Denki Groove member and actor Pierre Taki (real name Masanori Taki) was arrested in March for alleged illegal possession and use of cocaine. Since then, his roles in Judgment and Kingdom Hearts III, among other titles, have been recast. His image has even been removed from a manhole in Fujieda City in Shizuoka Prefecture, indicating the extent to which the actor and performer is being erased from the Japanese entertainment industry.

However, the police are perturbed by Taki's rapid change of attitude within three weeks. On April 25, fellow Denki Groove member Takkyu Ishino posted a photo of him and Taki smiling together on Twitter, captioning it: "My first time seeing Taki in a month-and-a-half. We smiled until we were sweaty!"

The tweet has since gathered around 75,000 retweets and 358,000 likes.

The police are irritated by the number of likes this post accumulating, claiming that it's an indication of the public's flippant attitude towards Taki's crimes.

"The Narcotics Control Department of Japan's Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry is concerned that by creating the impression that Taki can be accepted as if his crimes never happened, these actions will enable young people to engage in drug-related crime," a Narcotics Control Department insider told Tokyo-Sport.

Yup that slippery slope of seeing an actor who uses drugs to getting into cocaine

You'd think he'd been caught with child porn or something the way they're going on about it.

Legality and morality are two separate things. Legally, it's understandable to want to keep drug related crimes from happening.

Morally, it isn't right to effectively erase a man from existence over him doing a bit of coke, and the people know it. That, or Taki must have a new allure as a sort of rebellious badass after all this.

They'd care less if he were caught with child porn.

This whole thing is stupid. Completely wiping this guy from all media because of some drugs is backwards as hell.

Wow, so I guess, as it turns out, not even most Japanese people care about the absolute scandal of Alleged drug use. Not to say nose candy isn't bad, but having inconclusive evidence being enough to erase an actor from the entertainment industry seems like an enforced misstep.

Reactions like this only make it more clear, and I hope it helps to fuel more sentiment in japan that crime that isn't proven can't be condemned on it's own merits.

I mean, how many people in japan's entertainment industry were framed to get them out of the picture? Doesn't look very hard to me right now.

Edit:

I'm pretty sure it wasn't alleged drug use. They conducted a drug test after his arrest and he tested positive for it. He also admitted to using it too.

Thank you for clearing that up, I haven't kept up on the details of the situation, so I appreciate it.

I still believe this is a crazy reaction, for it to be expected that this looks so bad to Japan as a country, that they HAVE to erase any famous person doing drugs.

The way Taki has been treated is nothing short of disgusting. I hate this part of Japan.

When someone has many TB of childporn and admits to being attracted yet just pays a fine and can continue with his work, and another gets turned into satan because they snorted a line of coke, that's when you know something is wrong.

All cops are bastards. Societies (ideally) progress - time for Opium era 'drugs are the grandest crime known to man' stuff in Asia to end.

With the extreme reaction it got, I would have thought the actor is currently in jail or something, but he's not and free to visit celebrity friend etc?

Who the fuck cares? He's a celebrity, who cares if he does blow lol. Who cares if anyone does blow (except if it's a friend/family member with a legitimate problem). You don't like it don't do it.

Japanese society is disgustingly conservative sometimes. It's crazy that we can get the sorts of content out of that country that we do.

People there don't know it. It's East Asia and this is how we operate ever since the opium wars.

Heck, there's a young adult singer *smoking cigarette in public* in China just a couple days ago and they're having an uproar there. Because when your public image is based on supposedly not be like that, it will jeopardize your career.

Good

Japan's drug laws/cultural taboos are fucking absurd and the more apparent they are out of step with the public on this the better.

I'm anti-drug and pro-cops being annoyed. Is this a win-win or should I be conflicted o.o?

These kind of cultural differences are always super intriguing. Wonder if people in Asia were surprised by the way we reacted.

A cigarette is enough to tarnish his image? Very unfortunate.

He would have just been fined and a little slap on the wrist if that was the case believe it or not.

This is the ticked up dicotomy to think about.

They heavily and decisively erase people for drug abuse, because it makes the country look bad...

...and they do nothing about CP. I guess rampant CP doesn't make your country look bad if the age of consent is 13! Even if it looks younger then 13, that doesn't matter, people outside Japan complaining don't get it!

Except they do get drugs, so we can't have anyone famous do drugs, ever.

Do you see how crazy that is? You will literally walk down Akihabara and see a video store with a anime child in a thong sticking fingers where the sun don't shine. I know because I have literally seen it, and it was super awkward because I wanted to make a picture location album of the places I was going, and that made me think twice.

I'm hopeful the youth in japan, or at the very least some much more progressive candidates, can be a good force to shape japan's government in a positive direction, because there are too many things that need serious consideration and change, if Japan is ever to survive.

The thing is his image was that of the "young innocent boy that every mom would love to have as a son in law". Thats how the PR built him up. So then having him smoke a cigarette made people kinda see that it was just... yeah... his "image".

Thread is off to a bad start -- less talk here about the article and the incident than about unrelated generalizations of a whole country. Please stay on the topic of Pierre Taki and avoid inflammatory generalizations. Thanks.
