Magearna and Perfect Zygarde were clearly intended for Pokemon Z.
Magearna's whole design is very french, with the whole clockwork theme transformed into a Marie-Antoinette dress.
not just design, but its story parallels the superweapon: it's powered by other pokemon and fires a flower themed laser

I have a feeling it's going to be doomed to purgatory just like Eternal Flower Floette.
at least Eternal Floette was in the game code. was OG Color Magearna even in the game?

Floette will probably be a mystery gift for Gen 8. it'll be so far removed from Gen 6 and without a story (because they don't do that anymore), no one's gonna give a shit

I have no reason to believe they would distribute Floalette. I mean, what was the reason for they to not distribute it in gen 7? My guess is "lets make people forget about this pokemon so we can forget this was even a thing".

I get a feeling that the expectations will be higher for Gen 8. We are at same console that has BotW, Odyssey and Xenoblade 2, there's no 'oh, it's a weaker console' this time.
Btw, how Let's Go is selling these days?

Going with past patterns, the inital plan probably was :

2013 : X/Y
2014 : Omega Ruby / Alpha Saphire
2015 : Pokemon Z
2017 : Sun/Moon

The Switch was probably the reason why they scrapped Z. 2017 would have been too late for S/M.

I think Sun and Moon was always planned for the anniversary.

We haven't had a four year generation since the fourth, and nothing about the run-up to Sun and Moon suggests they cut anything down by a year.

yeah, OG Magearna's in the game too. I really like that color scheme too, bit annoyed that we probably won't be getting it.

it's still in the game's code, so they haven't actually abandoned it yet. if they wanted to forget it's a thing, it would have been removed instead of made vestigal

The thing is, they not only still have it in the game code, they gave it its own unique image and Pokédex entry into USUM which they didn't need to do

The whole Zygarde Anime arc when it was obviously meant to be for the next movie instead suggests that they nipped the bud early enough to not disrupt anything.

Again, this artwork is distinctly Gen 6, not Gen 7. They never had two different aesthetics for the art of the Pokemon, and its clear something else was planned.

I think Z was meant for 2016 not 2015. And 2017 was not too late for Gen 7, 2020 will be the first official season for the Switch, 3 years after the platform launched.

Perhaps Eternal Floette was planned for Pokemon Z, but as those plans changed, it's a concept they don't want to scap and are saving it for 6th gen remakes. ;)

I don't think they'll way until 2030 to release Eternal Floette. it'll either be a mystery gift or they'll write it as a post-game story for Gen 8

I could see them simply forgetting about Floette, but original color Magearna can work as a simple wi-fi distribution whenever they feel like it

I don't see why that particular order would happen. Eternal Floette actually has an appearance in the game while Magearna is tied to a movie

Agreed, but that's also why I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet. I mean, it was featured in the movie and everything

Eternal Floette absolutely feels more significant, but that's kind of why I can't help but feel they missed the boat on that one. Like, it would have made so much sense in the X and Y or early Sun and Moon days. Now though? I can't help but feel like they'd have to give it a whole new appearance for it to be relevant again.

OG Magearna on the other hand is just a cool alternate color scheme. Not a big deal, but that also means that it could always release without much fuzz, y'know?

I wan't new megas, they bring a lot of hype and variety in competitive, they make old (and useless) fan favourites be meta (and cooler).

Z moves were ok-ish but it didn't have the same impact.

I legitimately forgot Magearna was a Gen VII mythical and not Gen VI.

Anyway, I'm still holding out hope that Gen VIII will be Poke-Spain with post-game Kalos.

I'm noticing a lot of fans seem to think that the pokemon twitter is counting down towards a reveal by doing those daily tweets about starters.. . .

This reminds me of when people thought there was a countdown happening towards a reveal around pokemon day last year sjkfsjf. It's probably just meant to coincide with the starter plushes releasing soon.

Midgar, With Love
I have no idea why it's taken me so long to quote and reply to these posts, lol. Just one distraction after another over the weekend, I guess!

Ooooh I enjoy reading thoughts on BW2. Is this your first time with the game? I somewhat recently revisited White 2 and adored it all over again.

I agree with your general take on difficulty. It's nice being encouraged to do more than switch in a supereffective move and spam. I made pretty frequent use of debuffs, for example. As for Audino, it's certainly the most straightforward way to level in the wild, but I think most areas have at least a couple of "standard" high level mons that can be used if you're lacking exp. It just so happens that Audino is the "cheesiest" way, if you will. I guess whether or not I choose to go the Audino route depends on how eager I am to get to the next place. Though I think Unova as a region has so many little side areas and branches off of the main routes that simply exploring and finding items while battling wild Pokemon gets me where I need to be. One thing I'm not stoked about is that the difficulty choices aren't unlocked from the beginning. Like you said, BW2 are modestly more challenging than other games, but I wouldn't have minded being able to select hard mode from the start and make it even more challenging.

