What is this thread?

Just a place to dump your poems. We used to do a Poetry Nook but due to a lack of participants both here and on the old site, they died off. So we decided to just make an OT where people can post their work, look for feedback, and share reading recommendations whether they be books, songs, or.... well anything really. Just talk about poems, whether your own or others.

But what IS poetry?

"I really don't know
Rhymes? Meter? Half-rhymes?
Just do whatever."

In all seriousness, poetry is about self-expression. There's a huge range of types from sonnets with a very strict format and subject matter to non-traditional poems that read more as insane ramblings. Poetry tends to either be very strict about its rules or so broad that you would think there are no rules. Really as long as there are lines and then breaks and it sounds kinda pretty to someone, it probably counts as a poem.

But I'm not good at poetry…

Don't worry! No one is! Poetry is still fun though. It's an excellent form of self-expression and even if you don't end up posting in this thread, I always recommend writing a few poems down when you feel like it in your own time. There's something cathartic/therapeutic about writing something really angsty in a journal and then burning the pages. But if you're feeling a bit brave, we'd love for you to drop a poem or a stanza or even a line in here just to share.

How do I get better at Poetry?

As with most things, the more you write, the better you tend to get. Similarly, the more poetry you read the better you get. I know both of those seem like pretty basic answers, so let's get difficult!

If you're looking for some more constructive ideas to work with, below is a list of old poetry challenge themes and secondary objectives. Thanks to all the old participants over the years who clearly wanted to flex their knowledge of poetry with some of these. Think of this as a list is a pseudo glossary of different types of poems. Doubly, clicking on one of the many secondary's will bring you to poetry resource site that you can explore on your own. Don't recognize a term? Give it a click and see if any inspiration hits you.

Past Themes and Secondarys
A View from Afar or from Within – Write a Clerihew poem
Society – Ballads
The Great Winter – Elegy
What Nature Reclaims – A Lay Poem
Resist! – Blues Poem
Pheonix – Enjambment (whereby a sentence is split across multiple lines)
Psychopomps – Assonance
All that is Good or Makes You Smile! – Couplets
Dying Earth – Blank Verse
Chained – Cinquain Poem
Something Lost, Something Found – Futurist Poetry
Sailing Against a Storm – Trimeric
Mosaic – Acrostic
Return – Septolet
The Ocean – Villanelle
Forgiveness – Pantoum
Non-Epiphany – Confessional

But what if I just want to read some poetry?

Well feel free to lurk and enjoy this thread. I'm sure there will be good stuff posted. But if you're impatient, below is a loose scattering of poetry books/longer poems I and others enjoy. These are a good starting off point if you're looking to jump into reading quality poems.

The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson
Crush by Richard Siken
The Wasteland by T. S. Elliot
Vice by AI
In Memorium by Alfred Tennyson
Poems by Louise Gluck

If you've got something you think should be added to the OP, whether it be a book recommendation or an obscure poetry term, let me know!

Hell fucking yeah!

Feels a bit shitty to jump into sharing stuff right away, so instead I'm going to talk about a poetry class I took in college. It was alright. The prof was up his own ass though, so for the assigned reading, he put his own published book of poems on the list. I wasn't going to buy it, so I borrowed a copy and photocopied a bunch of pages, figuring that would be enough. It was. What a monster twat.

For the poems themselves, I didn't really take the class seriously, so I'd mostly write vulgar/stupid shit but follow the rules so he couldn't dock me. Now and then I'd throw him a bone and put something LITERARY in there. I think the best I did was write a poem about jerking off in the shower in an effort to impregnate the alligators in the sewer. I ended it with some nonsense about evolution in the jungle and he was like, "This is a good poem!" And it's like, no it fucking isn't bro!

Basically, take creative writing courses in college if you have the spare credits/time. They're fun.

Nice OP. Always loved lurking in these. Never really contributed, but reading other people's work was always a nice way to unwind...

Got one I wrote a while back and just sort of stowed away. Just a little long is all...
The Lie

It starts out as nothing,

Just one single breath.

Embraced, self-forgiven,

A companion 'til death.

