Thought it was pretty good for the spectacle although I think the pacing might be too much of flurry to really appreciate the setting. It's very quick flashes of Pokemon crawling over everything and I kind of wished they lingered a bit on some of the pokemon interacting with the environment. Some really good gags like the Cubone at the beginning, Ditto at the end, and the Torterra set pieces although again you don't really see the Torterra until they're about to go underground again. Acting felt kind of hit or miss from everyone out of Reynolds comedic tone. I'm pretty stunned how many Pokemon they jammed into this.

Yeah, I got that feeling too. I want more and sequels, mostly because i didn't get to truly enjoy a lot of what was going on in terms of the Pokémon world.

Reynolds is the highlight of the movie and saves it most of the time, and the Pokémon do the rest.

You know, I think I will never trust a person who has figures of the Poké-creators at their office. I think I should have seen that coming.

I enjoyed it. Pokemon were super cute. Had some good laughs. Third act was a bit meh. Probably a 3/5 or 7/10 at best.

Mewtwo has never been described as a clone in the games. The anime was the first place that came from.
A Pokémon created by recombining Mew's genes. It's said to have the most savage heart among Pokémon.

Mewtwo is a Pokémon that was created by genetic manipulation. However, even though the scientific power of humans created this Pokémon's body, they failed to endow Mewtwo with a compassionate heart.

It was created by a scientist after years of horrific gene-splicing and DNA-engineering experiments.

A Pokémon created by recombining Mew's genes. It's said to have the most savage heart among Pokémon.

A POKéMON whose genetic code was repeatedly recombined for research. It turned vicious as a result.

Yes the word clone wasn't used, but it's there

Guess I'm in a minority cause I didn't like the visual style for the pokémon at all. Pikachu was okay-ish but it kinda had to be cause it had ta be the one they put the most time and budget into so naturally it'd look the least bad. But like, Lickitung was super hideous. And Mewtwo. And Psyduck. And so many others. The further from the camera a pokémon was, the less gross it looked. I'm glad I didn't spot a Chansey/Blissey/Happiny cause I wouldn't want them ruined for me!

Secondly aside from having played the Detective Pikachu game an seeing a screenshot or two of movie Pikachu I was otherwise totally blind, which worked out in my favor to some extent seeing as how so many peeps are mentioning that the trailers gave away to much!

Movie was okay enough to watch. In terms of quality it fits in among the lower tier of the animated movies. Not sold on more live action pokémon movies, it just felt unnecessary an added nothin'. Live action aside almost everything felt too fast paced. Consequence of it being less than 2 hours compared to the games 13~ hours huh? The one part that drug to me was the giant Torterra scene. That spectacle just kept goin' an goin'. An thats aside from it making no sense. Pokémon can be big hazards as it is, especially when exposed to "R", so why have the lab growing moving mountains right outside of it??

The pokémon were largely background props which sucked compared to the game. There they're living an working alongside people and each other an its explored super well. Heck even as part of the plot they misfire cause instead of Pikachu questioning Mr. Mime (or any other pkmn) it largely ends up being Tim doing so since the mime refused ta speak. ~_~ It really defeated a big purpose of Tim being able to speak with Pikachu. The villians big evil plan sucked to me cause I'll never like the idea of people becoming pokémon. Not for a gag, much less a big plot point plus its ultra unoriginal.

btw I shouldn't have been surprised by the stupid huge focus on Gen 1 'mon but that doesn't mean I wasn't still disappointed by it. Right up to the very ending to. Pikachu could've been flying high on the back of Rufflet or Braviary shown earlier in the movie but instead its Pidgeotto because of course it is. Again this is another thing the game did so much better. The diversity among pkmn gens so much better and there wasn't a strict focus on any single one of 'em.

I liked movie Tim better than game Tim both in appearance and characterization. Thats one thing it holds over the original. An while I didn't laugh or even giggle once I'd still put this above the likes of a few other pokémon movies like Destiny Deoxys and the Lucario movie cause they're dreadful slogs. Which is some very faint praise but hey its something!

My suggestion is if they wanna do another live action movie is to make it a Pokémon Ranger one. Those games/stories also follow the focus on interaction between pokémon and people an how they work together to solve problems in ways that don't involve battling.

I really enjoyed it. It's a little too fast paced though which makes it hard to take in the astonishing level of detail they've included, which really is commendable and a treat for any fan of the series. I also think they played it a bit safe and could have done more crazy Pokémon moments. For the sequel I really want more of what we got with Loudred, Mr. Mime, Ditto etc. Those bits were all great.

