Hi everyone! I've lived in Portland for most of my life and it has really become a city and place I've come to love. Great to see other portlandians (or portlanders). :)

Yeah the tourist-y stuff from the old OP is next to go up. Probably this evening.

For specific spots (like, say, Rock and Roll Chili Pit), use the following format:
Code:
[URL='LINK']NAME[/URL] TYPE [[URL='YELP_LINK']Yelp[/URL] | [URL='MAPS_LINK']Map[/URL]]
Legend:
  • LINK is the link to the spot's homepage
  • NAME is the name of the spot
  • TYPE is a genre description, like for the food spots it would be the food style; for a music club it'd be the style of music, etc.
  • YELP_LINK is self-explanatory. Make sure you grab the link for the actual site you're linking since Yelp creates separate pages for separate locations of the same restaurant.
  • MAPS_LINK is a link to Google Maps

Rock and Roll Chili Pit , Bugers/Booze/Milkshakes [Yelp | Map]

I guess this would be SW/Waterfront........

Hello everyone!
Enjoying the blustery days yes?

Absolutely. Wandered around yesterday in my area and it was a gorgeous day. Passed by the graveyard that was formerly the TidBit cart pod. That was a bummer. Already miss those places, though a few have moved down the road a bit to Division and 50th or so.

Hey, anyone have pest control recommendations? Just killed 8 yellowjackets or wasps in my house.

I don't, or rather I haven't needed any since being in my current house and don't recall what I used in my previous spot =(

Eight though? Wtf. Think you likely have a nest somewhere, yeah?

I can only assume. They are only appearing in the living room, so I kind of assume they are in the chimney. Just want to get someone out here to suss it out.

It's been amazing the last week and a half or so. Really taking advantage of it before the off and on rain mist starts coming in later this week.

Haven't had any wasp issues in years since I moved from my old place and when I did I just used Raid and destroyed the nest being made. Have you heard of wasp decoys? Those are supposed to ward them off and it's a lot more natural and eco friendly than what I used to do. If it's an already built nest though and it's somewhere hidden like in your chimney I'd def. call a professional. A bunch of wasps just flying around inside my place is total nightmare fuel. You can also try a diy vinegar/soda trap that work with most pests and just make the hole the size that the wasps can into fly.

We had a scare once regarding bees in the house. Came home from a summer weekend at the beach to find around 200 dead bees on the inside of our sliding glass door. We called Orkin and they got us in touch with a specialist for bee hives. You could try that.

Turns out we did not have a hive in the house. The bees had likely flown down the chimney searching for a water source and then died trying to exit through the glass. I'm just glad we weren't home for it!

Haha looks like Travel Oregon made a modern rendition of Oregon Trail:

Should be available to play through the end of the year.

My wife and I are new to the area. We just moved from Florida last winter. Right now we have an apartment immediately across the bridge in Vancouver, WA.

The weather here is amazing. I never knew what dry heat really was until this past Summer. It was 100 degrees out but it was so cozy I coulda napped in the grass.

Ya'll have fuckin seasons and it gets cold at night instead of staying in the 80's and the shade actually makes a difference.

There aren't fire ants, mosquitoes, and roaches every where.

And there are two goddamn volcanoes that you can just see right from the road.

Also, there are more Asian restaurants on the road I live on then there were in the town I came from.

I love this place.

Here's a few places I've compiled. Kinda crazy to see how many local brands have grown and opened up extra locations.

A few things to note:
I included Breakside's main brewery and tasting room in Milwaukie since it's a popular spot. Do ya think it's ok to include spots in the Portland 'burbs like this? There are a few places aside from Breakside that come to mind.

The Commons in SE will be closing up shop once they sell off their remaining allocations of beer. Not exactly sure when that will be, but it will open back up again early next year with San Diego's Modern Times Beer taking over the location. The Commons may or may not open up shop somewhere else and it may or may not continue to sell it's beer in stores.

Blue Star Donuts and Salt & Straw have expanded outside of Oregon, but they are still Portland staples.

PS: I guess there's a link limit for replies and the markups get all funky, so I have to split this in to two posts.

Southwest

Food
Tasty n Alder , American/Tapas/Brunch [Yelp | Map]
Blue Star Donuts , Donuts/Coffee [Yelp | Map]

Southeast

Drink

Northwest

Wiz Bang Bar by Salt & Straw , Ice Cream/Dessert [Yelp | Map]

Think we all got a new home here at ERA =)

So fun stuff, woke up to odd sounds on my porch the other night (Halloween night, the next morning around 1am) and found ... that someone had basically taken a blow torch to our door knob and removed it. Nice! Non-emergency officer that came out to take a look said he had never seen someone go that route before. A little unsettling for sure.

Yo, what? That is some creepy dedication. We have had some teenagers jump our fence into our tiny backyard before, but nothing was tampered with. My neighbor (now gone) saw them jump out, but failed to tell me for over two months, what the fuck?

I have been wanting to put some cameras up for a long while now, I really need to get on that.

Yikes, Doombear, that's pretty messed up.

I have most of the local site data in a Google Sheets, and I'm working on leveraging the Sheets API to auto-generate the OP because editing all of those links is a royal pain in the ass, I tell you what.

Yeah xxracerxx it definitely was beyond strange. The officer told me that a moving truck was stolen from a nearby business sometime that night too, not far from us. I can only think that maybe the two things are related. All in all pretty damn creepy and, like I said before, unsettling. To have your space fucked with like that, it lingers. The next few nights have definitely been a bit tense!