It grows unrelenting,

It's extent still unclear.

Expanding and filling,

As it reaches the ear.

Was it born out of madness?

Was it born out of hate?

Or is it merely the offspring

Of our uncertain fate?

It's summoned to hide us,

To save us some face.

Yet it always remains,

As our deepest disgrace.

We tell it to family,

We pass it to friends,

We unleash it on strangers,

And on those we depend.

So it grows and it grows,

Getting stronger with time.

'Til it consumes us completely,

Makes us slaves to our crime.

Without it we'll falter,

Without it they'll know.

So we feed it and feed it.

And help it to grow.

We give it our blessing,

And help make it strong,

Though deep down we know,

That it won't save us for long.

So we bring forth another,

One to bolster the first.

As we sink ever deeper,

Soon reduced to our worst.

And the second grows stronger,

Off desperation it feeds.

As we trade in our morals,

For whatever it needs.

It demands our attention,

Our affection, our care.

As we try to ignore how

It will claw and tear,

At our psyche, our conscience,

Our thoughts, and our dreams.

Keeping us up at night,

Making us want scream.

We want to admit it,

To just lay it all bare.

But now that we're this deep,

Would anyone even care?

Would they ever forgive us,

After all that we did,

To disguise our creation,

As the truth that we hid?

So we hold to our silence,

We keep to ourselves.

And we watch on in horror,

As ever deeper it delves.

Now another has joined it,

And two more form from there.

All so we can pretend,

That we're not in despair,

From the choice that we made,

Precipitating our fall.

From that one single breath,

That started it all...

As a cumpolsive liar, this one's still just as relavent as it was whenever the hell I wrote it...

You need to invent a time machine and go back like 10+ years and tell me this as I'm not going back to school :P

god I am old
soon I will be cold
body rotting in the ground
as the world keeps going around

Pleased to meet any new faces in this thread
A day didn't go by that I wished the poetry thread would return
I wanted a thread to post my horrible poetry
Nobody seems to care in other threads.

I know poetry is not for everyone
Since it's subjective and what not.

All I want is for some people to enjoy what we do in here
Like you know, smile at bad poems
Love some good ones.

Invent their own poems

Kick back and just enjoy reading some
Notice little details in people's creative expression
Objectively come up with reasons why something is good or bad
Whatever, just have some fun.

Thanks. It only took me 4 months. Also i dug the poem. Very dark, but I liked it. The short lines kept a really good pace throughout. Good job. you get a gold start for posting the first for realzie poem.

This. I took a single creative writing class in college and I regret not taking more.

I have the first post
in a thread that soon will die
Come on! prove me wrong.

I'm hoping by removing deadlines it will be impossible for this thread to die!

I don't have anything to post quite yet, but I'm hoping to fix that in the pretty near future.

(Still working on a way of publishing my poems that I'm happy with)

This thread has me super intrigued. I dabbled in poetry and creative writing in college, it was a lot of fun. I should go dig up some of my old stuff!

I am bad at poetry
By me

I am bad at poetry
I never practice, never try
I usually write works that are fiction
Diction is something I need to improve
Now that I'm in a class
I should put in effort, headaches, and-
Or maybe not
Is it worth my time?
Is all I'm capable of basic rhymes?
Like these past three lines?
Probably

Golden days straying from my mind
Summer haze that treated me so kind
Comes night and it's harder to find
Where long gone eyes keep me in the blind

I always try to make them rhyme.

I'm looking at some of my older poems to maybe share here, and I don't remember writing most of them. A lot are improvs, so just doodling with words for five minutes and calling it quits, but others I think I put some time into. It's hard to tell.

I guess here's a little skip-rope style rhyme I wrote back in 2015. Holy shit it was that long ago.

Little Marry

Little Marry—cutest fairy—
Yawn, it's time for bed.
Brush your teeth and say your prayers,
You perfect sleepy head.

Heed your mommy—on your tummy—
Place your hand she said.
Snuggle tight and say goodnight,
So off to dreams you're lead.

Silly verses—wicked curses—
All your fears have fled.
Move your hand and watch the brand,
And startle as it spreads.

