Maybe within the context that critical reception and hardcore fan reception haven't historically tracked all that well, you may understand my skepticism at the press's ability to be critical of this franchise.

Nah not really. The too much water issue wasn't a problem with the surf speed and auto repel.

It's more about the game design. Read the review and ignore the bulletpoints.
This can go one of two ways in my books. Either it is as bad as everyone is expecting it to be or the lack of damage control outside of stopping the leaks (at least as perceived by me) is because they are super confident and this will surprise everyone.
As a Pokemon fan, I would clearly prefer the latter, I expect the former, cause I am a pessimist.

No, she absolutely was. The number of water routes in the Hoenn games is still one of their biggest flaws.
Half of the routes in the game were still boring even with that though.
And it also applies to the types of the Hoenn Pokemon. Waaay too many water types.
That's true though if you're not counting 3rd version or sequel versions. Here's some recent ones:
Sun/Moon - 87
X/Y - 88
Black/White - 87
In oras it felt like a non issue to me and went by quick. Juat personally.
Bugs can be fixed, and content cannot. I'd say lack of content resulting in an empty game is a lot worse. Sure, a reviewer is a person and is entitled to his opinion but failing to mention any of the things that are known to be controversial about these games, as I said, makes the review itself questionable. Might as well give a high score to every game you have fun with if you just ignore all the issues altogether.
Agreed. ORAS had way more issues than water, tbh. They actually reduced the amount of surf you needed to do and diving too.
As a fan of DS you should know Kojipro threads are 200% the worst threads on this forum.
Guessing around 77. Not because of the dexit or anything, but from the strange visual glitches and wild area oddities and bad pop in that anyone would find strange.
I'm expecting a high 70. I think reviewers will finally start calling out these games on their issues instead of going "well it's pokemon alright, 8.5".
Reviewers won't go any more in depth than "it's pokemon. in HD. on Console. What more could pokemon fans want? 9/10"
What's controversial to a certain group of people isn't necessarily controversial to others. This still sounds like it's demanding reviewers see things the same way you do.
I voted 90-94 because every issue and complaint I have with the games reviewers are going to celebrate them as welcome changes.
FireRed is at 81, I think Platinum is at 83 if your not counting remakes.
Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee is 79, but I don't know if you count that as mainline.