Oddly, just a few days prior, the police/park services came through our neighborhood and cleared all of the campers out. Some of which had been there for almost 6 months. I doubt any of us in the thread can say we haven't had had the luxury of having RVs for neighbors on our streets or know someone that does.

Hi Eugene. I am jealous because you are closer than I am to Bend and therefore Boneyard. =)

Thanks _swee_ It was certainly alarming. Yeah, campers are everywhere and I absolutely understand that it is a bureaucratic nightmare. I get it. Still sucks how long it can take for the city to take action, and it has been slow to see any real solutions pop up. It's a tough one, as I am not heartless and I can empathize with those that have lost a home and are making one however they can. Still, frustrating.

Worth sharing here, I think, that there is an attempt being made to track and appropriately deal with campers. The Portland Info and Referral number compiles complaints and is often a bit better a place to call than non-emergency. 503.823.4000 Those complaints and updates get tracked and so the city can (so I am told) more easily see when spots are getting a lot of mentions. Non Emergency can be funneled to many different departments so it is harder to compile data that way. Again, all just what I have been reading this last year as we've seen many more campers throughout the city!

Then there is also PDXreporter.org as another place to file reports for non-emergency issues. Who knows, maybe useful information for someone else here!

Oh man Doombear that's pretty crazy. Glad they didn't get inside your place. I'd probably be a bit on edge if that happened to my place.

Since they started clearing out the Springwater Corridor earlier this year there has definitely been an influx of campers throughout other parts of town. And once another area gets cleared out they just move elsewhere. Really have no idea how it's ultimately all gonna go down.

I was wondering if you made the move to Era JFoul glad to see you on this thread.

Welcome 19 & 21 ! Kinda bummed I won't be making it down for a Duck game this season. Love me some calzones from The Dough Co.

_swee_ how are the burgers at Rock and Roll Chilli? Been craving a good burger for awhile. For all the years I've lived here I haven't found one that truly hit the spot. Love Killer and Little Big, but sometimes I just want a good ol' fashioned decently cheap diner burger.

And while on the topic of food here's another for SE that I went to last night. I was wondering how you found patience to compile the list gblues def. took quite a bit of time to write up the listings I posted previously.

K-Town Korean BBQ , Korean AYCE BBQ [Yelp | Map]

It was really good and juicy. Only thing I would of liked is if they gave me more fries!
Their shakes are really good as well and if you go during happy hour, they are really cheap. M-F 2-6pm

Bummer, no endless fries like Killer Burger? I'll have to check it out though. Chili on days like today sounds good too. Always nice to find new spots.

So, the good news is I got all the entries added into my Google Sheets spreadsheet.

I even have a Python script that automatically transforms it into UBB code.

The problem now is that ResetEra limits posts to 30,000 characters, and the fully-populated list weighs in at 31,196 characters. :(

Gonna have to update my script so that it puts the yelp/maps links into a URL shortener.

I would cut the Yelp reviews and even the map locations. If we include the website to a business or even a yelp link for it, that would cut down a shit ton of characters.

I got the script to automatically put the links into google link shorteners.. and promptly got hit by the rate limiter in testing.

So, now I just have to wait for google's stats to even out, and I can run the whole batch through, and we'll see how that fares. Hopefully won't need to cut anything right away.

If I do, though, is there any preference between yelp and the map link? Shortened, they're the same length.

I feel like neither is that necessary and would allow more stuff to be added over time, but if I were to pick one I'd say keep Yelp since it has a map on its pages already. I do agree with xxracerxx though too about random Yelpers' opinions.

SE boy here. I lived in Salem for around 9 years before moving up to Portland in 2015.

Went to Tasty n Alder for the first time recently and was pretty blown away. Not easy to get a seat but if you can it's a treat.

The Toad in a Hole there is incredible. We always get it when we go for brunch. Great place, but hard to say if its worth the 2 hour wait.

This was linked in the thread about the Oregon/Washington road trip someone is going on. I hadn't realized a Portland thread was made again (I stay away from the Hangouts usually). Previously I had been in western suburbs (Beaverton, mostly) but about two months ago I moved to a studio that's right on the edge of Sullivan's Gulch and Hollywood. This is such a great change. It allows me to walk to work every day in thirty minutes and I have plenty all around me. I realized the other day that the last time I drove was on Thanksgiving so I took my car out just so the battery wouldn't die.

I'm just starting a 17 day vacation so I'm going to keep my eyes on things to do to keep myself amused. Looking forward to checking out Laika at the Portland Art Museum since I pay for the dual membership and haven't gone in since that exhibit came through. Maybe I'll be brave and bundle up to walk around and just explore more of my neighborhood since I don't go out much. MoviePass has made going to movies easy so I'm sure I'll swing out to the Hollywood Theater finally and probably the Lloyd 10 to catch a few that I've yet to see.

Random question since I know many of you are knowledgeable on food around Portland: Anywhere make a deep fried Monte Cristo? I swear anymore the only ones made are the pan friend french toast style but I've been wanting a deep fried one and haven't spotted one on a menu yet. I haven't looked super hard but I keep my eyes out on occasion with no luck.

All in SE.

Cloud City still has some of the best ice cream in the city. It's out of the way, but it's worth the trip. Though they've only got a few rotating flavors now, a lot of the regulars are good. The Sea salt cookie dough is one of my favorites.

Montavilla Brew Works is also a nice tiny brewery (emphasis on tiny). It's got odd hours, but has an outdoor section in the summer.

JaCivas is older, but still one of the better pastry shops in the city.