Little Marry—rebel fairy—
Fill the night with dread.
Stomach gills and organs spill,
You, stupid girl, are dead.

so.... I want to legitimately recommend Dragon Quest 11 for the poetry.

it actually plays a surprisingly large role in the story. (though not everything is poetry in the game, just certain things, but man there are some great poems in the game)
This localization must have taken a ton of time for all the haiku and rhymes in it @_@

absurd

Spectacle, the modern day
Adults go inside to play

My lying eyes enraptured
And picked apart by buzzwords

All together one transfixed
Film starring Keanu Reeves

In a most confusing time
What a dream; it wasn't mine

Sleep is for the weak
So I say
I ignore my needs for rest
For slumber I detest
But nay, I can't resist for long
For the sandman's call is far too strong
So I shall turn off my lights and go to bed
And count the sheep inside my head

based on a true story

Right-wing gay boy
On the hook

In the closet,
His cocoon

Arguments and
Sideways looks

Trust-fund baby,
Silver spoon

Went to art school,
Read a book

Then I heard him
Change his tune

"Communism,
Ain't it grand?

Spread far and wide
Through the land..."

What I hope to
Understand

His choice between
Marx and Rand

Hate yourself or
Hate your wealth

Greener grass on
The commune.

I do declare that this thread will live, if only for just a bit longer.

modify

Problematic, erratic,
Grammatical radicals

Automatic, rhythmatic
Mechanical schematics

Magical, romantic,
Kinetic poetics

Influential, didactic,
Seminal polemics

Tactical, practical,
Political gymnastics

Redacted, protracted,
Abstracted aesthetics

Obsessive, possessive
Adjective addicts.

We said it wouldn't die
but now it's been three days
Life for this thread might be a lie
not matter what anyone says

There's still a chance for life
if only we posted more poetry
filled with our emotions caused by strife
as we fight off our misery

Roses for Magdalena

Lover,
Living in a foreign nation--
Countries,
Building walls to seperate us--

Soundwaves,
Carrying across the ocean--
Young choirs,
Howling out a yearning chorus--

"Roses,
Roses for Magdalena!
Roses,
Roses for Magdalena!"

Storm clouds,
Raging on the horizon--
Panic,
Setting in the hearts of sages--

Freedom,
Expressed by your choice of poison--
Children,
Tell your parents you don't want
To live in cages--

"Roses,
Roses for Magdalena!
Roses,
Roses for Magdalena!"

Curses,
A pox on all your houses!
Curses,
Upon xenophobes and enablers!

Lover,
You kill me with your kindness--
Lover,
If only they knew you,
If only they knew...
If only...

Here's an idea: write a poem using words and phrases suggested by your phone's autocomplete feature (if it has one). For example:

i

don't feel like doing anything
for the sake of
the play experience

need to sleep now
but there's potential
for smaller Japanese developers to succeed on the Switch

can get comfortable
with my Pokemon
and I'm deathly afraid of snakes

feel like you know
Trump is lying when he says
something we all agree with

A simple smile, that's all it takes, for you to brighten my day.
It's not denial, there are no fakes, I just listen to what you say.
we are two, and yet we're one, our fates intertwined.
I love you, my search has been done, since the day we first dined.
I don't know, what I would do, if you ever left my life.
so please don't go, my love is true, I'm so glad you're my wife.

idk, just wanted to write something since it's been 21 days since anyone did anything in here lol.

I wish I had more to post, but all my poems are super old and my song lyrics work a lot better with music behind them.

Nano is drawing near,
I've got to get in gear.

Let us see who is going to win,
And how many drafts go to the bin.

I wish you all the best of luck,
I'm probably just gonna scream: "Fuck!"

Here's what will become a song between now and six months from now

Haunted in your Head

I make you scream
I force your dreams
I'm everything you hate about you
Succumb to fright
This endless night
I'm forever right behind you

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you

I stalk the halls
I make you fall
I'm everything you hate about you
You cannot hide
You cannot fight
I'm forever right behind you

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you

I am the hangman's noose
I am the razor's bloom
I am the poison's use
I am the pistol's boom

I am the haunted in your head
Haunted in your head
I am the thing beneath your bed
Fill you full of dread
And when you wish that you were dead
Know
That I will never leave you

So I'm still working on that melodeath album! Recording is going alright and I even learned how to shriek scream kinda by accident. As it turns out, you open your mouth real wide like a hungry fish and GIVE IT THE BEANS!