I loved how they worked it into the anime canon and the callback to the first movie. Let out a hearty chuckle that they managed to go all SSB and include a literal Poké Floats battle sequence lol

HOW DID TIM NOT RECOGNIZE HIS FATHER'S VOICE???
It's not that crazy. I spent 5 years away from my father, and even though I spoke to him on the phone every week his voice sounded strange and unfamiliar when we finally reunited. Voices are one of the first things humans tend to forget about other people, so it's not weird to think Tim would forget.

Just got back. Fun movie. A pretty flawed and predictable movie, but there are a lot of timelines where this thing ends up waaaaaaay worse.

The first half was a bit too slow and clunky for me. Tim's arc with his father drives the film, but it was so slow and plodding when it came to establishing his character/loneliness and getting him to the city. But then he'll meet people like the reporter character, who will vomit out her entire character archetype in like a minute, and then go away for awhile. The pacing is remarkably fast for certain plot points. The investigation stuff is pretty dull in general... They want to sell the film like it's a mystery detective film, but there isn't any substance to any of the scenes. They'll just kinda latch onto something at the very end of a scene and whisk us to somewhere else. I understand this is directed at kids, the first half seemed a little confused at what kind of story they were going for.

The second half was great, though. Felt like it settled into being a fun action-adventure movie with big dramatic moments and stuff. Intrigue at the lab, unraveling layers of the mystery, etc. Not sure if the Torterra setpiece worked, that was the one action moment in the second half that felt out-of-place and padded. The fact that they took the time to build up the bond between Tim and Detective Pikachu really helps... That heart-to-heart on the city curb basically gives the twist away, but it did make the emotional low point of the film hit harder than it should've. The emotional core of the film isn't amazing or anything, but I appreciate that it's there.

It was a bit disappointing that they would just have Ryan Reynolds repeating whatever was happening in certain scenes, just clarifying stuff for audience constantly. You can tell the producers were worried about losing the younger people in the audience, so I get it. I think I'm too used to Rocket Raccoon... Was expecting a slightly snappier version of Detective Pikachu. But he still basically carried the film, so don't have too many complaints with his execution.

Also, it was nice they did a self-contained story and didn't open it up for a sequel tease or something. If they want to do a sequel someday, fine. It was cool they just let this story be its own thing.

Oh an another thing the animated movies do a million times better: the injured pokémon trek for help thing. Tim was escorted by Bulbasaur and Morelull an that was it. When this thing happens in the animated movies Ash is escorted would be escorted by Bulbasaur, Morelull would join in to, and it wouldn't stop there. A whole bunch of other species living in that habitat/area would file in an march with 'em.

The "R" gas was really underused. Rather than being used as something to commit/coverup crimes its mostly an accidental danger in the movie. An yeah the detective aspect of DETECTIVE PIKACHU was really swept to the side. Whole lot of Pikachu yammering on about random stuff, very little detective work. He didn't even have his trademark magnifying glass!

Yeah i loved it, Pikachu was insanely cute and it nailed how my 10yo self would've imagined a real pokemon world...and oh boi that cgi, the mewtwo fight while short was pretty damn cool

I legit choked up at the end, from both the heartwarm vibe of the movie and also from bringing my little nephew along with my friends and hearing him almost scream in excitement all the pokemon names

Can't wait to do a second view with the original voices

Rhyme City took most of this movie's CGI budget. The herd of Bulbasaurs was more than enough. If nothing else it's a nice callback to when Ash encountered the herd.

I'm going to predict the sequel...
Tim's conscious will be put into Pikachu, so the sequel will be a buddy cop flick with Ryan Reynolds
Team Rocket will be introduced (no Jessie or James, but Giovanni will be involved)
Eevee will be a new partner, because TPC/Nintendo want it so
Eevee will be a stress companion pet for Psyduck

That ending left me more than a little upset. Why couldn't they just leave Reynolds in the damn Pikachu?!?!?!? Now if they do a sequel they are going to have to come up with some bullshit reason to have him merge again. :(

Other than that though I really loved it. Ryan Reynolds really did nail it, this movie would not have worked nearly as well without him.

Even if I hadnt liked the film, it would get a pass from me because it has heart put into it. The filmmakers did their research and it shows.

I really dug this. Everything was so damn enjoyable as a long time fan of the franchise. I especially loved how this movie exists within the Pokemon lore I grew up with. Mewtwo bring the og from kanto was wonderful.

Fun film. Really only know the games from Go and a bit of the original game.

It was really awkward when Ryan Reynolds showed up. He has this look on his face like "I wasn't really expecting to be in this movie, giving a sentimental speech to a kid......"

So the pikachu in the movie was the amnesic dad with the pikachu personality since the dad mentions the strange coffein addiction and mewtwo mention pikachu would retain his heart until everything gets fixed.

I also liked mewtwo voice is a male/female talking at the same time.

