You hear comedians talk about this exact issue, because it comes up a lot for them. They have a joke that they feel is punching up at people with racist/transphobic/misogynistic/ableist beliefs, but they try out the joke and realize people are actually laughing at the marginalized group, so the joke ends up punching down when they intend for it to punch up. So they stop performing the joke, or change it so it doesn't punch down anymore. Anthony Jeselnik's NY Times interview last month talked about exactly this.
I don't know when that particular photo came about, but he dressed up as Sailor Mercury by the end of his video about Sailor Moon video games, so it doesn't surprise me after all this crap that he'd pose like that in the costume.

Yeah, I think that's the main reason people are dunking on it. He wore that costume as a cute/funny way to end a video. Then, it turned out, he had used that costume off camera for sexual purposes, as part of the soliciting of fans. Queue dunking.

While I get what you are saying (I'm trans), when the image keeps getting posted in replies over and over and the comments don't make that distinction, it bothers me. Plus I don't think this thread needs thing to lighten the mood, their are plenty of other threads for that and I don't know, it feels like it undermines the seriousness and just how messed up and horrible what ProJared did as being.

I think with the Sailor Mercury picture that keeps getting shared, it was taken as a lewd, which is why people are giving him shit for it. It was something used in his chats with fans (including minors). I think that's a fair reason to give him shit for that specific image. There's easily a billion screenshots from the video he did on Sailor Moon games in that outfit, but no one is using those, just that one that was taken as a lewd.