This is the song that closes the album. It's based off the Robert Frost poem, "Fire and Ice" which is one of my favorites by him. To be honest, half the songs on this album are based off of poems or literature because I have nothing to actually say.

Firefrost

The lava will rise
The ashes will fall
The heavens will smile
And kill us all
And there will be laughter
This time of our end
Because ever after
Does not exist

Some say the world will
Some say the world will
Some say the world will

The glaciers will rise
The snow death will fall
The cold hells will cry
And kill us all
And there will be sorrow
This time of our end
Because our tomorrow
Will not exist

Some say the world will
Some say the world will
Some say the world will
End

There's a fire in the sky
It cracks and burns I don't mind
There's a riot in the air
I watch it all I don't care
There's a frostbite in my heart
I turn away yes let's restart
The word of Satan
The word of God
Let's end it all in firefrost

There's a fire in the sky
It cracks and burns I don't mind
There's a riot in the air
I watch it all I don't care
There's a frostbite in my heart
I turn away yes let's restart
The word of Satan
The word of God
Let's end it all in firefrost

What's fun about this tune is that it's a bit over six minutes long. It opens with a pretty long instrumental and real fast drums, which is cool, and then it hits the first verse. After the second verse hits (chorus is saved until the end because hell yeah why not), there's like a minute and a half piano interlude. Piano is fun. I wish I could play it, but computer programs are cool too. After the first chorus hits, it goes into another pretty long instrumental splintered up with piano bits before ending on the chorus again. It meanders in probably a bad way, but it reminds me of really fucking strange black metal, and I like really fucking strange black metal.

I'll be honest, as far as meaning goes, there really isn't one other than some general listlessness of wanting the world to end. Invoking biblical stuff makes me sound smart, but it's a clever ruse.

you know, I could just upload it to soundcloud.

https://soundcloud.com/chad-waller-513060169/firefrost/s-nfOiL

Mix is half mud yet, but it's getting there.

Sharing a rough poem I wrote last night cause it's winter, Christmas, end of the year and my depression is just having a blast this time of year.

Dread
You appear in my life
so suddenly. I'm alone
on my couch, doing nothing
and like that you're sitting
there on the windowsill. Storms
clap behind you, for you. There's rain
where snow should be. Yet I'm still cold.

Oh how I wish I could just forget your name.

What is the shortest a poem can be...and how does a poem differ from like song lyrics?
while less could be done
five seven five syllables
a poem is done.

(poem really just sounds like one syllable to me as I say it kind of like moan but it's credited as two. if you treat it as one just stick an "and" before a poem is done.)

and uh, I imagine it's possible to be even shorter, but Haiku are a type of poem and are one of the shortest ones I know of that a lot of people can recognize is a poem.

as for difference from song lyrics, a number of lyrics are actually poems. big differences would be oohs and ahhs, and repeating parts as while some poems can repeat, most don't repeat like song lyrics do.

It was a independent literary magazine from Cincinnati.

Pretty sure some dude drew a lowercase i and then dotted it with his thumbrint and called that a poem once. Poems don't need to be long.

I'd also say there's no real difference between a poem and song lyrics--song lyrics are poems. One could argue it's like a square/rectangle thing where all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles were squares, but when you get into more experimental music, poetic STUFF can fall away from the lyrics and they still work.

Writing poety is very enjoyable. It helps fill the spaces when you're doing menial tasks. Or just enjoying a quiet afternoon.

A fading memory
curled at the edges
oxidized and yellowed
familiar
smiling faces
losing their features
a somber reminder
that time
claims it all
joy and sadness
no difference to that
which is
indifferent

I'm also a fan of listening to music while thinking or composing. It can help evoke things that may not be readily available in absolute silence.