I was rooting for a Gardevoir cameo but I didnt saw her

Fun movie. Looking forward to the sequel and the rumoured mewtwo spin off and the rumoured live action version of red/blue starring Red.

Just watched the movie, once Pikachu appears I really started enjoying it, all the pokemon stuff was fantastic, its when it focuses on the humans that it stumbles because of the actors being just ok, granted the main protagonist does a couple good moments. As for the bad guy reveal, I was thinking it was the founder of the city the moment I saw him, afterall the movie literally opens by saying he has been researching about evolution, but because I kept reading comments online of how basic and predictable the story was I thought maybe they were gonna play it straight and make the son the bad guy lol.

Also surprised at the card packs, shame I got Magikarp orz

I think a few days later I'm ready to say I was kinda disappointed in this. But I want them to make another, better one, so I hate saying that out loud :(

I didn't mind the acting or the visuals at all. I like them. I hated the story. As soon as I saw the purple gas I kinda knew it wasn't going to be the fun who-dunnit-detective movie I was hoping for and was instead going into weird sci-fi shit.

Looking back, I also wonder why they blew the Mew-Two reveal right at the start of the movie (or in the trailers even). Seems like that woulda been a great, "Holy shit!" moment to wait and twist you with in the lab. That makes me think the whole thing was probably just bad writing/directing, and not even a real plot problem. I can live with the sci-fi plot. Just... do it well.

Very twisty indeed. I did not see the Ditto and Pikachu being Tim's dad at all. The garden of big ass Turtles was incredible too. Easily and without a shred of doubt the best videogame live action movie adaptation (we need an official acronym for that term) ever made.

Kid me would've died and proclaim this his favorite movie of all time had this come out around 2000.

Lucy's outfit during the second half of the movie was totally a reference to the female trainer's outfit from Pokémon Go, wasn't it?

And what the fuck was going on with the fake Home Alone black and white movie being played in this movie??? That was so incredibly random! And it's not like it was even a free licensing thing WB could've just used from their pantheon because Home Alone is Fox!

EDIT: just read the plot from the Detective Pikachu game and the movie adapta way more from the game than I could've ever imagined! And we still have people saying this is not a videogame movie adaptation?

What's up with the dude going on about Mewtwo being the strongest Pokemon alive in all sincerity when he has statues of Dialga, Palkia, and freaking Arceus behind him? I guess the idea is people don't know if those Pokemon actually exist?

I assume he's referring to what he believes is the strongest attainable pokemon
pokegods are on another level he probably doesnt fuck with space and time and creation shit

I really enjoyed the movie, but the weirdness of 'Bring the son to me and then i can heal the father's body' was... weird? Did Mewtwo need the genetic similarity between the father and son to do it?

that's the implication yes but they clearly didnt give a shit and just needed it to happen for plot reasons

Twas fun, but there were some pretty big issues too.

My main problem was for a movie called Detective Pikachu, there was very little in the way of mystery solving. There are twists and some genuinely good ones, but precious little foreshadowing or clues and no scene where you get to see all the pieces come together. In general, the protagonists don't really feel like they have agency in the plot beyond breaking into the lab and are just following it as it goes.

Also, showing Mewtwo and the car explosion at the start of the movie was a serious misfire. It completely removes the impact of many later scenes, like the one where the police chief plays the recording of the accident.

The only one stronger there than Mewtwo is Arceus and 2 stones can change that quite easily.

Yeah, but the movie was clearly taking liberties with Mewtwo's psychic powers. Dialga and Palkia would be busted in this universe, and Arceus is apparently considered as literally God in this universe it seems.

If we're going by the games though Mega Rayquaza is in Tim's room.

Mega Rayquaza is still not stronger than any of the 2 Mega forms of Mewtwo.

Mega Rayquaza is still not stronger than any of the 2 Mega forms of Mewtwo.
It has the same base stat total as them and it isn't hindered by needing a Mega Stone, making it automatically better. It outclassed everything in Ubers they made a new tier for it. And even in this movie it's not like he said the Mega Mewtwo was the strongest, just that Mewtwo was.

I also didn't like the climate change joke, not because I don't believe climate change isn't real because it certainly is, but rather it doesn't exist in the world of Pokemon.

Watched it yesterday - was a bit of a weird movie. Almost all of my screening burst out laughing when Ryan Reynolds appeared on screen, it's hard to take a movie with him in it seriously post-Deadpool.

Movie was alright, was a bit confusing they called the compound 'R' for no real reason when that particular letter has obvious connotations to Team Rocket. Also, they extracted the compound from Mewtwo only to then use it again on Mewtwo? And also everyone was successfully merged with their Pokémon except the bad guy who had to use a neural transmitter? When exactly was he going to transfer over....?

The R is from Rage

It's the name from the original Detective Pikachu video game.
