In theory, nothing much depending on which branches and school of thoughts you look at. However, it has historically been used by tyrants to establish a form of government where the means of production is solely owned by the state and held by oligarchs, forcing the working class to essentially be slaves.

Because these governments like the USSR and China call themselves socialist, the capitalist powers that be use them to fear monger people into submission and make them think that is what socialism solely is, and thus anything that's vaguely socialist or even just good for the poor and downtrodden is seen in a bad light (in the US, at least).
Let's say this socialist Utopia happens, it won't but let's say it does. Then someone like Trump gets elected.

How fucked would we be

Eh, the tides are changing and times too. Sure the old dem guard can try and limit the socialist influence, but the odds, and voting populace, is against them.

Even supposed moderate candidates support schemes such as medicare for all, some sort of single payer health care plan, and green new deal. Sure, not full on socialist policies, but the line is getting blurrier each day.

Is America allergic to socialism?

Yes

On a side note, if you associate the red here with the GOP, this fits today's political climate.

An authoritarian, ultranationalistic, white supremacist running a socialist state? Well, it depends on the form of government, if it even has one. In a representative socialist state? Well, if Trump's party controls the majority I could see it turn into a Nazi-lite state where socialism is only given to white people or a USSR style government where oligarchs control the means of production. Probably a bit of both. In a direct democracy socialist state? Anything can go, since people elected someone like Trump in the first place. In a stateless socialist state? Nothing, cause he literally has no power.

I'd love to see an American Labour party. It could be the roots of a truly internationalist labour movement. As frustrating as it is, western "internationalist" socialist movements are doomed without American support.

yeah but i don't think the democratic party could really transform itself into a labour party, it would have to be completely destroyed and remade from scratch (which i'm all for personally but seems unlikely)

Very true. Establishment Democrats better get with the program and embrace Bernie Sanders etc.

Yep, the lack of political representation of American labour is a huge issue both inside and outside America itself.

Guys, stop panicking lol.

Did you see what happened on the Fox News Bernie townhall? The hosts asked if they wanted Medicare for All, expecting the audience to have bought into the conservative propaganda, and they cheered for it.

There is a clear shift. Trump has a good economy by conventional metrics, but the areas in middle America, that Trump promised revitalization, are not growing still. They're are getting poorer and poorer. His tariff policy has been a disaster as well.

You guys gotta stop it with this. Be sober-minded and objective. The sky is not falling and these pieces don't tell the full story. Trump and the GOP are in trouble.

Trump has also punted any health talk after 2020. He knows he will be destroyed if he brings it up.

Socialism in America = taxing the wealthy at a higher % than the median household income earners to support public services in a Capitalist economic system.

In other words, it's not even close to Socialism. It's just how the conservo-Republicans try to scare the everyday people into keeping the wealthy rich and in power and not contributing to anything but their own bank accounts.

I find it humorous people are trying to bring up definitions of socialism as if any political label hasn't wildly drifted context. You think "Republicans" are all about the Republic?

The establishment Democrats don't view things much differently. They have zero interest in socialism. They want more robust social programs but changing the economic playfield is not an objective.

I was hoping that the establishment would save us with another winner like Al Gore, John Kerry, or Hilary Clinton.

Google "political compass" ffs. The ideas the most radical democrats share are basically center-left. Not even left winged!

Which is why calling themselves Socialists is just hamstringing themselves for no good fucking reason whatsoever.

Brilliant plays there. Nobody would care if they would just label themselves social democrats, which they are.

If a "socialist Utopia" as you call it happens then Communism would be the name of the game and there would be no state and no hierarchical power structures for someone like Trump to take a seat in, besides the fact that money would be abolished making it very difficult for someone like Trump to exist.

Yeah, Democrats are constantly attacking capitalism and saying we need to overthrow it. That certainly happens.

If who you elect as president defines your party then what does that make Republicans? Racists, right? Okay fascist, racists. Got it.

The Democrats are over then if the only people that attract attention are these types of people. They are simply not viable in a general election. Elect them in safe blue districts if you can though.

No. Social democrats will take over the party, and they will start winning again. Incase you have not noticed, the democratic party is in disarray because they are too far right, not the other way around.

Stop eating garbage and regurgitating those talking points.

Obama being a center right republican(his words not mine) didnt stop his party from collapsing. Its time we actually tried to be a real party for the people.

"Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires" = "American Dream".

But people are starting to see through the "American Dream" con and demanding more. I'm not sure if the US is ready by 2020 but the push back is starting to become impressive.

This coming from someone that isn't a fan of America.
I think more and more people here in the US are starting to realize George Carlin was right when he said "It's called the American Dream... because you have to be asleep to believe it."

Love too parrot dumb talking points that reinforce economic austerity, inequality and institutionalized racism.

Republicans appreciate people like you far more than they hate the socialists. Your fealty makes their whole project much easier.

As a fast-rising socialist superstar on this forum, I can definitely say that collective ownership is the necessary way forward
