So to be clear, since I only saw the last few moments of the stream before it ended, when y'all are talking about Routes 1-5 being ultra-linear you're saying they're all just straight lines with zero divergent space whatsoever? That's pretty disappointing.

To sum up the stream:
  • Very linear handholdy gameplay with Sun/Moon like cutscenes every few steps
  • Exp. share always on makes your entire team overlevelled (The first gym literally got obliterated in 3 moves by a barely used pokemon)
  • Inconsistencies everywhere, battle backgrounds don't match the area you encounter Pokemon in, but sometimes they do proving they have the correct background but just won't use it
  • You can only catch higher level Pokemon when you get more gym badges (Lets hope you won't find a shiny you can't catch). This doesn't prevent you from being horribly overlevelled though.
  • Animations look stiff, especially for human characters.

That's so weird. I don't get the need for a void. Even Let's Go had backgrounds iirc.

Also jarring is all of the trainers in Nessa's gym having the same model. It makes more sense in the overworld where the NPCs are spread out at least, but as you're progressing through her gym it feels like you're fighting clones lmao. It's an abstraction from the 2D games that doesn't transition well.

The battle with your rival on the bridge where it teleports you to a grassy field and then back to the bridge after the battle.

Out of everything that's stuck out the most to me. It's just argggggggg.

Once again, I feel so fucking alienated by this franchise, its fans, and the developers itself. I've played Pokemon the same way for years (only using new Pokemon in every Gen, no Exp. Share, no grinding, etc.) but according to the fans who are defending this game and Game Freak themselves, I must have been playing wrong for years, so they may as well just throw away the way I play these games, right? Nice to feel like I'm expendable. #ThankYouGameFreak
Masuda has straight up said he doesn't listen to fan feedback before

I think they removed the backgrounds to focus on high quality animations and balancing the meta.

Might have been something other than backgrounds but I know I heard in dev interviews that they removed something to focus on those things.

I think they could have removed the post game to focus on making interesting Routes.

Don't forget the wild Pokemon are generally a higher level than the trainers on the route they're encountered on, making it even more difficult and impossible to be underleveled.

"The new title coming out in the second half of 2019 will be a completely different game [from Pokémon Let's Go]. It is not an entry game, but a game that we want longtime fans of the Pokémon series to look forward to."
The Pokémon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara - 2018

There are multiple ways this could be read, but let's run with the one that casts GF in the worst light, ignoring things like how it has more available moves, improved breeding mechanics (in fact, breeding at all), new types of challenges like raids, and various other features that aren't in LGPE, while also ignoring that difficulty is, to a degree, objective.

Some people wonder if the backgrounds aren't set by where you encounter someone but who you encounter.

So only Hop raises the flag for the bridge background.

God this game...I'm not huge on graphics but man.

It's a real shame just how toxic the whole Dexit thing has become. Valid criticism doesn't justify the level of outrage and hatred I've seen from some people.

The only hope is no one has experienced the multiplayer aspects which may be the saving grace.

(Though I'm disappointed at a weak scenario but maybe it picks up somewhere)

that stuff is all good, but it always seems like GameFreak takes on step forward and two steps back

I just want to tell you that you get a lot of unnecessary shit by people that clearly disagree with you on most aspects of the game and I like how you're still giving calm and sensible responses! If only everyone in Pokémon threads could act like this.

The only thing stopping me from canceling my pre-order right now is the fact that Best Buy is offering a free $10 giftcard for pre-orders.

I fucking love your series Gamefreak, why do you have to be just the absolute worst.

Hey, maybe some people that those statements were aimed at don't feel like this game was developed for them considering a lot of the design decisions that went into it.

Eh, personally the multiplayer stuff seldom interests me, so it's a bit of a nonstarter here. Thankfully, I'm not quite as turned-off by what I'm reading as many, though I strongly doubt this will be my favorite generation at this rate.

I believe that part about some Wild Pokemon being unable to be caught refers to the much higher level Pokémon that appear there that are meant to be a challenge/be EXP sources, not a common thing.

I'm just here to see the spin from Game Freak defenders. Are we allowed to say the game looks lame or is that too toxic

I actually don't think the people making the decisions get what is special about the series.

They probably thought "yeah, forcing the player to overlevel ALL their Pokémon will make them more useful and so they'll care more about them", but it works exactly in the opposite direction. The idea that a Pokémon I NEVER used can be overlevel, get its first fight against a gym leader and oneshot every single one of their Pokémon doesn't make me care. It feels trivial. Why bother caring about specific Pokémon if they'll be strong even if I never use them? How is that gym fight supposed to "feel good" and proof that your training paid off when you basically just used a monster you don't care about?

They don't get how to balance challenge and reward. If I'm just rewarded non-stop without challenges, then rewards become meaningless.

Moments in previous games like winning a battle with an underleved Pokémon are much more satisfying. You feel like the underdog, not the bully like you do when you're dynamaxing punching small Pokémon and killing them in one hit.

This is what sucks about this. Everyone acts like I fucking hate Pokemon or whatever despite the fact that it's been a huge part of my life for YEARS. It's how I made most of my friends, it's a big part of what got me and my girlfriend to get to know each other, etc. but for some reason because I criticize the game it's just not for me or whatever anymore, or I'm not a REAL fan. If I took a picture of my shelf right now there'd be multiple copies of almost every Pokemon game, plushies, figures, etc. But, y'know, god forbid I criticize the games.

After seeing the stream I don't think this game will do fine critically and among the general adult public, there's too much negativity already surroundering the game and from what I have seen it looks even worse than I imagined, and I am a complete pessimist with this franchise.

A couple of positives I thought I'd share mainly for a bit of balance but also just because I want to find some things about this game to look forward to lol

  • Nessa's Drednaw lived a +2 75 power+ super effective hit and then did 85% damage to Hitmonlee with a Normal type move.
  • Bede uses 4 Pokemon in his second fight
  • Early game Pokemon variety looks pretty fun
