party dev studio like Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, Sony Santa Monica, Sucker Punch, etc.

It may not be related at all, but No Straight Roads from malaysian studio Metronomik was heavily promoted by PlayStation France during Paris Games Week.

Anyway, having more internal workforce to help on those big open world games is a great thing, but in the meantime we still don't have any formal news about the still unknown Manchester Studio beyond the vacancies and about whatever is happening in San Diego (new team or studio).

It's cool to open support studios in these regions but it would be 100 times more exciting if they actually opened a dev studio in a region which doesn't have much of a development scene yet. Especially if it's coming from a culture which doesn't get much representation in games.

interesting. larian opened a studio in malaysia too. is there a new government initiative to support game development there?

edit: right, it does say government support is a reason. very cool, we'll probably see more studios pop up there.

As I said in the other thread.

The development of Death Stranding could be the template for other WWS titles. With studios helping each other as and when needed. Plus specialist studios like this helping with animation etc.

More hands on deck to help with the heavy lifting always beneficial.

Interesting. I been saying SIE needs to create some new First party studios in Asia since its a growing market but I didn't expect their first one to be a support studio. Still great news though.

remember that a support studio can eventually grow into its own studio, like sony's visual arts service group now making a new AAA game. by starting as a support studio they can build experience to the studio.

on topic this is great to hear, its an area with strong potential so its good to see game development companies take notice as of late.

It seems the want to avoid/reduce outsourcing as much as possible, by keeping the asset generation within the group. Has been working well for them so far with VASG.

Make more of these studios more than just support studios! The types of experiences that could be influenced by local cultures is a missed opportunity!

Yoshida was actually in Malaysia yesterday (he might still be there) when those new positions were announced

This is why it's always been surprising that Sony doesn't have a Canadian studio. Isn't the Canadian government well known for really supporting game development?

It's more specific provinces that do.

Seeing the credits of most games now a days, there is a huge list for outsourced animation and art, makes sense to start a studio that just does that for first party games. Might also help with leaks as well

Very smart company and realizes you don't stick to what you have no matter how successful you are. It could one day grow into its own studio that develops its own games. Great move by Sony.

SIE already worked with some malaysian outsource studios.

- Lemon Sky helped with Spider Man and Uncharted Lost Legacy.
- Passion Republic helped with Spider Man, Uncharted Lost Legacy, Days Gone, The Order 1886 and small titles like Drawn to Death and Shadow of the Beast. Playstation also promoted their first internal title GigaBash.
- Virtuos (Singapore) helped with many other SIE titles.

May be Sony will acquire Passion Republic and expand it or they will just build entirely new studio.

Very interesting, Malaysia diving into the gaming scene.

The more the better for us all. Great news.

AAA games in particular tend to do a lot of outsourcing of art and animation to other Asian studios like Virtuos, so Sony buying a studio just for that sort of production makes sense.

RockStar games made a very similar move this past May, buying Dhruva Interactive specifically for their art output and folding them into RockStar India.

This. I'd really like to see developers from less represented countries get some time to shine. It would be great to see how their culture colors the kinds of games they would make.

Great news, and what is a support role now, can turn into a full fledged development house in a few years. Good on them to start a fresh team in a developing market instead of just aquisitions.

Playstation is huge in Southeast Asia so it would be great to build development studios there.

To all the "shouldn't just be a support studio" people, you do realise that games require tons of resources, right? Teams like this are necessity in order to make the kind of games you expect from WWS.

Yeah also I think it would be crazy to assume the studio wouldn't have a small team prototyping ideas and pitching stuff.

Visual Arts has always been a crucial part of AAA game development of SIE. More interesting is why Sony needs an additional support studio. They already have:

- Visual Arts Service Group in San Diego;
- San Mateo Studio;
- Sony XDev Europe;
- External Development Team at Santa Monica Studio;
- Japan Studio;

I see two possible reasons. May be Visual Arts really have their own internal team and their capacity is full and Japan Studio is focusing on internal development with a possible AAA project.

Or SIE has started too many projects and they want additional help. I mean, there are so many possible collaborations. For example Remedy, Housemarque, Bluepoint, FromSoftware, Ready At Dawn, Firesprite others...

Yeah like others have mentioned it's not really up to the Canadian federal government, it's dependant on the provinces. BC used to be home to a bunch of EA sports studios, Alberta has BioWare but recently cut video games studio incentives with the changes in provincial government, Ontario is home to a ton of smaller studios like dev of cuphead, and Quebec is home to many Ubisoft studios as well as Eidos when they made Deus ex HR and MR

Yup would great to see this studio possibly become like SIE's VASG in the future. All round great move by Sony to open a new studio in a growing market and provide even more help to their other worldwide studios.