The side activities are pretty stellar here too, though far and away the best one for my money is PWT. It's flashy, fun, and fanservicey to the max. I would be stunned in the best possible way if they ever brought it back in a 3D game (as unlikely as that is due to needing to make 3D models for all those characters vs sprites). Battle Subway is really great too! The musicals were never my thing, but PokeStar Studios was very cool. Also the secret reward for clearing the version-exclusive facilities is really rad. Agreed on the gyms as well; between BW1 and 2 they're the best in the series for me, and that goes for their rendition of the gym building theme as well. Speaking of gym music, the leader battle theme is banging and it's amazing how it changes when they get down to their last party member. Bring that back to the series please.

I just yesterday started what is likely my 7th or 8th ever playthrough of Pokemon White because goodness I just cannot get enough of this generation. There are just still so many Gen 5 Pokemon with which I want to build a campaign team. Nostalgia for the feeling of first playing BW1 for the first time will always make them edge out BW2 from the sentimentality angle, but technically BW2 builds on the first game in almost every way. It's difficult for me to separate the two experiences, so I'll just say that both of them combined are my favorite Pokemon game(s) ever by quite a large margin.

Yep, this is indeed my first time with the game! I did play Black at least but that was all the way back in 2011. I'd considered giving it a replay first before diving into Black 2 but having just come off of Let's Go I was worried I'd be all Poke'd out for a while by the time I wrapped up a new Black playthrough. I've managed to remember a fair bit about that game along the way (and why it's my favorite of the ones I've previously played!) so I think I'm doing alright.

I agree with you on pretty much all counts! I love how many twists and turns and side paths Unova has throughout the journey. After I exited Castelia City the other day I was ahead on my way to Nimbasa but I spent over an hour exploring that sandy detour where Relic Castle still rests. I was aware that -- at least for right now -- I didn't actually need to go out that way. But I was also aware that there'd be new Pokemon, new trainers to battle, more items to find, all that jazz, so I engaged!

Looking forward to Pokemon World Tour. I've heard about it before and it sounds fun as heck. :D

And now you know why Gen 5 to gen 6 caused that much conversation in the fandom and still does. Just the side activites and gyms are enough to contest about a drop in quality, but then its also stuff like the little details in the world, the story, seasons which added another level of depth to the world, and so much more. Especially the overworld. There hasn't been anything on the level of finding the Castelia City Sewer detours with the Eevee Garden or the back Alleu bike gang, going back to the Relic Castle and finding an early game Larvesta, finding all the goodies and being creeped out by the Haunted House in Lentimas Town, finding the seaside cave, and also going back to early areas to find a nice chunk of new trainers and areas to discover again. Then the post game throws all the old areas you didn't explore already back at you to have some fun with, and there is a huge, entirely optional dungeon with Clay's Mines, one of the best dungeons in the entire series. Don't worry, not spoiling anything, just the names which are already on the map . You are gonna love it later on. Gen 5 just knocked it out of the park, and Gamefreak completely tossed it to the side only to pick up some of its nuaces again in Gen 7, but still muddled with Gen 6s baffling choices. Gen 8 needs to pick up the slack and take off from where Gen 5 left off, no doubt about it

Yeah, I definitely get it now. Heck, I remember feeling kinda disappointed by X two-ish years after playing through Black, even. I wasn't as keen on... a lot of things, really. I kinda enjoyed Pokemon X during the time I spent with it but I'm not sure I'd ever go back to it again.

You've really made me thirsty for all sorts of things to come. I've encountered the Eevee Garden and Relic Castle but that's pretty much it so far!

Yeah I think playing them back to back would indeed be a little exhausting considering how much there is to each of them. However I will say that the Memory Link (the feature allowing you to transfer information about your BW1 save file into a BW2 one) is absolutely brilliant and it's a shame we haven't seen another sequel-style third version to take advantage of it again. I consider it the definitive way to experience BW2, myself.

In any case, enjoy the rest of your time with it!

My ideal "reveal" would be the titles in March, and then the starters or a mascot type pokemon reveal in a post-credits scene of Detective Pikachu. That would be awesome.

No way the first reveal of the pokemon is with the realistic render of the movies. It would be pretty awkward.

A simple title reveal would be pretty pointless considering they already told us about these games not once but twice

It feels like we're still a bit early for this right?

Sun and Moon titles were not revealed until Feb 27th and the starters until May 10th.

So we could be at a minimum a month away from Gen 8 titles. That kinda sucks.

Depends really. XY had a full trailer in early January, and they were the first new gen on the system like gen 8

That's true, it did come out a month before Sun and Moon. I am banking on Pokémon being another Nov release though. Mostly based on the big titles we know of for 2019.
