After seeing the stream I don't think this game will do fine critically and among the general adult public, there's too much negativity already surroundering the game and from what I have seen it looks even worse than I imagined, and I am a complete pessimist with this franchise.

Initial impressions will be positive but I think people will sour on it within a month or two.

We'll see what that means going forward.

that stuff is all good, but it always seems like GameFreak takes on step forward and two steps back

The point is more that it's being treated as a statement they made dishonestly, is what I object too.

Hey, maybe some people that those statements were aimed at don't feel like this game was developed for them considering a lot of the design decisions that went into it.

Game Freak is not responsible for whether or not they have a different view of the fan base, or a different part of the fan base, than you do. Like, I'm sorry, but a lot of the people in this thread don't even represent a majority of the "hardcore" fan base at all. I'd say the same thing about myself and the people who agree with me.

Man at this point the Pokemon designs are really the only thing I like about the new games.

You know while most of the routes are rough, I really like the way the towns and cities look.

I actually don't think the people making the decisions get what is special about the series.

They probably thought "yeah, forcing the player to overlevel ALL their Pokémon will make them more useful and so they'll care more about them", but it works exactly in the opposite direction. The idea that a Pokémon I NEVER used can be overlevel, get its first fight against a gym leader and oneshot every single one of their Pokémon doesn't make me care. It feels trivial. Why bother caring about specific Pokémon if they'll be strong even if I never use them? How is that gym fight supposed to "feel good" and proof that your training paid off when you basically just used a monster you don't care about?

They don't get how to balance challenge and reward. If I'm just rewarded non-stop without challenges, then rewards become meaningless.

Moments in previous games like winning a battle with an underleved Pokémon are much more satisfying. You feel like the underdog, not the bully like you do when you're dynamaxing punching small Pokémon and killing them in one hit.
Junichi Masuda is on record saying that people (esp kids) these days won't spend time on challenging games because there are so many options and mobile games on out there to play.

this is 100% a leadership issue.

I used to be mad, now I'm just sad. I should maybe consider revisiting Platinum, not played that in a hell of a long time, or get to the post-game of B/W2.

What would be considered the "hardcore" fanbase then?

A couple of positives I thought I'd share mainly for a bit of balance but also just because I want to find some things about this game to look forward to lol

  • Nessa's Drednaw lived a +2 75 power+ super effective hit and then did 85% damage to Hitmonlee with a Normal type move.
  • Bede uses 4 Pokemon in his second fight
  • Early game Pokemon variety looks pretty fun

Good post. Early routes had tonnes of new Pokémon, music was banging in places (subjective), colours of the game really pop, it's still Pokémon with all its charm, etc.

Watching the stream reaffirms how much I miss following Pokemon, especially with the expanded field of view and the presence of Pokemon in their natural habitat in the overworld.

The cel-shaded Pokemon and character models and the UI all feel cohesive, and I hope they stick with cel-shading forever.

Thanks for some positive fresh air, you two. Glad to hear the colors pop -- that's a big draw to me visually.

They do somewhat, but then they said Nessa is at the lighthouse and she's just in front of a texture you can't walk into instead of at the top or something.
Could have made a pokemon bridge like gen 1 lighthouse climb.

I'm basically getting this game for $35 anyway, but I don't think I'll be able to hold onto it for a long time.

I loved Sun and Moon btw.

"Wow, the leak thread moved so fast overnight, I wonder what happened!?"

"Oh sweet Jesus"

Yeah if preordering didn't get me the game cheaper than it's likely to be for years then I'd definitely be cancelling now. I can't believe they seem to have doubled down on the worst aspects of the 3DS era. How the hell did none of these issues get even the slightest mention in previews!?

I am still scratching my head at there being 10 routes total and 5 of them are traversed two gyms in, however. I know I posted about this already but if someone can verify what I read earlier that would be handy. Or uh, refute it -- that would be stellar.

Meanwhile kids got nuts over Fortnite, a game that is skill based.

Most viral games explode with kids because they focus on creativity, experimenting and social play. Fortnite, Minecraft don't have much to read, you can share cool moments with your friends and every time you play, something different happens

It's like the opposite of modern Pokémon mainline games.

Funnily enough, Pokémon Go also nails this

Is..is this the interior of the gym? I didn't catch the stream but saw some screenshots.

Aw, Toxel is so cute. I can't wait to use it.

I think there's also several wild areas in between that don't factor into that calculation.

It seems I missed a lot. So a stream was going on of this game, and it's not looking too good? A lot of disheartened posters in this thread.

A lot more people than the sample size here, or even in the more vocal parts of the fandom. Those kinds of things represent only a portion of and are a bad representation of consumers, and not all consumers are casuals.
Okay, so where would the harm be in turning off the Exp. Share, yet again. I've yet to hear a defense that makes sense. That would not harm the "casual" fanbase, and would only add more options for players to customize their experiences.

Also, I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to call myself a hardcore fan, lol. As I posted on a previous thread, I own multiple Pokemon figures, plushies, nendoroids, multiple copies of every game, etc. All bought specifically from TPC themselves. I've poured tons of money into this franchise. That obviously doesn't make me MORE of a fan than someone, but it sure fucking hurts when they decide the way I want to play is something that doesn't need to exist anymore. And I sure as hell don't like hearing people defend it because "You obviously aren't the majority!" No shit I'm not, but the way it was before had no issues other than a lack of difficulty if you left it on, which I don't even get the opportunity to not do.

Definitely feeling more deflated than I was just a few days ago.

Same.

This was the first time really seeing the game in action and it was disappointing. Not sure what I was expecting, but there's just nothing exciting here. So much has been cut and so much has been obviously reused from previous games.

I'm not talking about the EXP share, or any of that other stuff right now . I'm saying this statement is being treated as if it were a lie and it's not.

I'm someone who considers themselves a hardcore fan who was upset about Pokemon Let's Go, and I do not feel like this game was aimed toward me. To me personally it is a lie.

Yeah, that's why I'm very uncertain whether it's actually correct - it just seems far too less.
I think there's also several wild areas in between that don't factor into that calculation.

Perhaps my understanding of the Wild Area is incorrect but I thought it is one large zone. If there are multiple segments to it between towns and cities then that's reassuring given the bizarre route issues.
