The "defined 2018" are probably search terms that trended for that year as opposed to being consistently popular. Lesbian porn is always going to be big, but Fortnite is new for 2018.

Terms like Trans and Threesome only moved up about 12-14 slots in the rankings though but still made it onto the Searches That Defined 2018 list.
Terms like Korean and Anime moved up 15-22 slots in the rankings but did not make it onto the Searches That Defined 2018 list.
So I can't really determine what exactly the criteria is.
Because I'd generally expect it to be more popular with men, or at least equal in popularity?
I'm far more surprised that "solo male" ranks up there with women.
Not surprised at Bowsette, every site I go to has some Bowsette compilation or Pixiv gallery set somewhere on the first page. It just blew up overnight and didn't seem to run out of steam.
